Blockbuster Store Closing

Well it really is the end of an era.  The last Blockbuster in my town is closing.  Hollywood bit the dust a couple years back and slowly but surely all the local Blockbuster stores have fallen.  Not too surprised, Blockbuster started to go down hill in recent years and their prices just kept going up and up until I said enough.

Anyway figured it would be worth stopping into the store closing sale, maybe I could pick up a few criterion or out of print dvds for cheap.  Well no luck on that front but I did see a couple cheesy flicks like Manborg and Unlucky Charms worth owning for $10.

The real surprise was New Super Mario Bros Wii U.  Games are advertised as 20% off.  This one was listed as $27, while the others were listed as $30.  I go to ring it up and he says it rang up as $30 but he knocked $4 off and took 20% off $30.  You following the math?  That means I got it for $20.  Now all I need is a Wii U.

Blockbuster was right by my high school and they had that unlimited pass so I was in there every other day renting stuff.  Good times.

But they started raising their prices to $6 for movies and $10 for games, it just got absurd, you were halfway to owning it at that point.  They also tried to branch out and sell more new movies and posters and other junk that just ate up floor space and soon half the store wasn't even rentals anymore.  This also was around the time of the rise of netflix and gamefly, so it was hard to justify a trip to the video store when you could get a better selection online, for cheaper, delivered right to your door, and no late fees.

  • I never used Blockbuster, there wasn't one near me. But the last remnant of it locally is a massive Blockbuster pole sign, I want it XD
  • The last time I went to blockbuster, I paid $14 to rent a game for a wk... Then they got bought out by a gas station about 2 mns later.
  • @fox...

if the store is closing, are they to the point of selling off shelving yet? i bought some shelving from a Blockbuster that closed around my area, and when i got it home i was missing 5 brackets.

i was wondering if you could ask if they would sell some brakets, i can provide pics if you can help.
  • The end of an era! As a kid, we used to rent movies, VHS and DVDs, but nowadays, it's all about Apple TV! But I'll always have fond memories of these video rental stores, even though there were no blockbusters in Switzerland.
  • Pretty sure all the Blockbusters around me has closed down, but we still got some Family Videos.

Miss going to Video rental stores and picking out a game to play for the week/weekend. :[
  • We no longer have any Blockbusters here in the Sarasota/Bradenton area of Florida (last one afaik closed down about 4 months ago), but we do have this vintage local video store that has been open since the 90s opened up in the middle of town. No video games though, unfortunately :-(
  • all the blockbusters here closed i wanna say 2 years ago... something like that

i remember they had like ZERO closing deals, especially on games...

  • I hated Blockbuster. I remember renting a PS2 from them and half of the games I rented didn't work. I went to the store 3 or 4 times swapping games until I got 2 that would actually play. They were ruthless with the late fees too.

That being said, still sad seeing the old rental places shutting down, it really is the end of an era. I just buy or pirate movies now.
  • Wow I haven't seen a Blockbuster or really any video rental store in the northeastern Texas region for many years, kind of surprised to hear they are still around even with Redbox and Netflix. The one good thing I remember when the last Blockbuster closed in my area it was just kind of out of no where with not really any sort of warning, and my buddy happened to have like 3 PS3 games that were new at the time rented out that he just ended up getting to keep because when he went to return them the store was just closed, and I ended up with several horror DVD's that are some what annoying to find as I collect them as well.
  • Nothing easy about closing shop.

  • I still remember when Blockbuster was about half franchisees then bought them all back up. Yeah, good move Big Blue!

I talked to a BB store manager a couple of weeks ago when I noticed they've all but eliminated their game selection except for a few big titles and that's it. I asked them what's up and she told me that the company is actually scouting Gamestop sized stores around the city because that is what they feel is the future of BB.

If they'd stop changing their pricing plans every other month, going from 1 day to 5 day to 3 day rentals, ect.. They had a sweet game pass for $15/mo, but nothing was ever in. It was in effort to compete with the likes of Gamefly and others out there. She told me that was a major problem, people would take out 2-3 games, and NEVER return them, so nothing was ever in.

Yet the prices on used games are higher than new versions STILL. I asked why the insane pricing, she said that corporate sets the prices and they've been told over and over to try to keep these prices updates but they apparently don't care. IE..Skyrim original edition for 39.99 USED, Super Mario WII for 39.99 USED, no name DS games for 29.99 USED, ect..ect...

Want old dvd's that no one has heard of or cared for? We got tons of that crap for 9.99 ea!!!! Oh yeah, 3 for $20. Hoorayy!!! Oh btw, the boxes are all sun faded from sitting outside on their "sidewalk sale" for months on end.

What's up with their Blu Rays only coming in that generic DVD case with an artwork/cover printed copy? I think it makes it so they can recycle the cases and the studios save money by not producing bluray cases to send out.
  • Local one here closed earlier this year, I caught word too late time I got up there all the games were already gone and slim pickings on dvds and blurays.
  • I have a blockbuster an hour north of me and hour south of me lol. I have gone to them for some of their pretty good new release deals. The ones that closed down near me had no games for some reason. I am not sure if the workers took them or what. All they had were movies in sleeves and a ton of candy lol.
  • It was slim picking on games. They only had two shelves front and back. I remember games used to take up about a quarter of the store but I hadn't been there is like 3 years so I have no idea if they downsized or just shipped a good chunk of the games off to another location right before the clearance sale like they did with most of the new releases.
  • I was so excited about the sale that I went in during my lunch break, but yeah - the pickings were super slim. Got four movies for an average of five bucks a piece, but most of the other dvds were priced at 9.99. At that price, eBay, Amazon, Hastings, and of course Goodwill are all cheaper options for used movies.
  • My Blockbuster closed in 2009, and it was the same deal, mostly candy left when I showed up. I remember I ended up buying Bruno for cheap and that's all I got. My friend got a sweet cardboard cutout of something (I honestly cant remember what now lol) and I remember being pissed at myself that I didn't even think to ask about that type of stuff, it was still there when I was.
  • I miss the local mom and pops way more than the Blockbusters, but here is my main beef:

I really do not like the idea of not being able to find something that I want that night. I know that there are a ton of options on instant Netflix, and Amazon and bla bla, but there was something about being with a few buddies and just going to the store and picking out some obscure movie or if someone heard about some cult classic or something..I can remember this happening with a lot of different movies like The Beatles Yellow Submarine, Frank Zappa's 200 Motels, Monty Python, Taxi Driver, Dog Day Afternoon, the list could go on forever.
