Sealed NES Dilemma Its Opened!!!

Hey guys, Ok first off i wanna ask how much does a "never been opened or removed from box NES action Set go for" ??? Basically its sealed never been opened?

The reason i ask is i have one on its way to me, i managed to find a great deal of $50.00 shipped on one. Its supposebly Never been opened, and sat in storage for 17 years. I saw a pic of it and it looked awesome. Anyways its the original orange zapper action set.

Ok and heres the Dilemma. I WANT TO OPEN IT LOL.

But im wondering if this will be stupid and figured i would get some opinions. Im more of a gamer, than collector and just thought it would be freakin awesome to open up a NEW NES and have everything all mint and finally have a nes system that will work perfect. If i do, i will only play games that have been prfessionally cleaned in it. (like take them apart and clean them with that metal paste) for perfect pins, so i never dirty the system.

Pros>

NES Set never been opened or played

All new controllers, gun, system everything!

Should work perfect

Cons>

Be taking away the value of a rare item

Destroying the investment oppertunity lol (although i only paid 50 bucks to begin with) Plus i would prolly never sell it even if i did keep it sealed.

Anyways what ya guys think?

Also if i open it, i think im gonna open up my sealed Adventure island 2 as well. i found it about a year ago for $6.00 and it is my favorite game of all time. So would be a very awesome experience to open up my favorite game and favorite system on a crisp saturday morning lol.

  • well, you know where I stand image
  • I wouldn't open it, but that's me...you have to decide what will make you the happiest in the long run.  There are other ways to get something almost identical to an unplayed system.  Get an unused factory 72 pin connector (Not the aftermarket crap, the ones that came direct from Nintendo) and play away...the pin I replaced in my toploader still works great...zero force feedback is a dream as long as no dirt is introduced.  image

  • I always suggest opening them, but it's really your call. You can always open them down the road, but you can never replace that factory newness. If you do decide to open them, let me know the contents, and in the case of the console, I'd possibly need pics as well...so much stuff to describe image
  • I say Live a little and open her up!!! What good is it going to do you on a shelf if you say your more of a gamer than a collector..... I think I remember you saying how you sold your original NES back when you were younger... So in that case what would be better than to have a NES that is yours and always will be yours and no one elses... thats my opinion image
  • Check the box hinge first. I'm guessing if the box has been opened the hinge will show similar whitening to cartridge boxes. If it's not retouched and pristine, my advice is buy another one cheap CIB used and open-and-close that as many time as will make you happy to get it out of your system. You're doing a disservice to the hobby to change it's condition. If something's lasted this long in the described shape, you should preserve that anomaly, not intervene.

Yes, it's a game. Yes, it's only a box. But when there are other games and boxes you can own that you wouldn't be essentially devaluing/destroying by messing with them, why do it to the one that would actually matter!
  • I wouldn't open it either, especially if it appears untouched.
  • I'm in the "do not open" camp. These are pretty rare IMO. You're talking about a factory sealed 20+ year old system that HAS NOT BEEN OPENED. Not many people can say that they have that. I'd try to find you one that you could play with if it meant that you didn't open that.... LOL
  • Why open it? You can get an opened set easily if you want. Of course, YOU weren't the one that opened it, but who cares? A brand new NES Action Set is a sweet piece for a collection, too sweet to open IMO.
  • hmmmmm true very good points! Its just i have a top load and it works sweet but looks like crap because of the jail bars. Well i had another toaster that was in flawless condition, but didnt work good. So i put a Gold pin copnnector in it. and it worked good for a little bit, now its a piece of crap. And barely works at all. So i have 2 choices take a chance with the toaster and have a good picture but more likely to mess up, or play a top loader that picture looks like crap? So i figured having a BRAND NEW nes would solve all problems. But yea i would hate the fact of destroying such a rare piece. Although no one has still gave me a price of a Never been oepend action set. any ideas?? If its only like $200.00 i think ill open it, because i could resell a pristine one for at least $100.00 prolly. Plus if i did happen to open it it would be with extreme care, leaving no creases. So eh i dunno what im gonna do. I already have a few other nes sets in their boxes, in fact the action set i have is up for trade, so i might just keep this one sealed if its worth it. Ill keep ya posted of how she looks when it comes in.

Oh also what if it has a crease like its been removed but just never opened from the baggies?? any ideas on that price too?

Thanks again everyone for all the help :-)
  • I can see both sides of this case. I would be torn myself and would prob. not open it either.

  • yea i know man its tough :-(, still anyone have any figures of what a sealed orange gun action set has sold for???
  • dont open it you can always find a cheap one at a flea market to play
  • New sets usually bring around $400 from what I've seen. The Action Set might bring a little less because it's the most common boxed set, but if it's truly unopened, it would bring a pretty nice price I'd imagine.

  • ok thanks, yea i dont know if ill be opening it then lol. I might try to find a nos pin connector, that way i might be able to have a semi new one to play. thanks for the info!

  • DONT OPEN IT......

  • You only live once.  If you don't open it then you will constantly think about opening it until you either open it or sell/trade it.  I would trade it to someone who really wants it for some hard-to-get games that you can play (as you are mainly a gamer).

It would be really nice to have a brand new system though, not some grimey, poorly taken care of system with soda, peanut butter, and katsup stains (and that is just INSIDE of the control deck).  I hate to think what my zapper guns went through before I got them. I try to give everything a good cleaning before use, you just never know where it has been.

It really suprises me how poorly some of the items I purchase have been treated.  All of the games/systmes/controllers I got as a kid are still in excellent condition.

Good question though, let us know what you do.
  • lol yea its hard to tell what im gonna do i dunno. im still debating. ill have to see when it gets here. The thing is i cant really trade it for some hard to find games (unless someone will bring a cheetahmen 2 to the table), because i only need 4 games to have them all. the other 3 games i still need are still more valuable than the set (2 panesians and myriad) See i am more of a gamer but i also have the collector bug too lol. I just really enjoy actually playing the games though. And a brand new, never touched, sweet system would be amazing to have. But also if i could trade it for a ton of NES boxes i still need i might do that too. i dunno yet ;-(. O and i have had like 50 diferent NES systems, and none of them worked or looked BRAND NEW. I tried to clean and get new pin connectors etc. but they still dont look or work like new. So i dunno yet. :-(
  • Is a NEW system like that something someone would trade boxes or rare games for? I for some reason cant see that it is that big of a priority for a collector to have but maybe thats just me.... I dont think it will be that hard of a decission once you get it in your hands........ Youll feel either strongly to leave it be or to open it and all I gotta say is good luck to ya.....
  • lol thanks bro
  • Ok yep after lots of thinking and debating, heck with it, I THINK IM OPENING IT !!

    Heres my thoughts>>>

Ok yea yea yea i know its sealed, rare, worth $350.00 or something like that. But the thing is, it wont be worth nothing if i never sell it. Which i never plan to do. I hardly ever sell anything unless i have doubles of it lol. Kinda a curse i have had ever since i sold off half of my video games and toys when i was like 10 years old LOL. Im a pack rat lol.

So basically it would be sitting on my shelf sealed until the day i die and someone else gets left with it lol. So why not rip it open, bust out a brand new nintendo that has NEVER been played by anyone, (except me) and sorta start all over again like it was back when i was little and got my first nintendo when i was like 6 years old. Which i later sold at a yard sale when i was like 12 years old for $10.00 with all my games, and the original box i had it in :-(. ughhh sad day indeed, I think im gonna do it, To me Personally its worth more than $300.00 to have that experience. (plus i wouldnt ever make money from it anyways, (unless they become worth like 5 grand, which i highly doubt lol) Plus im only out 50 bucks for buying it, but not really cause i can sell my already cib one for same price. Heck with all the hunting i do, ill prolly find another sealed on if i realy wanted one and looked hard enough. So yep call me crazy but i think im going for it. Im pretty stoked! I will takes LOTS of pics too :-)
  • well in that case take a picture of the flap as your opening it... lol...
  • oh by the way, im sorry if anyone feels im disservicing the hobby, if i dont open it it would have just been a sealed set that sat in my closet for the next 20 years anyways lol. And never sold to anyone to begin with,. So think of it as this one was never found hehe :-)
  • I wouldn't worry about it man. Your stuff, do what you think is right. I just got a sealed King Neptune in the mail today and I am VERY torn on whether or not to open that baby up.....

    ~~NGD
  • yea why not man, check it out to see if its a black one! or better yet what if you open it up and its like a hot Pink lol, youd have the ONLY pink variation. lol man you never know what you might find. Maybe eveyone should just start opening up sealed stuff. This whole site can be known as those crazy nes collectors that open up crap LOL maybe we'll get bronty to budge and get full pictures of the contents of almost every game when it was first opened. Like think about it,,,,,,,,,,,i wonder WHAT all came with stadium events. Inserts, posters, Maybe some crazy insert that advertises Never before seen or released NES Games! Man that sounds cool lol,,,,,,,,,,,,but i guess we'll never know :-( ............................or will we.................wink wink lol ;-)

Its not a disservice at all - in fact its probably a service to be opening it and documenting the full contents. Enjoy the opening!

lol - when I was a kid, my dad bought a bag of sand in Rome for $250... after warning us about how tricky the vendors were. Freaking priceless!

  • I'm guessing it was "black market" dust from the masonry at the Colosseum or something? image
