I don't understand the reasoning behind a "sega gamer" award. It's basically just a mishmash of random series? Why not just do ones for complete series like the NA ones? It would make more sense IMO.
Yeah, I'll expand it in a few days. Some definites so far:
Crazy Taxi - Dreamcast
Phantasy Star Online - Dreamcast
Shenmue - Dreamcast
Shining Force - Genesis
Streets of Rage 2 - Genesis
Vectorman - Genesis
And this is a list of games that defined the systems? Or the best games you could recommend someone to play now were they to get into Sega? I am definitely inclined to downvote Altered Beast even though it is hard to mention Sega without it coming to mind.
I see that Nazism is alive and well. Sieg Heil! and no Working Design Saturn games on the list unless they will be listed later? Oh well I'll just wave my Swastika flag and lament the fact that it was made in china .

We actually already have some Sega Game Series Awards. The reason there aren't many is because there aren't many series' that have a good amount of games. We are always open to suggestions so if you have any you would like to nominate let me know through PM. Also i understand this award is very broad but its dedicated for the hardcore of Sega enthusiasts.
Yeah as I was trying to come up with a list in my head, I realized that Sega was INCREDIBLY good at making an awesome one-off game. At best you get one sequel and then nothing ever again.

This is so true.
Nintendo made a bunch of characters and gave them many games over all platforms through all generations. Nintendo's 1st party characters have such high brand recognition. Sega made some awesome stuff but they were once offs. Nintendo’s identity revolves around it’s 1st party characters but Sega’s greatness can fall in to obscurity sometimes due to only making a game or two in the series.
Maybe rename the award to "Sega Fiend" or "Sega Maniac" or something less of a misnomer, since pretty much everyone on SegaAge is a "Sega Gamer."
Or maybe even, what you said yourself?

Yes that seems more fitting.
And for Pete's sake take "Mickey Mouse's Castle of Illusion" off the list.. for shame!
(c wut I did? Pete? Hurrr hurr!!11)
Mickey will only edge out things like Thunder Force, Road Rash, Gunstar Heroes, and Mutant League when hell freezes over.
We should pity the fools who pick up a Mickey cart ahead of the aforementioned titles/ sets.
I would also recommend replacing Rocket Knight with Earthworm McJizzle, if you wanna go to Port O' San™ land.
Or maybe take off Beyond Oasis for Earthworm, since I'm not sure about any of you guys but I was never even aware of that game's existence back in the day. It's a great game and all, but I never saw it in a rental store, and my friends with Genesisesisyses never had or talked about it, and I don't even remember reading about it.
It made collectors and retro people have a time-delayed boner, but I would proclaim that it did not realy play a part to "make" Sega.
An Altered Beast arcade cab at my local skating rink was pretty much the eventual cause of me owning a genesis, and everyone knew about/owned that game it seemed. Keep that one on there.
I think seperating them by specific game is not a good idea. For example, I noticed a few people mentioned specific Sonic games. Imo they are basically the same but in order to qualify for an award, I would have to have a certain Sonic title? There are very few franchises that actually scream Sega to me. Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd, Altered Beast, Earthworm Jim, Sonic, Wonderboy, Golden Axe, Splatterhouse, Ecco are among the choices. But to say something like Phantasy star III would mean that only that one game constitutes a "Sega gamer" but Phantasy Star IV does not? Seems weird. I do think that the console award is a better option.
But to say something like Phantasy star III would mean that only that one game constitutes a "Sega gamer" but Phantasy Star IV does not? Seems weird. I do think that the console award is a better option.
I agree - this is a tough one and will require clarification in the award. For example, in the current state of the award, Ecco, Shining Force, Sonic, and Splatterhouse are listed. Just Ecco 1? Shining Force 1, 2, and CD? Also, which Sonic (including Sonic CD, which is arguably the best version of Sonic 1)? Will Splatterhouse 2 and 3 both work to satisfy the requirement?
Actually If you notice my list doesn't have any two games from the same series. I made an exception with Beyond Oasis/Legend of Oasis because it played a huge part in my childhood. It was the first game I picked up on release day when I was like 4 or 5. I enjoyed the first one so much that I had my mom get me Legend on release day for the Saturn also.
So lets do it this way. Name your top 30 franchises instead of games. A member would only need one game from the top 25 franchises to get the award. Sound good?
No mention of master system? Im still saying alex the kid should be in the list because he was the sega mascot before sonic. I grew up on Alex the kidd in miracle world
I mentioned Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy. Im going to be honest and say that the Master system is the only Sega system I actually even own. My kids have my Genesis. I have yet to find another Saturn or Sega CD model 1 Im able to pull the trigger on cause the prices are pretty bad on those everywhere I see them. My 32x is just a piece of display and Dreamcast is just a piece of junk.

Yeah Alex Kidd and Altered Beast need to be in it for sure. Alex Kidd is on the box for the master system 2 and Altered beast was on the first Genesis box, you don't get more Sega than that..well unless you are Sonic
. So lets do it this way. Name your top 30 franchises instead of games. A member would only need one game from the top 25 franchises to get the award. Sound good?

Sonic
Gunstar Hero's
Micheal Jackson MoonWalker

Panzer Dragoon
Virtual Cop/Racing/Fighter
Night Trap
Phanasty Star
Shining Force

Are some of these even consider franchises: Kid chameleon, night trap, gun star heroes, comix zone?

I think the word franchise is being used very loosely in regards to the criteria of the award. I simply thought about what games I associate strongly with Sega.

We can definitely make some exceptions guys. If there are certain games that really "defined" a certain console feel free to list it. I don't want to rule anything out just because it only got a one shot. Franchise will be used very loosely while compiling the list.
Okay so after changing my list a few times this is what I have so far. I'm sure I'm missing a few so I'll add them later.
Master System
1. Alex Kidd (Master System)
Sega Genesis
2. Altered Beast
3. Beyond Oasis
4. Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
5. Comix Zone
6. Ecco
7. Golden Axe
8. Phantasy Star (Master System)
9. Ristar
10. Rocket Knight Adventures
11. Shining Force
12. Shinobi
13. Sonic
14. Splatterhouse
15. Streets of Rage
16. Strider
17. Toe Jam & Earl
18. Wonderboy (Master System)
19. Vectorman
Sega CD
20. Lunar
21. Snatcher
Saturn
22. Guardian Heroes
23. House of the Dead
24. Nights
25. Panzer Dragoon
26. Virtua Cop
Dreamcast
27. Crazy Taxi
28. Powerstone
29. Shenmue
30. Space Channel 5
I def like your list. I think a game from every console should be at least represented. I would also add Burning Rangers to the Saturn portion. I've never played it, but it seems to get a lot of praise. I would also probably take out space channel 5 and add the thunder force series.
I like the Franchise idea, but it still needs to have games exclusive to one system if we are going to call it the Sega award. Alex Kidd for MS is good, Genesis is easily represented but it would be nice to have a sports title Mutant League Football anyone?, 32X Star Wars Arcade, Sega CD Night Trap (has to be on the list it was a big deal), Saturn I think it has to be Nights, it was heavily promoted and continued on after Sega stopped making cosoles, Dreamcast you have to have a fighting game Powerstone, space channel 5 or Crazy Taxi
