Interested in delving into SNESdev

Well, the topic says it all, but basically I wonder if there are the kind of guides out there for getting a game off the ground like there are with the NES guides.  I know that with the NES, there was a lot of erroneous info out there, so I need to know what's good and what isn't.

Note: I'm not making any promises for a new game.  I just want to play around with some things for now.

Where do we start?

  • superfamicom has a pretty good site, also give nocash snes specs a look over. There will be no tutorials, not much help, not many tools, especially for sound, etc. You'll also nees wladx or some weirdly-named compiler most people. Good luck. If you started there it probably wouldn't be too bad, and it's honestly not too bad if you give it time to learn. But SNES dev over all is just harder just because of the hardware. You think the APU on the NES is bad and the PPU writing is a bitch, wait until you mess with the SPC, which has it's own language.

I use bass by byuu for 5A22 assembly, not as much of a PITA as WLA DX.

Edit: Learn the differences between the 6502 and the 65816 first ofc.
  • Hey everyone, Sivak just promised to make a Battle Kid 3 for the SNES!

    Super Battle Kid....

All joking aside there is a number of guys that frequent SNESfreaks.com that have some knowledge in this, I'm sure most of them can speak english however the forum there is in German and Google translate is terrible at translating German to English.

I'm sure with the positive reception you got for Battle Kid that you would have no problem getting lots of help with SNES programming.

I look forward to seeing what comes of this, good luck.

    Edit:

Check this out maybe of some help

  • I learned the basics of SNES programming around January-February, and I couldn't find any good "getting started" guides/tutorials.

Personally I'm using CA65 as an assembler.

Why don't you just finish off the trilogy with Battle Kid 3 City of Chaos for the NES?

But seriously, a battle kid trilogy on the nes would probably go down as one of the greatest trilogies for that system.  And you know the programming inside and out, so it definitely won't take as long as starting from scratch with the snes.

I think the NES deserves the battle kid trilogy, and the 8 bit world really makes your characters and world shine through.  So I hope you reconsider .

  • I say make Battle Kid 3 thru 6 for NES, then make Battle Kid 7 for SNES
  • Maybe third BK game for NES first, then somethink like BK All-Stars or BK Trilogy for SNES (ports of all three games with improved visuals and sound in a single cart)? Would be pretty cool.
  • Well, I don't want to start any project, per se, I just am curious about doing the basic stuff. Anyway, it looks like there's a fair amount of resources out there. I guess it's just a matter of learning the various registers and whatnot on how to get things done visually.

In October I hope I can look at some of this stuff.

Please please please finish off the trilogy on the nes.  We're begging you to!
