NES 101 A/V Mod Question

Hey all,

I'm going to mod my toploader to get RCA out pretty soon, but I had a question about the PPU. I notice that some people cut pin 21 on the PPU and send that to the input of the amp circuit, while others just solder it to the contact under and leave pin 21 connected. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to either method? Will each way give the same picture quality?

Thanks!

  • Just leave it in tact.
You can always cut it later. You can't uncut it.

I maybe wrong but I don't think you need an amp for composite. I could very well be wrong.

    Edit:
I am wrong. Composite needs amplification.
  • Depending on how you cut the leg, you can always add a jumper wire. It's not hard...
  • It can be reattached it even if the cut gets botched, you can file away at the chip to expose more metal. I'm just not sure if leaving the pin attached and simply soldering a wire on degrades the signal verses cutting the pin and soldering the wire to the chip.
  • So I gave both methods a try. Soldering it to the bottom of the board where pin 21 connects to gives a nice signal, but it still has jailbars. Detaching the pin from the board gets rid of the jailbars, but of course disables RF output. Pasky from NESDev helped out with this: http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=601&start=180
