How to make a diy snes cart?

For some time now, Ive been thinking of making my own snes cart, with a game like earthbound, or another snes title I might never own.

But, whats the simplest method? Do I need an EPROM proggramer or is there some other way?

Im just wondering, if there are other ways of loading a ROM on to a snes.

Or is there a cheap flashcart solution?

  • If you don't care about physically owning the game the cheapest way is powerpak.

  • Get a powerpak. No making released titles, please.
  • To be fair, Earthbound wasn't released in the PAL territories (at least I believe), so it's a legit request.

As for what you want to do, the best option is a powerpak/flash cart. It'll be cheaper in the long run with less headaches.
  • Earthbound was an NTSC game only, never went PAL anywhere so he's fine if he wants to make one for those who get uptight about making copies. Still the powerpak would be helpful since it can run most things, but at the same time, you do have a light amount of added hoops to go through with saving, loading, and popping up the game in directories and possible upgrade files to add to the CF card.

If you're wanting to do this both to have that game patched to run PAL that's great, but if it's also a learning experience to maybe make more games you failed to get I'd actually stick to making carts as they'll be far more meaningful for you. I had a powerpak but recently ditched it because while nice having it, I never could decide much what to play as I had far too many choices and it cheapened the value and desire to play when you can do whatever. With a real game, especially if you make it, there's some pride there and you'll want to get your value out of it. I know Super Mario RPG never made it there, perhaps it would be doable despite its special chipset (SA1) it uses.
  • Earthbound is getting a Virtual Console release before the end of the year as well.
  • You're going to get your arse hurt asking questions like that lol. Reproductions of English releases easily purchasable titles are not accepted.

Plus there are like 10+ guides on how to do this.
  • Making a pal or Jp versions of a us only title is no different than reproing a jp or pal game for North America.
  • I might just get a powerpack. Seems like an alright option. I was really thinking of making a cart with a homebrew game, earthbound was (just) an example (of a game that I could think of). Making my own cart seems like to much of a challenge. But, I might give it a try. I dont have a eprom writter yet, but I've found a few for under £50.

    Thanks anyway.
  • A homebrew game isn't a earthbound lol (unless you just saying earthbound was an example of a "Game").

The powerpak if your best option for someone who doesn't quite have the skills yet.

You can always get two of the most commonly used boards and then with a beard board to make your own cart for testing purposes, but as your can see it's a wirey mess.

I think you mean bread board
  • Making a repro of Earthbound for someone in the PAL territories is no different than having a Terranigma made for A US buyer
  • Other than the fact that NTSC types get uptight about games going outbound, not ones converted from PAL to NTSC which I've never understood. I've seen this topic before and the questioner about wanting this got roasted bad for it which seems like a huge cherry picking pile of hypocrisy to me.
  • haha. There are plently of tutorials, and buyicnow.com would even make the rom for him if he's wanting EB for PAL SNES consoles. So for $25 bucks he can have a EB PAL version.

    buyicnow $12+$8 for shipping

    donor $3 bucks

    label $2 at Kinkos.
  • I'm going to try and get a "Super Everdrive", because its the cheapest option. btw, I am not thinking of creating copied games of official releases. I was just thinking about finishing some demos that I tried to program. I might leave the "DIY" option for the time being. Im not great at fine solddering. Thanks anyway.

So, just to see if I was actually wrong or not, I googled beard board. The first link came up to a "Teen's Beard Forum". Then I scrolled down to see this. Well played, sir. Well played.
