NES & Genesis QSound Prototype Photos & Update

Hey everyone,

Just reavealing myself as the buyer of the QSound prototype hardware and wanted to share some new pictures of the hardware and setup.

The bad news: It's currently only partially functional, so no video. The 'amp/decoder' unit turns on but the carts do not seem to be piping out audio from their respective audio jacks. The EPROMs were uncovered and I don't have my reader up here in Canada. I'll attempt to see what, if anything, is on them in the near future.

The good news: Everything does seem to be intact and complete. Controllers themselves are functional as are the speakers. Amp/decoder does function when fed other audio so going to look for some QSound sources.

It's going to take a while but I'll keep working on getting it up and running when I have the time & equipment. May try to bring this to the Portland Retro Gaming Expo or PAX, but barring that it will definitely be at Classic Gaming Expo whenever the next one is held. Hopefully by then we have it all up and running.

Enjoy the pics!

  • NICE !

When are the bunnyboy reproductions rolling out
  • Sweet!! Thanks for sharing
  • LOL my thoughts exactly!
  • Beautiful piece man. Congrats
  • Bring to Portland, I can bring CopyNES to dump it.

Edit: The A1010A chip is an FPGA, but it is one time programmable fuse based so it shouldn't be erasable.

You aren't getting off that easy.

We expect exact reproductions of the entire thing !

lol would there really be a big demand for the speaker peripherals? Might be costly to make.

I'm not saying DON'T make them (Heck, now I want one! lol) but mainly just dump the roms to help preserve them. I'm good with just pics and/or a vid of the whole set up running.

  • Naw I wouldn't make repros of any part, just want to figure out what it does! Unfortunately if both carts don't work that makes it more likely the decoder box has something wrong. Maybe I should bring logic analyzer too...
  • I hope it's an easy fix and not an erased chip on the carts. If you guys can get it runnin' that'll be sweet!

Can you imagine a limited edition working setup with cartridge and speakers in a nice box set? Even if the setup was $200+ it would sell out quick. With some time the price on the secondary market for an original set could beat out the garage cart.

  • Incredibly interesting stuff. Congratulations on getting this setup, and thank you for sharing. Very glad this won't be locked away.
  • Congrats! How I love me some prototypes!
  • Congrats on the purchase Steve, and thanks for sharing the pics!

What's your website going to feature?

Thanks! Ah, the URL was for a site I had planned but scrapped a while back. Will post finds on Twitter, Tumblr, etc. instead.

  • A thing of beauty. Hope to see it working some day.
  • Congrats on your purchase sir. I'm glad this found it way to a good pair of hands.
  • Congrats and thanks for sharing!
  • nice steve! looks choice. can't wait to see it in Portland.
  • I'm going to sound really depressing here, but maybe the reason it never made it to market was because it never worked?
  • Curious to hear if there's been any updates on this!
  • i think they were having some issues with it at PRGE... if i recall. and i can't recall much these days.
  • I met with Steve Lin at PRGE and got the NES and Genesis carts dumped. Figured out there is only a very small amount of code to control the external audio, so no video/audio from the console is to be expected. Will need all the hardware and my tools in the same place to figure out more. No idea when that will happen!
  • Forgive me if i sound ignorant, what does this thing do?
  • Any more news on this?
