Anyone ever repro a FKROM (MMC4) game?

I have a Fire Emblem Gaiden I want to convert into English, but I can't find any info on repro-ing a MMC4 game. I figure it's the same as MMC3, but there's no guarantee of that. Here's TKROM / TSROM for reference:

TKROM & TSROM:
PRG socket:
Bend up pins 1, 2, 24, 30 and 31 (or cut tracks 2, 24, 30 and 31)
Solder pin 2 to hole 24 (A16)
Solder pin 24 to GND (OE)
Solder pin 30 to hole 1 (A17)
Solder pin 31 to hole 2 (A18)
CHR socket:
Bend up pins 1, 2, 22, 24, 30, 31 (or cut tracks 2, 22, 24 and 30)
Solder pin 2 to hole 24 (A16)
Solder pin 22 to hole 31 (CE or CHR /A13)
Solder pin 24 to hole 2 (OE or CHR /RD)
Solder pin 30 to hole 1 (A17)
Can that be applied to a FKROM game and have the EPROM work? Thanks!

  • Yes, the ROMs in MMC4 games have the same pinout as in MMC3 games. Nintendo used the same ROM-pinout for all of their boards up until MMC5.
  • Excellent, thanks! Now to just get the cartridge open...
  • Assuming you are opening a Famicom cart, go to Youtube and type "How to safely open Famicom cartridges" thats the method I use it's pretty effective.
  • I went to a hardware store and actually found a set of vice grips like in the video, with plastic grips and everything. Time to open some Famicom carts... And maybe get some more.
  • Thats the method I used and it works well but be prepared to have it take a few tries to get the clamps just right. Took me a few tries any ways.
  • I did a clamp-and-pop on a Crisis Force cart. Not so bad if you take it slow. Had to squeeze the board out carefully to preserve the label though. That was more fun!
  • I'd like to follow up on this thread by saying I was successful in converting a FE Gaiden cart into English. Thanks again everyone! No broken tabs either.
