Categorize Game Development

I am recreating my portfolio/blog, and I am having difficulty naming the categories for the different types of game development I have done over the years.

For instance, many of my projects were made using the Unity game engine which involves high-level scripting and many canned tools provided by the engine.

However, I have also done projects and tools for the NES which were from stratch using assembly language or C/C++.

How would you split these two types of projects into categories?

Idea #1

High-Level Game Design

Low-Level Game Design

Idea #2

Vintage Game Design

Modern Game Design

Thanks,

Jarrod

  • That's kind of a fun question. I like the words Modern vs. Vintage. Maybe say retro or something. I'd probably say retro, myself.
  • Retro is definitely an awesome buzz word. I fear there could be some overlap with the "retro style" which, for some, is anything that has a pixel graphic style or is "like" a game they remember on an old console.
  • Maybe be like "Retro game development. No really. retro. You know. Actual old 8 bit consoles. That plug into a CRT tv. With controllers and stuff. Yeah."

Nice! If only I could fit that lengthy title with my other short SEO-considered ones

  • Classical Game Development.

I like it. I think if I were making a portfolio I'd call them:

"Sell out game development where I make games that will be on systems that become obsolete in 5 years...or less"

"Development of games I actually care about, for good video game systems that will never die, who will be emulated forever, that will still work and that I can still be proud of when I am 90 and falling apart"

    A bit of tongue-in-cheek there.

    Sounds like "Hardcore Development"
