The ability to use a standard controller instead of wagging your hand all over the place to do anything.
This.
The reason I have never been interested in any of the Wii Zelda games is because the MANDATORY Wii-motion controls. God they are awful.
I really liked Donkey Kong Country Returns and had fun with it, but couldn't help but imagine how great it'd have been if there weren't any stupid Wii-motion controls slowing down the gameplay constantly or screwing me over because I didn't shake my hands up and down fast enough. It's just a poor gimmick that didn't need to exist in some games.
I got the Zelda TP - GC version again the other day due to the black friday coupon at half price and luck that it was still there. It really still is the far better release of the two.
I found the GCN controller to be absolutely horrid and made the games nearly unplayable for me. Also, SMB: Sunshine was probably my least favourite SMB game of all time. I think that, aside from the Virtual Boy, the GCN was Nintendo's worst console.
On the contrary, the GC is worth the price of admission for the Game Boy Player alone. As I've explained on here before, I have one hooked up just for the purpose (thus it's like a whole 'nother console) and use my GC-ready Wii for my GC games.
That's kind of how I've been historically. I don't really have a soft cap or a hard one really with the NES/SNES, they wobble but I don't stop with a 'top' list. When in the past I've cleared stuff I've set a 'top 20' list for the N64 and GC they never went under, but these days they're more at the top30 area and I'll probably slowly add to it as I see fit.
I hadn't picked up much for it in a lot of months and happened on Gauntlet Dark Legacy in the last week. I had my tablet on me and the store had WiFi, found out their $35 price was $20 under 'ebay/retail' so I snapped it up and I'm glad I did. I hadn't messed with this version since helping out a bit with it when it was in development as I owned the original on Dreamcast. It's a fantastic game but still messes with me the graveyard area is the first world as it was like #3 in the original. I think I may just keep an eye out for more GC gems when they pop up as while some have gone up a little, they're not much breaching original retail and far less get all tingly in the shorts about it as they do with NES/SNES era stuff thankfully.
Most of the Nintendo systems are fun to collect for. I got most of my boxes that I wanted for N64 last year. I got my Gamecube the year it was released for Christmas. Got Luigi's Mansion and later Pikmin. Luigi's Mansion was the best launch title. Then Smash Bros. came out. That was all I wanted to play. I racked up so many hours because I dragged my Gamecube to my friends house. I never really knew the Gamecube was hated. I just knew everybody was super whiny about Wind Waker. I loved the way it looked because it was different. I believe I saved up for that game.
I have 41 games for it. I need to pick up collecting for it again. But my focus is Sega Saturn and Sega CD. So much harder to get games for.
Yeah I think it's safe for me to say that the GameCube is by far the most underrated console in video game history. And if I'm not mistaken, it's games can look just about every bit as good as the Hype-Box.
Depending on the effort by the developer Estil, the games did look better on the Cube. Beyond Good and Evil is a great example of it which even the developer said was best on there. It's the sloppy ports for quick cash that gave the impression of inferiority.
I can think of only a few reasons to own a game cube.
1) You are a Nintendo/Mario/Zelda fanboy.
2) Game Boy Advance player - Play real game boy and GB advance games outside of the confines of a mobile system. Much better than the Super game boy (more accurate speed).
3) Ikaruga. Easily the best game on the entire system, and the only official physical US release of the game. Most of the other games are pretty forgettable or have better ports on other systems.
Eh that's a bit unfair if you're being serious and not pranking a certain someone. There's some seriously solid titles the system only got and even some of the ports (online multiplayer aside) which were superior. If it comes down to hating the weird controller that I can understand as I have no idea what they were on with kidney bean buttons and 3 top buttons instead of 4.

Yeah it continues Nintendo's trend of bizarre and awkward controllers, starting with the N64 and onward. Maybe I missed some of the exclusives but I'm not a huge Mario/Zelda fan (at least since the N64 trend of annoying characters and kiddy speak) so those don't really do anything for me.
I know you're not, was more curious the reasoning behind it if it wasn't a prank. I totally agree with (and own) Ikaruga. Leaving out first party directly like Chibi Robo or indirectly like Cubivore there's some goodies. Eternal Darkness, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, Skies of Arcadia, Tales of Symphonia, Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 for just a few examples. If you get a freeloader to use imports Hudson put a solid set of 4 old games they cleaned up to modern and I've got Bonk and Star Soldier from it and there's others like a release of Mr Driller. It just depends what you're after and some are ports like Capcom vs SNK 2 EO and Beyond Good and Evil but they're there.

I might be into some of those imports, although I have no idea how to play them. Can you mod a stock gamecube?
Don't need one. There's something retail easily bought -- FreeLoader v1.06. The box looks purple, lettering font is GTA3 style on the front. You pop the disc in, turn it on, it puts up a splash screen and stops the disc, pop in your PAL or Japanese game in, and it starts automatically. I've got those 2 and also Doshin the Giant from the UK and they all work great. We actually got a vast majority of the world GC games but there are a few in both regions worth a look.

I have very few games but I'm so glad I got Ikaruga back in the day. That game is 99% of why I have a GC. Smash I think was the other reason. Or Mario Kart. We played both a lot either way lol.
Okay I know for sure I want to add these to my lineup:
Mario Baseball
Mario Tennis
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door (I should get the SNES/N64 versions first though)
Wario World
Zelda Twilight Princess (I hope more traditional controls will make this game better; the fishing in the Wii version is especially frustrating)
But these I'm kinda on the fence about:
Mario Party 4-7 (I don't mind paying a reasonable premium for cartridges if the same is super rare and/or super popular but I don't know about these disc ones)
Star Fox Adventures (to hear some people/reviews talk it's not even worthy of the name; are they right?)
Tales of Symphonia (I hear this game is really popular but it also looks fairly expensive too)
WarioWare (how's the solo mode?)
Now of course I want to be extra careful to have the blue chip games in new or at least like new condition...but suppose at some point I get a stack of used/scratched up GC discs for free or nearly free or something? How tolerant is the Wii in terms of reading scratched up GC discs?

I have Star Fox Adventures, but have yet to play it so can't help there.
As for WarioWare, to me the solo mode is good. I see it was more of a time killer than anything, and is fun. Not nearly as fun as multi-player, but the price tag on it is usually low enough to warrant snagging up IMHO.
Edit: Mario party 6 and 7 are good fun from what I've played so far. Only other ones I've played are 8 and 9, with 9 being my fav in the series thus far. However I think at least 6 and 7 are worth it if you can snag them for under the going price.
I think I'll most likely get at least Mario Party 4. Reasonably priced (I think...) and I'll at least have the first one. Still gotta get Mario Party 3 at some point though to complete the N64 trilogy.
I have always loved the Gamecube, it was my first Nintendo console (but not my first console [PSX,] unfortunatetly.)
The games that I got for it at first (Mario Superstar Baseball & Super Mario Sunshine) were great and it was only a few years ago when I noticed just how many gems that I had missed.
The Gamecube has a lot of unique games and plenty of damn good sports games that I still need to find in good, playable condition for affordable prices.
Finding a copy of NCAA Basketball 2K3 is currently a high-priority for me.
Well, at long last I found a NEW copy of Zelda Twilight Princess GC version for a good price (if I had bought it at launch it would've been $53 (counting sales tax) but if you adjust for inflation it was really $61.50 so I didn't pay too much more for it right?)
Loved the gamecube and still do, I honestly think the graphics were superior to the PS2, and I'm a PS2 fanboy, does anyone think this? Playing Ikaruga on it was amazing, I had a pirate copy my boss gave me back in 2001 for the dreamcast but the thing kept crashing, being able to own a licensed version of the game was great.
My collections small but heres the bulk of it, just need to get Fire Emblem and Chibi Robo and then I'll consider my GC collection complete
Ehh you're not off the mark. The PS2 was no slouch either, especially when it was designed but the GC and XB came out over a year later. Depending how you broke down the parts and performance the GC actually edged out everything in what you could do and see on screen but the lousy mini-dvd to prevent piracy crippled the very capable system from getting more third party players. Despite that though they did get a lot of third party support that the N64 and systems since have lacked, it was really the last really solid Nintendo console to enjoy.
Your picture reminded me I should get back Capcom vs SNK 2 at some point as it's a fun one, and with the little boxes I see in your pic I have a few GC JP/PAL imports I'd like to snap up in time as well. I only keep certain games around as I like to keep my overall pile of games small or I'd probably go crazy on GC among other stuff.
kentgames, the graphics on the GC were in fact far superior to the PS2. If you check each console's spec/tech sheets you'll find that although the PS2 had well over a year head start on the GC/Xbox and did in fact run away with the 6th gen console war (they sold the most consoles overall, most software titles, and was by far the last 6th gen system to be retired, which it did so in 2012), it came at a price of having far weaker specs than the GC/Xbox. Though most didn't realize it at first glance, you'd be very surprised to learn that the GC was at or near a tie with the Xbox in terms of what kinds of graphics it can do. But because Nintendo made the GC a strictly games only console and didn't add extra fluff like DVD players and hard drives it was able to be a mere $200 at launch.
But yeah, I'd say the Metroid and the Zelda games (both of them in their own way) had about the best graphics you could hope for on the GC...you'd be quite hard pressed to find anything on the Xbox that can do better.
The GBA has always been my favorite handheld, specifically the GBA SP. So many great games for the system. The GC on the other hand,I have no interest in at all. Honestly I think I've played the GC once. I played the latest Madden on it for like ten minutes. (I know....not enough time to really judge a system.) I don't hate the system,I just don't have any experience or history with it.

Great to hear. I'm just over the half way mark for GC games myself.
I think I'll just do the top 40 or 50 for so each for GC, GBA, N64. NES/SNES will always be my flagship consoles.
