NES Q Sound

I recently acquired a box with an old NES system in it, included in the box was this expansion thing called the Q Sound. I can't seem to find anything about it online, and I haven't tested it so I'm not exactly sure what it does. It comes with a big black box, a little bit bigger than the NES console itself, a NES Q Sound cartridge, and a huge thing that attaches to the controller and has speakers on it. There's also a sega genesis Q Sound cartridge, and a huge sega genesis controller with speakers.

Can anyone tell me anything about this?

Thanks

Sounds like Nintendo was going to use 3d sound in there games and this might be a proto type?

Does it say Archer Communications on it anywhere?
  • Oh lordy, I've been looking for this for years. PM sent.
  • Woah never seen or heard of this.

Is it something from back in the NES hay days? Or someting that was recently made in the last decade to retro port with NES?
  • Please add sold to the title when this baby is gone, haha!
  • edit: just caught the date on the LA time newspaper article from 1989, wow must be a proto type item.

Q Sound was (is?) a company that developed some kind of technology to make stereo speakers sound like they were surround sound. This stuff is obviously prototype hardware, I'm guessing these were built by Q Sound to demonstrate to Sega and Nintendo to get them interested in a partnership. Nintendo actually did announce some vague partnership, but I'm not aware of any Nintendo product that uses Q Sound (Capcom used it though, in Street Fighter II I think?).
  • Holy shit! Never seen or heard of it before that's gotta be rare.

The Sega CD version of Eternal Champions plays a Q Sound logo when the game boots. That's the only time I've ever heard the name.

  • This site is amazing, I learn so much almost daily! :-)
  • A few Sega CD games use Q Sound.

    Cool find!
  • Just when you think you've seen it all. Thanks for posting.
  • Wow. I love seeing stuff like this.

    Thanks for posting.

    Good luck purchasing it, Frank.
  • That's a serious first post. If you want to sell that beast you came to the right place.
  • Very bizarre.
  • Q-sound was used in lots of Capcom arcade games in the 90s, notably all of the Marvel, X-Men, Darkstalkers and Street Fighter games. Capcom also made dedicated Q-sound arcade cabinets to showcase the games in.
  • Gloryhole
  • Sell it to TheRedEye. Please. He'll make sure we find more about it. Having it end up in secluded hands would be a shitty fate.
  • That thing is fantastic. I'll throw in another endorsement for Frank (TheRedEye), he would be a great owner for this.
  • Excellent!
  • Sick find man, congrats!
  • Amazing find. It's a piece of gaming history.

  • Could we can some other shots of them? Also when a possible a video of it in action.
  • Yeah, DUMP THAT CART NOW. Back it up, as we don't want it to turn into a paperweight and be worthless. And awesome piece of history. How does it hook the NES? Expansion port or controller port or what?
  • Oh man, that'd be amazing if it hooks up to the expansion port.
  • That thing is pretty boss.  I can't say I've seen one of these before in the least.  That is by far the best first post that I have ever seen on this site.  I am curious:  How does it work?
  • If you're selling, I'd be an interested party in buying.
  • Auction! That thing is amazing no matter what it does. Possibly the only of its kind. I can see some big money in your future.
