Custom NES Controller - WIP

Hello fellow nintendoAGE addicts...  Not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this, but thought I would share a custom project I've been working on with the community here.  After seeing all the great projects the Custom NES Guy has done, I decided to purchase equiment, and try my hand at it.  Granted, I'm a total newb at this, and will likely muck up my first few tries...  However, I dig the challenge.

I purchased a new air compressor, and picked up a couple different air brushes.  One is for automotive, the other is a standard Air Brush.  In seeing the amazing results the Custom NES Guy is getting, I decided I wanted to use as close to the same equipment I could.  I'm pretty sure he was using automotive equiment to paint his stuff.  I needed a new aircompressor, so why not get the paint tools too.

First, I should say that I'm only reconditioning older consoles and controllers, that are fugly to begin with.  I'm not into the idea of moding perfectly good looking consoles and controllers for the sake of it.  That said, for this beat-up controller, I used a DA Sander, and sanded down the rough edges before I put my first coat of primer down.  I probably sanded 3-4 times between coats of primer before laying down my first base coat of color.  I'll leave shots below for your review.  I'm not done yet.  I still need to shoot it with 2-3 more coats of color between sanding, and then hit it with clear, then sand again... AHH!  Prep work is crazy, but I'm sure it will be worth it.

All primed up:

First Coat Down (sorry for the blurry picture):

Just for fun:

I see all these really cool custom decals people are making.  Is there a place I can score instructions on how this is done, or perhaps a link to where they can be purchased?  I'm on the fence if I will put a custom graphic in place of the original black and grey one.  Thoughts?

  • Looks good man!

Much better than the people who think Krylon is their best friend.
  • Nice,I really like that blue. Your Going to post pictures of it put back together right?

You should check out my stuff too, http://weston-uchiha.deviantart.com/
  • Thanks for the feedback all!

I will definitely post pictures of the finished product. I plan to do something similar to an NES system I have. Maybe I'll make it match.

@Weston Uchiha.... Dude, your customs are sick man! Well done. I especially love the white N64. Where did you score the sweet decals for your customs, or are those custom as well?
  • Just an idea.. If you exact-o knife out a stencil the of face sticker, you could apply it permanently instead of re-applying the old "Sticker" with the button labels. Might be best to print or trace on a sheet of paper and do it that way. But it would stay forever, and no sticker to fall back off. I don't know that I would care too much about the button labels themselves.. So the pattern may really be the most important bit vs. dumb lettering.. :-P

Ohh, the most important bit is then you could use different colors as well.
  • Custom decals would be easy to make. Just take your current decal and scan it to use as a template. Any photo editing software will allow you to put whatever picture you want on it. Then print it out on some adhesive printable vinyl like the Cricut uses and stick it on.
