Super Mario 3 Sprite swap? (Will Pay $$$)

I am wondering is sprite swaping super mario 3 with custom sprites would be possible.

I am just looking to replace mario and the princess.

My 2 year anniversary with my girlfriend is this november... I had a really cool idea to sprite swap her favorite game (Mario 3) with sprites of myself (as mario) and her (as the princess) and putting the sprite swapped rom on a repro cart as a 2 year gift.

The problem is... not only do i not know if htis is even possable but i dont know how to make sprites, Do any kind of rom hacking, nor how make a repro cart.... So I am asking you guys...  Is is possable?

And I am willing to pay anyone who can do this for me.

  • It's possible to do, and it's an easy rom hack, If all you want to do is have peach save mario. You may have to create sprites for peach if you don't want to reuse smb2 sprites. There should be a utility for making hacks of smb3. Check out romhacking.org

I'm not sure about putting it on a repro, though. You could always put it on a flash cart if the repro looks daunting
  • Should be doable. I don't think SMB3's graphics are compressed. Just get yourself a tile editor. I hear YY-CHR is great. Now tile editing is not easy, it's extremely tedious. You'll probably quit before finishing all of Mario's sprites. But who knows, if you're determined, perhaps it can be done.
  • I am reeeeeeaaaallly a noob when it comes to this stuff... I dont even know how to go about editing a sprite... let alone trying to make it look like me. DX

I downloaded a rom editor for SMB3 but it wont let me edit sprites, just the worlds.

A tile editor you say? Eh, i really hope i can do this. DX

Yea.... there are alot of sprites....

Is there no one on here that is willing to do this for money?

Even if i did manage to redo all the sprites for mario and peach i dont know if i could even get somone to put it on a repro cart....

Ugh, I really want this to happen. =[
  • Ah, how unfortunate. You may be limited to what you can do if you're trying to put yourself in Mario's shoes. You could also try changing the story.
  • This sounds like a great 3 year Anniversary gift... Sorry bud, but if I were you, I'd start looking for something different for the 2 year, and make sure that this was done 100% correctly without the stress of a crazy time crunch.

Now until November should be PLENTY of time for something like this.

  • You should be able to edit the sprites with YY-CHR, get yourself some graph paper first and draw yourself and your GF as pixel art. Look up NES sprites to see what your limited to for colours and size and base your pixel art from that.

If he can find someone with experience to do it, sure, it's possible... But not only is there the matter of the sprite hack, he'll also need someone to make the cart for him.

If he decides to make the sprites himself, he will need time to actually learn and experiment. I don't know his apptidude for this sort of thing, but he claims to be a complete novice. If he does it himself, I'd be more concerned about the timeframe.

Unless OP is a total nincompoop he should be capable of reading a tutorial on something like YY-CHR and figuring out how to swap sprites in the course of an afternoon or two, tops.

The "hard part" is making the sprite art for himself and his girlfriend.

If he sucks hard at artistic pursuits, that could be a nonstarter.  But if he is putting a bounty on it (which it sounds like he is), then he should be able to get a couple of drawings where he could figure out the animation frames from them.

Getting the cart burned is probably the easiest part.  Repro makers seem to be a dime-a-dozen nowadays.

Seems like there was someone else seeking a pixel artist recently. Is there anybody currently doing freelance work that we could put him in touch with?

    Thanks guys for your comments!

I have only ever done pixle art in minecraft skins and such...

I really am a noob at this stuff but i am sure i can learn, If i can do a few sprites a day i should be able to get it done in time

I was really hoping i could find a pixel artist who i could pay to do the sprites for me but it seems they might be more uncommon than i thought.

I guess if I can manage to do the sprites myself i will be able find a repro maker to put it on a cart.

If anyone knows a sprite artist that would be willing to do this as a commission job I would love to know but otherwise ill be learning a new still over the next few weeks. ^_^
  • I can try to sprite you as an 8bit char
  • Step 1 "Acquire" the rom.

Step 2 Download Tile Layer Pro

Step 3 Load rom into Tile Layer Pro

Step 4 Scroll down until you see the sprites starting, basically around Offset 00040010. This is found on the bottom left of the Tile Layer Pro software. Locate the proper one for the main character.

Step 5 Step 4 can also be done with FCE EMulator to help you find exactly what tileset is for character design and movement. There will obviously be more than one as the character Mario moves differently and has multiple costume changes.

Good Luck. I did something similar to Super Mario BRos
  • Might I just add, if this is going to be a gift to your girl, shouldn't you be swapping her sprite with Mario's and yours with the Princess'? Wouldn't she want to save you as herself, not as you while she's trapped in the damsel in distress trope?

Dunno what else to say, outside of fixed. I could do it, but with schhol starting, having a job, and having a pretty monumental project on my shoulders already, I just  can't do it. But it's not too bad for newbies to do honestly.

Its suposed to be a like "ill overcome any obsticale for you" type of message, although i am sure she would also love to play as herself.

Thanks! Your awesome for willing to do that but i am going to have to do the whole mario sprite set replaced with me and there are a lot...

So i think its better if it is all done by one person. Thanks anyways!!
  • Honestly I would do Super Mario Bros, not 3. It's quite a bit easier after all.
  • well, as you want, all the spritesheet isn't that hard, I already did one spritesheet for protoman (something I have been colaborating to a really good project)... so, if you want help or advice, you can tell me

It's a light-hearted anniversary gift, not a progressive feminist centerpiece
  • You know what, forget about it.

As for the op, good luck! That surely would be a nice gift.
