It is unacceptable to allow the Thunder Force games and ESPECIALLY the Road Rash franchise off the list and keep Mickey Mouse on there instead.
That would be lunacy, MADNESS.
Those games screamed Sega like the sound of a falling artillery shell, and everyone that was potty-trained loved to play them and still loves them.
I guess that's all I have lest to say and I'll leave this thread to its own devices.
Mickey Mouse games will never be more Sega than superbikes, chains, lasers, fighter jets, certain death, giant flying battleships, assault w/ deadly weapon, and running from the police.
i totally agree with the thunderforce series. a must add.
and i've played and beaten kolibri. it essentially is ecco the dolphin, but the dolphin is replaced with a hummingbird. actually, i think kolibri was made by the same team that made ecco which would explain the similarities.
i do think a 32x game should be added, and probably the best two options would either be kolibri or knuckles.
here is my official list...for now. took ideas from other people, obviously. and i think that sonic CD and knuckles - with them being on different consoles - is enough to add them separately, versus lumping all of them together into the "Sonic series." i took out some games, such as comix zone, because it doesn't really feel like it defined the genesis like road rash did.

ok so this post is gonna be huge lol. Been trying to avoid other people's posts so i can come up with a crazy list
1. After Burner - Sega made their mark in the arcades so there's gonna be a lot of these
2. Alex Kidd - mario killer (but it didnt work)
3. Fantasy Zone - Opa Opa was a mascot type thing for a while and the games were pretty sweet until they dropped off the face of the earth
4. Out Run - Fantastic arcade game. Ports kinda sucked on console, but you can't have this list without it.
5. Phantasy Star - One of the only three RPGs ever made for Sega.
6. Shinobi - Arcades. This one is still around today
7. Sonic - Hit some rough patches recently and killed off Alex Kidd and a multitude of others along the way, but this bastard is the first thing people think of when they hear Sega
8. Space Harrier - Arcade classic
9. Wonder Boy - I'm not even sure why this series died. Probably sonic's fault
10. Altered Beast - Launch packin that showed Sega did what Nintendon't
11. Castle/World of Illusion - Pretty popular and the remake announcement got people's panties wet
12. CV: Bloodlines - CV was an 8bit Nintendo staple that turned into all of the competition gets awesome (arguably better) games lol Then next gen Sony got Sotn and N64 got CV64 for the ultimate troll.
13. Dynamite Heady - If we could just make it 'Treasure games' that would work also
14. Earthworm Jim - not exclusive, but the SNES version was gimped
15. Ecco - mega popular game about dolphins lol
16. Golden Axe - really popular arcade beatemup with a solid transition home
17. Gunstar/Guardian Heroes - If we could just make it 'Treasure games' that would work also. Not sure if these games are entirely related other than Treasure made both.
18. Landstalker - we'll make characters that look like link and not give a f-ck
19. Moonwalker - MICHAEL FUCKING JACKSON. SNES couldn't handle this
20. Mortal Kombat - At least the first one showed that Ninty was a kiddie box that couldn't handle blood
21. Mutant League Football - A Madden game that was console exclusive probably because ^
22. NBA Jam - everybody knows Sega had a ton of sports games
23. Powerball - I loved this game as a kid even though most people probably know nothing about it. Best fake sports game
24. Ranger X - Awesome shmup style game, but probably too obscure
25. Ristar - popular platformer
26. Road Rash - How can you not? Series made it's mark on Genesis before exploding onto every other platform
27. Rocket Knight Adventure - Exclusive and awesome
28. Shining series - 2nd out of the 3 RPGs on sega consoles that anybody knows about
29. Splatterhouse - I've never played, but people talk about them nonstop
30. Street Fighter - 6 button controller > all, but I'm mainly talking about the Saturn and Dreamcast games which I guarantee moved some consoles. 2D fighters SEGA had on lock
31. Streets of Rage - Seriously
32. The Adventures of Batman & Robin - aka Gunstar Batman. seriously go play it and tell me it's not
33. Thunderforce / Lightening Force - This list needs more shmups
34. Toe Jam & Earl - how can you not?
35. Vectorman - I remember renting this one and being blown away
36. Final Fight CD - the best version of final fight money could buy for years
37. Make My Video - everything that was wrong with the SCD can be summed up here
38. Lunar - The other RPG that maybe some people know about because it was on Playstation as well
39. Night Trap - Sega dgaf about controversy. BRING IT ON. Not here for gameplay.
40. Snatcher - Other people are putting this, but I think the fact that it's 'rare' now means nobody gave a shit about it back in the day so it's hard to say it made Sega
Anything on 32x that's decent is a port of something already on this list. "You're not a real sega fan unless you own an expensive & bad game that's exclusive to a failed console" makes no sense to me
41. Daytona USA - if you went into any arcade in the mid to late 90s (and even today I still see them around) you were going to find a wall dedicated to a bunch of machines belting out DAY-TONAAAAAAA
42. NiGHTS Into Dreams - Sonic team. people really like it. I haven't put enough time into it to see what all the fuss is about though
43. Panzer Dragoon - while 3D wasn't the Saturn's strong point, these games are still awesome
44. Saturn Bomberman - THE best version of Bomberman ever made if you have 9 friends to play it with you. Fuck N64 as a party console. 4 players is bitch mode
45. Chu Chu Rocket - again i say screw N64 for multiplayer
46. Crazy taxi - YA YA YA YA YA
47. Giga Wing - The only time when 1 trillion points isn't even a good score
48. Grandia II - oh yeah there might have been another rpg
49. Jet Grind Radio - When sega started to make some real wacky games that also happened to kick ass. Look at what nintendo was putting out at the same time. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon... No variety, but look what sold. fucking shame it is
50. Marvel vs Capcom - IT'S MAHVEL BAYBEE
51. Power Stone - better than smash bros but without the brand recognition
52. Samba De Amigo - queue up another wacky rhythm game. You can't get this shit anywhere else. except the Wii now I guess. You heard it here first: Sega was doing the Wii thing first.
53. Shenmue - The 3rd RPG Sega ever made
54. Soul Calibur - DC had some badass fighting games
55. Space Channel 5 - Konami was having some success with it's whole Bemani line of rhythm games so Sega wants to cash in on the craze and makes up another insane, very Japanese game to bring to America. And it's still cool.
56. Typing of the Dead - hilarious and original concept for a console
Ok all I have to do is get rid of 26 of these and I'm all set.
EASY CUTS
1. Dynamite Headdy - given only the choice of gunstar or this, headdy gotta go
2. Landstalker - I think it's fun and the dude in green is funny to me, but I don't know if it made anything
3. Powerball - Most people have no idea what this game is
4. Ranger X - I want this to make it through, but it's not well known at all
5. Adventures of Batman & Robin - there can only be one Gunstar
6. Make My Video - This wasn't a good game pick but rather what kind of defined the console it was released for. Bad FMV games abound.
7. Snatcher - I haven't played it, but a bunch of hype years after the console was irrelevant isn't enough to convince me it belongs. Too collector focused.
8. Grandia II - The first one came out on Saturn only in Japan and the 3rd one came out after the DC was dead
9. Space Channel 5 - Don't have room for two weirdo rhythm games so i flipped a coin and this one's gotta go
10. Typing of the Dead - I like it more than the light gun games this is a spinoff of, but it still doesn't cut the mustard in the grand pantheon of wonderful games I have to toss out.
11. Night Trap - a great big controversy can't save this game
MORE THAN 1/3 OF THE WAY THERE WOO. Still need 15 more though...
MORE DIFFICULT CUTS
12. CV: Bloodlines - this game is exclusive, but the series is anything but. I do think SNES got the short end of the early 90s CV stick and I'd love to Stick It To The Man on this one, but ya gotta go buddy.
13. Mortal Kombat - Got a ton of better fighters on this list still and after the first one, Nintendo stopped being such prudes. MK2 was released on 4 different Sega platforms though which is special.
14. Final Fight CD - Might have been the best version, but the series is not known for being Sega.
15. Fantasy Zone - Sega never cared about you anyway. If you live in the US, there's a very good chance you've never played this series.
16. Castle of Illusion - Seems weird to have Mickey Mouse hanging out with mutant league football and road rash doesn't it?
17. Splatterhouse - I've never personally played these so it's hard for me to recommend them. If they weren't so expensive and I had more focus I would get them, but nope. Plus it started on Turbografx didn't it?
I'M READY TO KILL MYSELF CUTS
18. Ristar - Choice between this and Vectorman for late release platformer. Vectorman wins because I have nostalgia for it and it got a sequel so it obviously did better.
19. Space Harrier - One of the Yu Suzuki arcade games must go and I choose the one with the fewest amount of releases.
20. Samba De Amigo - I wanted a weird late release game to win, but it was not to be
21. Moonwalker - Not even the king of pop is safe.
22. Giga Wing - I'll miss you friend.
23. Shenmue - you know what? fuck shenmue THERE I SAID IT
IT'S LIKE LOSING A CHILD
24. After Burner - another Yu Susuki bites the dust
25. Rocket Knight Adventures - Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Only the first game was sega exclusive anyway
26. Saturn Bomberman - I HATE YOU. only because it's like one of very few for sega consoles. BUT ITS SO GOOD DDD:

I just spent two hours sweating this list and I probably fucked it up. Feel free to kill me. I also just realized I don't qualify for my own award choice lmao. Only have Lunar for PS1.
nice post. i liked your thoroughness. however, i do disagree with several:
nba jam: game was on every console ever made.
street fighter: games were on every console ever made.
mutant league football: game just seems out of place on this list. i think shenmue would look nice in its place.
and no shemue: there are several games that MUST be on the list, such as sonic. another one that MUST be on the list is shenmue.
snatcher: game is far from rare. typing "rare" makes me cringe. but yeah, far from being rareZ!!11! and yes, it does seem that its overwhelming popularity came about years after its release. but i don't see how this is bad thing.
SF III was DC exclusive for 4 years until the SF Anthology for PS2. Alphas benefit from Saturn controller Hell, 4 out of the 5 Soul Calibur games were released post Dreamcast and it's not a sega brand, but if you wanted to play that first one, you bought a Dreamcast.
nba jam: SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Game Boy, Sega Game Gear. Add TE and you increase to 32x, Saturn, PS1 and Jaguar which still keeps it on more sega platforms than non-sega. Good enough for me. I guess once you go beyond that, it gets stupid, but I imagine for a Sega Gamer award only actual Sega games would count towards it anyway.
Actually, clarification please?
Mutant League: I get it, but I loved that game and Sega is known for sports titles. 1/3 of the Genesis library is sports so might as well put this kick ass game (and NBA Jam) on instead of Joe Montana's boring Football.
Shenmue: Sega is NOT known for RPGs and rpgs made up over 10% of the list at the end so something had to go. Wasn't gonna be PS or Shining so that left the cult following of Shenmue vs the cult following of Lunar. I also felt bad because it was the only SCD game left. Quotas. sorry shenmue
Here's another reason for snatcher: I've never played it so I can't recommend it for the award. ^_^
Mickey Mouse only "made" Sega as much as EVRY OTHER CONSOLE's Mickey games that were good made them. He stands alone for his own purposes, and to make cash.
NES, SNES, Genesis all had mickey and Disney games that were good, but setting them aside to have then stand over the more unique and "mature" titles seems silly.
Sega banked on cool kids and (as evidenced by buyatari's posted images of that "Sonic Bible") snobby narcissism. The self indulgence awarded by the Mutants and Rash series is more aligned-D+D alignment style- with the Sega Sages up in la-la land.
It was a good game technically. But very few people think of Mickey Mouse when they think of Genesis as a gut reaction. Crazy saw-bass, fast action, cold sweats, and squabbling over how fair the race was... completely absent from the sterile and tame land of Mickey, who was a filthy slut that slept around on all the consoles at the time.
I see where your loyalty lies when it comes to Sega importance dballin which is cool but not putting any Sega Saturn games in the top 20 is just ludicrous I get Sonic, Alex Kidd, Golden Axe, Afterburner, but no Dragon Force, Burning Rangers, Magic Knight Rayearth, Dungeons and Dragons Collection Japanese Sega Saturn Exclusive never released on PS1, and of course Panzer Dragoon leads me to believe that you have never played those games. Or just never owned them and has so much Genesis bias that I can't take you seriously as a sega Fan especially not adding Shenmue on the Dreamcast is mindboggling. Pre 2002 when the Xbox version of Shenmue 2 was released what other console platform and style of game was released on the PS, N64 that was similar to shenmue?
Correct me if I'm wrong they are Sega Saturn Exclusive titles worthy and are held in High Regard and deserve to be mentioned with the Genesis and Sega Master Mainstays. Just because you don't personally like them doesn't make Saturn games lackluster. IMO I don't you are a true Sega fan if you don't embrace all sega platforms and not only select few then what is the point of this Sega Award if most are Genesis titles might as well make separate Sega Awards for each platform rather than a general award because too many people here skew their top 25 on inclusive choices.
there is no top 20 lol? The bottom list is in alphabetical order and the top list is alphabetical by chronological console order. The numbers are just to see how many I had. If you check my collection tool, you will find that I don't own any of the games you listed so nope haven't played them. (Except for Panzer Dragoon series which I own all of them and it's even on the list so ???) It's not that I hate them and wish they were never made or anything. They're also, one-off(in this country), one-off, one-off, import. I was trying to avoid one-off games and there's no imports to speak of. Actually I just looked through the thread and the only thing you've done is cry about how nobody puts these Saturn games on their lists and yet you haven't made your own.
Genesis bias: Look at the list of games that came out on Sega consoles. There's about 1500 of them. Somewhere around HALF of those games were released on the Genesis which also happened to be Sega's best selling console and the one most people know about it. Yes I'm going to think that's more important.

Saying I'm not a Sega fan because I didn't include a disproportionate amount of late release, one-off Saturn games is a little harsh IMO. I think we're just looking at this two different ways. If the theme wasn't Games That Made Sega, but instead Awesome Games Nobody Played I think the saturn would do well there. It's a great console that I haven't fully explored yet because I never owned one, none of my friends ever owned one, and most of the good games are stupidly expensive and/or weren't released here.
I must've really fucked the list up since nobody else has had theirs torn into like mine. Considering I'm pretty sure nobody else has said NBA Jam and everybody else has said Shenmue we can probably figure out which one is gonna make it so you can lay off now.
There you go dballin and yes I played each and everyone on that list and have many more Sega games that I could nominate but here is the big reveal "IMO" is a diverse list of Sega games across several platforms that are deemed worthy in "my" eyes not withstanding any Sega Game Gear games included.
I think the definition of what you are looking for here needs tightening up a little. If someone referred to themself as a Sega gamer, I would instantly assume that all 3rd party titles are off the menu (which removes quite a few games from these lists). Many other developers/publishers made games for all the major consoles, so I have a hard time relating any EA games (for example - despite their contribution to the popularity of the Genesis) to the award.
I liked dballin's list until it went off the rails a bit. What I would be looking for here are the games/IP that dominated the arcades, worried Nintendo with unit sales and became quintessential SEGA; the games that made every other console owner wish they had a SMS/Genesis/Saturn/Dreamcast "just for that game". I read somewhere that we are looking for "the hardcore"; it's pretty bullish term that is looking to exclude people. Lets get away from the fanboyish and focus on what made Sega great, regardless of it's rarity/price/accessibility. I'm also trying to be aware that we shouldn't be naming games based on "That makes me think of the *insert console here* it should make you think SEGA.
Here is my list, it mostly reflects NintendoTwizer's

Crusader of Centy -maybe too collector biased - Genesis
Spiderman Web of Fire - 32x if only to make this award harder to get
This is exactly what I'm talking about. Let us not confuse "Collector" with "Gamer". Two very different beasts. Web Of Fire was considered average at the time and for "gamers" still is. Now, A *insert console here* Collector award, that's the one I'd be looking for
Each list seems to have some of the poster's own personality in it and it going to be tough to come up with one that everyone will agree on as Sega staple games. I am going to make one and try to be as impartial as possible (which may be tough but here goes ) :

Now before anyone criticizes my list, I left almost all my personal favorites off (Vermilion, Rayearth, Vay, Albert Odyssey, R-type, Miracle Warriors) ... I also left off all sports games as they really dont speak about a system per se but a genre. I considered adding a few other games as well. Fatal fury but that more speaks Neo Geo to me. Ive noticed the recommendations for Shenmue but only 2 games with that name with one of them also on the Xbox ... and it is a series that is too late in Sega's life to scream the name. This list is basically the names I could see in compilations for the systems. And I added MK cause when it comes to the games, they were always known as the "blood option" games and were a lot more popular making the system more popular.

Heh as I said, I was trying to remain as impartial as possible. My interpretation of the award is "What games would casual gamers think about if the name Sega was mentioned". The only one I was iffy about adding that I did was Valis.
So far this is what I have. Unfortunately we have a 3 way tie so I'm going to ask everyone help me on this one. Lunar, Hang-on and Comix Zone all have 6 votes. We need to break this tie so I was wondering how you all wanted to knock one off. I was thinking maybe everyone can vote for 2 of the 3 and maybe we bump whichever didn't get enough votes off.
And all those throw away votes I cast that made ppl rly ANGRY!!! are nowhere to be seen. HOWEVER, if I hadn't chosen Lunar over Shenmue, we wouldn't be having this problem right now.

Only have Lunar for PS1.
nba jam: game was on every console ever made.
street fighter: games were on every console ever made.
mutant league football: game just seems out of place on this list. i think shenmue would look nice in its place.
and no shemue: there are several games that MUST be on the list, such as sonic. another one that MUST be on the list is shenmue.
snatcher: game is far from rare. typing "rare" makes me cringe. but yeah, far from being rareZ!!11! and yes, it does seem that its overwhelming popularity came about years after its release. but i don't see how this is bad thing.
nba jam: SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Game Boy, Sega Game Gear.
We gotta keep the list STD-free!
*re-exiles self unless summoned with dark ritual*
Correct me if I'm wrong they are Sega Saturn Exclusive titles worthy and are held in High Regard and deserve to be mentioned with the Genesis and Sega Master Mainstays. Just because you don't personally like them doesn't make Saturn games lackluster. IMO I don't you are a true Sega fan if you don't embrace all sega platforms and not only select few then what is the point of this Sega Award if most are Genesis titles might as well make separate Sega Awards for each platform rather than a general award because too many people here skew their top 25 on inclusive choices.

And I forgot about dragon force for the Saturn. Never played it but it seems to get a lot of praise.
