SNES Component Mod Help

So. I have an S-ENC chip on my snes.

After taking pins 1,23,24 straight to RCA Phono Jacks I get picture!

Except the pictures "shakes" and is too bright.

I may need to add a 75ohm resistor to 'Y'. But what do I do to kill the shaking screen?

Thanks!

  • Are you using an HDTV? Some don't accept low res video from component input.
  • It may just be my opinion but wont component make the snes look like rubbish. I use my old crt tv fro anything from ps2 generation and down. I haven't seen an snes with component on a tv so I may just be totally wrong but when I put tales of phantasia on my hd tv I can tell a clear difference. the shapes are distorted and without scan lines it dosnt look complete. I have tried every screen setting to get it working but nothing makes it look better.
  • I'm using a 42" Samsung Plasma
  • Component Mod helps make it not look like "rubbish".

It makes a huge difference. Even with my image shaking, everything looks better.
  • Ill have to buy another snes to try it with.are their models of snes better for this than others. from what i have read their are diferent video decoders. some do component and some don't. am i right about that.
  • The original models do component natively. Just gotta take 3 wires of the encoder to RCA jacks. Plus a 75 ohm resistor on the green line.
    Snes jr I'm unsure if
  • If the screen shakes it's not compatible with your TV unfortunately. Mine had the same problem. LG 42" Plasma. You may also want to go over to NESDev and look up the thread there on this subject there is a lot more to it than just three wires to RCA out, you can potentially damage your TV.
  • I registered to Sega-16 to talk there about it with Ace but the forum won't let me post.
  • I did this mod and it looks awesome. I used the circuit here: http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=8979&start=60

It is about 3/4 of the way down the page.

The sega 16 forum one is this:

    http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=8&threadid=107213

I too could not post or look at the schematic.

I added potentiometers to my circuits to adjust red and blue.

I had the shaking screen and the picture was very dark until I built the amps in the schematic then all was well except for the damn bar down the middle of the screen.

Supposedly Drakon has fixed this problem, I will give it a shot soon. He talks about it here:

    http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?22239-Snes-s-video-rgb-quality-comparison&p=518491#post518491
  • Thanks.

I'm going to head to RadioShack right now to get these parts.

Hopefully it fixes the shakes just like it did for the person who designed it
  • Well, I built the circuit and no I get some sort of electrical noise and the screen still shakes. :s

I wonder if the noise is because my TV doesnt want to support 240p?

is this the one you used?

  • Yes it is.

Except I tapped the Y signal from the bottom of the MoBo on pin 7 instead of directly off the back of the connector shown in the picture.
  • Hrm, mine works perfectly on my 42" panasonic plasma tv. But it very well could be that the T.V. doesn't like the 240p. I would try it on a different T.V. to see if it makes a difference. I will try mine out on my Mom's LED t.v. tomorrow and see if makes a difference just for the hell of it.
  • I appreciate it.

If my wife wasn't asleep I'd try on my 32' LED TV. But alas, she slumbers.

The color saturation looks so nice and rich. It is actually kind of drool worthy. Better than any emulator IMO.

Ive found 2 YouTube videos of peopel having the exact same problem as me. But they dont ever say how/if they fixed it.

    EDIT

This may be unrelated... but isn't the original NES only 240p over Composite? Or is it 480i over composite?

Because my NES on composite runs A-OK.

    EDIT2

Tried the component mod on my 32" LED TV. It doesn't pick up a damn thing. But that TV was bought in late 2011. Where as my plasma was 2009 or so. I cant test anything further until Friday. But would love to read more feedback.
  • I tried it on my mom's 46" sharp aquos. It gave me no picture whatsoever. I guess I am lucky to have a T.V. that isn't so picky.
  • My mother has an OLD Olevia 26" HDTV I will try on. My grandparents also have an old 37" Vizio.
I will try those this weekend.

    NES uses 240 internally.

But many HDTVs do not accept 240p over component. Even if they will from composite.

Have you tried a CRT SDTV?
  • I do not have access to a CRT with YPbPr hookups. In fact I've never seen a CRT with those hookups before.
Even though I know they exist I still find it unbelievable.

Heh PAL users are more likely to think that. SCART makes it redundant for them.
  • I wish we had SCART. Because correct me if I'm wrong but don't their modern tvs still always have 1 RGB SCART hookup still?
  • Many CRT TVs have component. Check thrift stores like Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. Half of the ones I see have component inputs. Sony Wegas are a pretty nice choice.
  • There is always the SCART to YPbPr adaptors on Ebay, combine that with the RGB output cable from Nintendo and you get a nice clean picture. Also note that not all SNES/SFC have the same video chip your best option is to find a console with the 1Chip preferably the older style console not the mini but with the newer 1chip circuit, this has by far the best picture. Look for consoles with very high serial numbers.

Those adapters don't upscale. He'll still need a way to receive 240p over component.
  • Well I found a 36" Sony Trinitron WEGA at my local Salvation Army.

Has 1 component input. But it was manufactured in 2005.

I feel like I have to buy it. It's only $35 for Pete's sake!

You won't regret it. What's also nice is that it will probably also support s-video for other old consoles that can't do component.
  • It does

Which means I can use my new Atari 7800 ProSystem.
  • Specific Model is: kv-36fs120

I have a buddy coming over in a little while to help me unload it.

Can't wait to give her a whirl.
  • Oh shit. I'm reading the manual and it says 480i only over component...

Jesus H. Christ if this doesn't work ill be very upset....
  • You should be OK. Component SDTVs lack 480p.
