  • Built the Ecto 1 today, very nice little set. Lots of small pieces and the detail is very nice. Price was a bit high for only 500+ pieces, but what can you expect from licensed sets.

Also I finally caved and bought the Simpsons house. There was a flood at our Toys R Us today, the Lego section was blocked off otherwise I might have bought it today. Guess i'll have to wait a week instead.

whats the rest of the lego lot that you got?

I don't really know. I got about 20 plastic totes of them. They were sorted by Color mostly with a few random boxes mixed in. I haven't even opened them to look yet.
  • I think i scored today

sucky part was when I asked the guy if they're complete he was like " yes they are, I just opened them"

so seals are broken and bags inside are all sealed hehe

(2 ewok sets and 1 home one 'mon calamri' set)
  • how much?

    those are awesome sets
  • paid 180 for all 3

    *side note

I also got some comics from the guy, 1 happens to be a cameo of doomsday and if i get a 9.6-9.8 grade on that comic - it basically pays for the lego sets
  • Awesome score, I like that Endor set, never had a chance to grab it before it got retired.

If you opened up both you could have one hell of a battle lol. There's a surprising amount of figures in that set.

    Its a great build though
  • page 6? time to give this thread a bump!

So growing up, I pretty much enjoyed two things; Lego and videogames. I got back into collecting the videogames of my youth about 5 years ago, so its only fair that I should get back into Lego too.

I sadly traded all my old games off towards newer systems when I was younger, but I was smart enough to keep my lego. So I do still have some lego sets, but they are at my parents place, and sadly in plastic totes instead of original boxes. But they are mostly complete, and have instructions, so thats not too bad. I know I have the big Egyptian pyramid, an older castle set, the big Hawaiian set, Darth Maul's ship, and a few other random sets too. So next time I'm out visiting family, I plan on picking them up.

I plan on buying lego sets as I come across them, but don't really plan on buying sets to keep for a few years and then sell (nothing wrong with that, its actually pretty smart, I just plan on casually collecting - for now lol). I am hoping to buy cib ones, but do plan on opening and playing with them, as I have a son and daughter, and want them to enjoy lego like I did, if they want to. Both are a little young at the moment though (son is 2.5 years old and daughter is 2 months).

Anyway, enough rambling lol. I came across an ad today for two sealed lego sets for $5 each, so grabbed both. I also went to Walmart, and had a couple bucks left on an old giftcard, so used that towards a lego set too. So in total, I spent about $17 (Canadian too, so thats like $3 American haha) and got the following three sealed sets. Nothing fancy, but I kind of like the little sets.

  • also, a question for discussion. I seen today that there is a star wars advent set out. I think it was $49.99 at target, and a little pricier at walmart. Its not the coolest looking set, but I seen that a lot of the mini figures had custom star wars christmas prints. From the collecting side, do you folks think the set is worth buying?

    http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/75056_LEGO_Star_Wars_Advent_Calendar

I seen that they had advent calendars for 2012 and 2013 as well, though some figures look different. I dont see myself buying one unless on a really good sale after Christmas, but do any of you plan on grabbing one?
  • If you want to just casually collect Lego because it's fun to build, then i'd just say get whatever sets you like the most. I just stick to the classic Star Wars sets and other stuff that I just want to build (Ghostbusters car, Simpsons house, etc)

The advent calenders are cool, and there's usually a couple figures in there that go up in value, but otherwise it's just some figures and some junky little builds, too much money imo. I'd rather put the money into a bigger set, get more build time with a set.

I agree. For me, it will mostly be star wars sets, though superhero sets would be fun too. And I'm sure I will find some random sets at garage sales, thriftstores, etc that I wont say no to for the right price.
  • If you're an adult the advent calendars are a little lame but my daughter (3 years old last year) absolutely loved it. She got to open and build a different small lego thing for most of December. So resale value not much but enjoyment value for kids is through the roof.

I've been on the casual collector side of lego for a couple years now. I buy the stuff I like and the stuff I find at thrift stores if it is sealed I sell it on ebay (not the big build stuff) and the stuff that is open I keep for the kids and play with. Personally I like large size build stuff that will take me at least 3 or 4 hours to build. I've got the simpsons house sitting in my basement brand new just waiting for me to play with it.
  • Growing up, Legos were my absolute favorite thing, along with my NES/SNES/N64. My parents threw out the majority of my childhood toys but I still have most of my Legos, thankfully. I have no pictures because they're divided into several totes in my parents' attic. I can talk to you for quite a long time about Legos I had growing up. Collected them like a madman from late 80s to the late 90s.
  • Just kind of starting a collection, but I DID just pick this gem up from a local retro store a couple days ago. A factory sealed Lego set #6066. From what I've researched, this was a GREAT find! What do you think? Id like to find out more info!

If I remember correctly, one of those figure's torsos is rare and worth a bit of cash. I had a set of those guys when I was a kid, it was their fortress, really cool stuff.
  • Wow, 6 minifigs in that set!

it's a nice little set and if ya got it cheap really good.

used its gone for 50-80 bucks so new it would be a bit more from there.

    nice find^
  • Thanks guys! Yeah I was super pumped to see it sealed. I figured at the very least it was a great collector piece due to its age and condition. What other sets are some key sets that are rare/popular/valuable?
  • I love everything from 1984-1993 era. That was the true golden age. 1994-1997 to a lesser extent. I go after anything CIB/sealed from those years

Pirate ships and castles from the mid 80's to mid 90's complete are usually pretty valuable, anything popular. Seems the more valuable stuff is what people had as kids or wanted as a kid and couldn't afford, it's not like games where it's some obscure limited run.

Check out Bricklink and go through the database. If I was gonna start a serious collection, i'd just buy up the stuff I had as a kid in the box, or stuff I wanted the most.

That would've been a nice find even if opened; I've been trying to get pieces to complete my old 6086 Black Knight's Castle and let's say it's going to be awhile. Fortunately the Panel Wall 3 x 3 x 6 corners weren't super expensive, if you know about these things they're vital for building certain castle towers and Blacktron sets.

  • I've never heard of brickowl. I've always used Bricklink.
