Has the GameCube been getting more respect the past few years?

  • That generation was probably the most lopsided ever. DC fizzled out immmediatly, PS2 dominates everything, Xbox gets more support than GCN even though it only sold like 3 million more consoles (21mil vs 24mil) Practically a tie if you round it up. That was the generation when gaming stopped being fun for me.

  • Lopsided is right and it made no sense other than the faux stigma Nintendo got stuck with thanks to Sony in the N64 era and their stupid mini-dvds too scared some off. That generation was for me too the last one for home consoles made by Nintendo where the fun was. The Wii was not fun for most of its life and the WiiU while superior in fun I find very hard to get motivated to use (but if I do I like it more than the Wii which makes no sense.) Sometimes I look at the Wii and WiiU and wonder if Nintendo has just soured me enough I can't walk away yet but derive more pleasure using a PS3 and a 3DS over it.
  • ive been wanting to get more into the gamecube, i got it for christmas when it came out and never really bought too many games for it, i have the zeldas, marios, smash, waverace, rogue squandron, but thats really about it, i was in high school when it came out and was still too fixed on my nes and snes to care about much new gen stuff
  • Gamecube is my least favorite of the Gen. I gave it a solid chance too but I just can't get over that shit controller (I know, I know, its everyone's fav). I like the Dreamcast, PS2 and Xbox all more still. I still keep one around and have some of the solid titles just for gaming sakes. I gave a bunch of games to my nephews and sold the rest. So for me, I actually lost a little more respect for it and gained more for the PS2.
  • I owned a gamecube probably about 2/3 of the way through it's life cycle, and the only games I cared about for it were time splitters 2, and Resident Evil 1-4

However, now that I am looking back, there are actually quite a lot of games I wish I'd tried back then. Fire emblem, pikmin, wind waker, mario sunshine, luigi's mansion. And a lot of other ones.
  • Thanks to Sammyboy I have most of the popular and hard to find games knocked off my "need" list for a full library.

Sadly, I barely play the games. Over the half way mark with games most sites add to their top 10 list, and I only try them because I'm collecting for the GC. Never would have bought Wind Waker or Metroid Prime if it wasn't for that, now I recommened both.

Nintendo could never get the word out that the GC was technically superior to the PS2. I remember reading a Time or Newsweek console buyer's guide article way back in the early aughts that called the Gamecube the weakest console out of the three 6th gen consoles. The small size of the console, mini-DVDs, and price created this impression of a low-end machine.

Leaving out first party directly like Chibi Robo or indirectly like Cubivore there's some goodies. Eternal Darkness, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, Skies of Arcadia, Tales of Symphonia, Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 for just a few examples. If you get a freeloader to use imports Hudson put a solid set of 4 old games they cleaned up to modern and I've got Bonk and Star Soldier from it and there's others like a release of Mr Driller. It just depends what you're after and some are ports like Capcom vs SNK 2 EO and Beyond Good and Evil but they're there.

I might be into some of those imports, although I have no idea how to play them.  Can you mod a stock gamecube?

I think so; I just ended up buying a Japanese Gamecube board and swapping that into a US console.   I was using one of the freeloader discs, but it wouldn't boot Star Soldier.

Dream TV Fighters is the bomb.

Consider the source.  They don't know jack about video games.  They probably only called it the "weakest console" just because it didn't have a stupid DVD player or hard drive (though to be fair the GC probably didn't have its Game Boy Player yet).

What really counts is the lamestream gaming media (though that'll be a bit harder since they retried Nintendo Power) and advertising.  And as for the advertising for the WiiU, please in the name of all that is holy NO KIDS (the family in general enjoying is okay but don't make the kids the main focus)!!!  Seriously, is Nintendo just going out of their way to validate the kiddie stereotype (like using the dreaded YG-words descrbing their idea behind the 2DS)?  Why not have ads showing college dorm students (especially when 'Kart and 'Smash come out later this year), or those who grew up with the NES/SNES and digging the NES Remix and vitural console sorts of deals?  Geez, they really pay people 6/7 figures just to come up with advertising ideas?  I just gave them the cliff notes version of exactly in what way to advertise and it only took me about five minutes to think/type up and I wasn't paid one green rupee.  Go figure.

  • Wow, has it already been nearly ten years (2007) that the GC was retired (I think Madden 2008 was the final GC game in the US)??? And what I mean by the GC being the Harry Truman of game consoles is that Truman, like the GC was especially unpopular in its past few years, and in Truman's case left office with the lowest approval rating ever, just as the GC finished dead last behind the Xbox. But over time, the GC like Truman has gotten more and more respect and now both are highly regarded. Look at how much blue chip GC games over the past few years have been!
  • I've been actively collecting a full set of gamecube games and i must say, the quality of the library is overall pretty high. THQ is the publisher of the most stinkers in the mix with their cheap licence games. It owns in my opinion, the best JRPG ive ever played in Tales of Symphonia, The best Smash Bros in Melee, the best 3d Zelda in Twilight Princess(I'm sorry, Zelda was meant to be played with a paddle, not motion control). Best 3d platformer in Sunshine, and just tons of classic and timeless games overall.
  • I don't hear as much slamming of the gamecube anymore, so I'd say it's getting more respect now. The Gamecube controller adapter for smash bros was a hot seller for a while. Going for 500% of it's value on ebay.

I recall plenty of hardcore gamers (who know a lot about video games, or at least expend a lot of energy on them) dissing GameCube in that generation. Definitely calling it underpowered, weak, kiddie, etc.
  • Nintendo has always somewhat maintained a "kiddie" or a family-friendly reputation throughout the years. During the time the GC was announced I honestly never considered buying it in favor of the PlayStation 2. Yeah the launch did have Melee but for the longest time after that I felt the GC lacked what the PS2 made up for. However one game that drew me right to the GC was Resident Evil ad that's one of the big one's that stick out for me. But over the past few years I have played more of the library such as Metroid Prime, Luigi's Mansion and Resident Evil 0.
  • I'll put it to you this way: I regret trading my gamecubes games (about 50) around 06 to fund my xbox 360 and a couple of launch titles. I sat on a gold mine (Twin Snakes, Metroid combo pack, OOT/Windwaker Combo pack, cubivore, gotcha force, chibi robo, and ikaruga were my high priced games). Dumb, dumb, dumb decision. And now i'm trying to get my 50 or so titles back. I'm not having an issue getting the third party titles that I loved (THPS series, NHL Hitz, 007 Nightfire, etc), it's the 1st party stuff that i'm having a hard time justifing spending the cash on.. especially when I've just branched into master system and saturn collecting.

But yeah, my Super Mario Sunshine bundled gamecube was an amazing christmas gift. Sophmore year in highschool.. man, brings me back.
  • Gamecube rocks, other then the NES its my favorite system.
  • I should take a photo of my gcn memory cards from that era. GCN collectors would salivate at the saves I have. At least I still have all my original hardware. And the hard to find component cables.

lucky I wish I could get my hands on some component cables.  I remember seeing them in the store when Gamecube was still current gen.  Damn the whole hindsight 20 20 and such I would have bought everyone I could get my hands on.

  • I had a LCD TV in a room. My parents were early adopters in the early 2000s, so i grabbed the cables for my GCN... not knowing now what i have.
  • I loved the GameCube, it's my third favorite console after N64 and SNES. I haven't bought anything for it a good year or two, as I have just about all of my favorites, but justify the rising prices of other game I want for it. I still love it though I barely play it anymore. I remember it was the "uncool" console to get during its lifetime, and that bad reputation remained for years until very recently when all of a sudden I'm hearing a lot of people fondly remembering it. Also prices have skyrocketed for many of the rarer games in the last year or so. I men Cubivore is $200 game now? Craziness. Anyway, I'd love to collect more for it but I have other priorities. And yeah it's nuts that it's been a decade since the Wii came out and replaced the GameCube. How time flies...
  • Pretty good all around system if you ask me. Plus, there are lots of games you can (or at least could) get fairly cheap. RE 4, metroid prime 1 & 2, Pikmin all use to cost right around $10. And if you consider $20 to be fairly cheap you had even more options; basically any Mario game, double dash, superstar baseball, sunshine, every resident evil game but code Veronica, Zelda's... I'm fortunate to have never sold off or traded away my games completely as I still enjoy them even to this day. I'm sure the love will go up
  • To be it is basically like any other system that Nintendo has released since the N64....The first party titles are excellent as always with a handful of third party titles.

Still is kind of mind boggling that Nintendo managed to get those exclusive Resident Evil games.....And MAN were they good.

The Mario and Zelda games are getting up into the $30's and $40's now and still climbing unless you can find them cheap in the wild.

  • I had the Gamecube when it first came out during the Christmas season and had a love/disappointed relationship during its run. While it has some great exclusive games, I was really disappointed with the lack of third party support (really wanted to play some GTA back in the day) in comparison to PS2 and Xbox and Nintendo pushing the connectivity and god forbid that E-Reader instead of online gaming. Now with prices going up and the fact quite a bit of games on the Gamecube still only exist for the system, I really appreciated owning one with many of the titles before they got high in demand. After all, the Gamecube really stands out for being a unique and solid system.
  • 115 posts and no mention of Skies of Arcadia Legends? Best reason to own the system besides Ikaruga.

You can get Ikaruga on Steam for cheap and looks much better with vertical (tate) mode so its a moot point now.

Best reason to own the system is Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door. That or wind waker.

And Tales of Symphonia.  Love having that game.

  • Haven't gotten around to doing Tales of Symphonia...but I have done Tales of Phantasia (first one in the series)!   How does Symphonia stack up to Phantasia?
  • I always respected the Gamecube! It was the first system my parents ever bought me for my own since all the systems prior to that were household shared.

I never did give my GC the attention it deserved though, the only games it ever really got play time with were Zelda games and Smash Bros (which I agree was the best in the series). Luigi's Mansion was pretty kick ass! I remember when GC games started going on sale at the end of the systems life, I should of taken advantage of that cause now a days the games are pretty pricey.
