3DO Testing Station Drive Repair

Hey guys,

I picked up a 3DO testing station probably 6 months back or so and I'm just now getting around to trying to fix it. I have like 8-10 developer's discs that go with it on official 3DO and EA discs, so I would really like to get this fixed up. Here is a description of the issues:

The system turns on fine and flashes the 3DO logo. When I open the disc drive the Logo comes up and then a graphic comes up showing that the disc drive is open. I close the drive and the 3DO logo flashes quickly for about one second and goes black. I can hear the drive warming up and trying to start, but nothing happens. The laser does not move and the disc does not spin. The laser is seated slightly behind where the disc sits.

edit: After opening up another 3DO and seeing how the laser moves, I took a second look at my non-working dev unit. The laser does not pulsate regardless of where it sits in the console. I moved it around a bit trying to see if a different location would kickstart the laser, but no luck.

I have removed the drive and reconnected the ribbons to no avail. Any thoughts? I didn't want to strip down the disc drive without any advice on what to look for.

  • I had this happen on a FZ-1 about 5 years ago. If memory serves, there was an arm attach to the disc tray somewhere that had slipped out of the place and thus the system didn't know if the drive was actually opened or closed. I think I re soldered the grounding wire from the power supply as well.

Again I did this about 5 years ago; my memory is a bit foggy on that one.

Thanks. I'll check this out tomorrow. Any recollection on how much of the drive you had to disassemble? There is a board attached to the bottom of the drive that I think I have to remove in order to get to the guts. Any more insight would be great! Thanks for the info about the arm.

Oh man, I don't. Most of the compents were attached to the case if I recall. I was thinking a bit more about it and it may have been a gear attached to an arm that came undone. I actually think I picked up another unit that has the same probelm (I have a few FZ-1s) if so, I tear into it tonight and post a video on youtube for you. I'll keep you posted.

Hey, confirmed I have another unit which is having the same problem. I started digging into it but didn't get as far as I had hoped. I'll work on it this weekend. Sorry!

No problem. Just as an update, I went back in, took apart the CD drive, and adjusted the pot screw on the laser. The laser moves now, but it just doesn't read the disc. Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated.
  • I'm sitting on a similar issue with my Sega X'eye. I've replaced everything but the ENTIRE cd drive assembly, and nothing makes it boot lol.

    Good luck

I spent hours adjusting the lazer pot and putting the drive back together with no luck. The lazer moves, but the drive just won't spin. So frustrating.

  • my issue(s) was the motor itself.
