for those of you who use GQ-4X

This hardware/software is a piece of...

In all seriousness, this thing is soo full of bugs and erros. If you are considering buying it, please don't and buy something a bit more expensive of better quality.

  • I think Gwyndion was selling a sealed copy of Magic Boy as well. You might check out his FS thread if bidding gets too high on that one there.

lol, piece of CACA...I get it now.
  • Looks like you have a fake chip and not a faulty programmer. The software is fine. There's a lot of fake TSOP's coming out of China, especially since the cost went up a few months back.
  • Turn off ID check, it doesn't do anything useful.
  • Nah i just thought it was funny when it id'd that "CACA" (Poop). It is a Fujitsu 29F033C, but Sometimes goes crazy and id's weird stuff.

However, the buggy part about this software/hardware is that if you get 1 error with chip A file A, your will keep getting the same error if you try several other chips with the same file.

Changing the file directory or name helps, but often you just have to unplug/reboot pc/ or just plain leave it alone for a while.

Also if you are burning chips Model A, and want to then start burning chips model B, Model B will fail a lot.

Im getting a better one, at least on the 500+ mark.

Collectors cards and games site has one for 40 bucks. but the owner is weird. IT seems like he doesnt want to sell his stuff but has it up for sale on the site. Ive inquiried a couple of times about some of his games for sale and he always has excuses for his boxed/sealed games.
  • Between this and a Top3100, I made well over 1,000 repros without any major issues.

    Get better chips.
  • The Device works very well. 9/10 it's user error or chip error. Don't blame the device lol.

Granted the occasional device does need to be fixed.
  • Willems are known to be pieces of junk, nothing new. It'd be a nice project to build a programmer that actually works....one day....

It works about 1 out 5 times for me. I have to plug/unplug a lot of times, and restart the software.

  • my top853 does the same thing. But I use my on VMWARE Windows XP OS.
  • VMWARE?

Have you ever heard of the FLASHPRO1000 programmer?
  • I am 100% in the same boat as you sir, I just got a bunch of 29f033c's in from buyicnow and I can't get a single one to write. I keep getting errors, not sure if its the chips or the programmer. such a pain
  • I read recently that certain versions of the Willem programmer software didn't properly support writing 29f033c TSOPS... I don't recall the specifics, but there was a solution offered on the nesdev.com forum. I also have a GQ-4X, but haven't placed an order to buyicnow yet as they're out of stock of the mounted TSOPS each time I check. Once I get some TSOPS of my own I'll be going through the same motions.
  • I really need to find that post, I keep getting the same error for every chip I try "write failed, Address=0x000800,Buffer=0x20 Device=0xC7. Any one have any suggestions?
  • Device=0xC7 means the programmer doesn't think the chip is blank (0xFF). Does it verify the erase?
  • Doesn't verify the erase. any way to go about fixing this?
  • Did you blank check?
  • tried blank checking, blank check fails as well. when I erase it only takes about 36 seconds to erase it which is weird cause when i set the device to 29f032b and erase the 29f033c it only goes to 36% and then says it's erased.
  • try adding this to your device list:

    Name="MBM29F033C*TSOP40",ID="04D4",Class="29F040B",Category="FLASH",MFG="FUJITSU",CodeSize="4194304",DIP="100011110101",Adapter="TSOP40B-DIP32(ADP-077 and ADP-082)";
  • Already have, the things just so glitchy with these chips, most of the time it will freeze while erasing, freeze before starting to write. I can't do anything even with the extra ac adapter. I think of buying a new one and returning this to MCU but not sure if there are any out there that work flawlessly with the 29f033c
  • Blow in the chip socket like a NES cart Seriously. I was having issues burning some chips, and I tried everything, so I figured "bet this works" (being a wise ass), and surprisingly, I haven't had an issue since. It must've been some dust, or a hair, or something that I couldn't physically see as it looked brand new.
  • All about the programming adapters. I used to have no luck with my GQ, then I stopped using cheap parts for programming adapters. Got my boards printed by Laen's and use only Aries high quality ZIF sockets. Works like a charm now.
  • No like with the high quality adapter I swear this programmer is just messed up. I've only been able to write one chip out of the 30 I bought. Granted I havent tried them all yet. Now the question is whether I should get a new GQ-4X or some other programmer.

Mine works near-flawlessly with 29f033c (no programmers really work flawlessly), if it messes up I just erase the chip and start again, with either a 3x or a 4x (though I primarily use the 3x for those chips, it is just because the 4x will not verify code for some reason) I had every one of those problems until I updated the drivers for the programmer and the firmware. I have 2 desktops and one laptop. One of the desktops has the original software and drivers off the included CD and it displays all of those issues. On the other two I do not have any problems, but I am using the same programmer with the same adapters. It also helps to make sure you are using good, stable USB ports as I have to use the rear USB ports on my one desktop in order for it to work... I will also note I haven't modified the software code at all to allow it to ID that chip, I just ignore the ID check every time.

If you are in this to make money then i reccomend a higher end programmer, if you just want to make your own repros the GQ-3X is cheap and works, you can also pay buyicnow .50 to program whatever you buy from them.

I can second this, it works.

  • tried it, and PiM-Games I actually got my high quality adapter from you remember. The adapter seems fine, I've contacted MCU to exchange the programmer

Hopefully you have better luck with their support/customer service department than I did. When I let them know I was having issues and fell inside of my warranty range, I never heard back from them.
