Good EPROM programmer and label printing

I'm looking to start some dev work and figure NES is a good place to start, so I'm looking for a good EPROM programmer that works well with NES. I'm hoping to get a reliable one without breaking the bank, and I'm running 64-bit Windows 8 if that matters. If you've got any tips for a noob programmer I'd appreciate it.

Also, what is the best way to print game labels? Can I do it on my own printer or do I need it specially printed? And how do you cut them out without messing up? Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • If you're looking into NES development and are worried about EPROM programmers and Labels, you're starting the completely wrong place. Write a few demos and a game and then work on that stuff....emus are 100% sufficient until you actually know what you're doing. Worry about the extra stuff when the extra stuff needs done.
  • When I hear label printer my skin crawls... I agree 100% though with 3gen.
  • Agreed with 3Gen and JaxsBox.

Starting simple (build demos, using emulator, etc) and building up is your best bet. Otherwise many people are easily discouraged.

On another note, if you do want to test your demos and homebrew on a real NES checkout the PowerPak at http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?products_id=34. It is awesome.
  • Thanks for the advice, guys, and I'm definitely going to start smaller than reprogramming just now--but because I'm the person I am, I think things very far ahead in advance, so I wasn't actually going to buy a programmer for several months, until after Christmas. @jarrodparkes, thanks for the link, that would be perfect for some testing.

If anyone could steer me in the right direction for a programmer, that'd be great, but in reality I wouldn't need to know for awhile.
  • The TOP ones seem good. Willems are usually error proned garbage...although lots of people have them because most people are very cheap.

But yeah, also, don't program a game starting from the title screen. Good luck.
