The Love Machine

5/21/14 - Sample Label

1/9/14 - Functional Engine

So, I had some free time when I wasn't at home to work on The Grind (we'll just pretend like I don't have multiple active threads on one forum), and I thought I'd revisit this.  I put a couple hours work into it, added some pictures that I made bead art out of, and viola!  It works.  See the attachment.

Let me know what you think!!

11/14/13

I had an inspiration last night.  I'm not sure I'll actually do this, but it's fun to discuss.

Anyway, I would like to make a game for special dates.  It would be customized for every person (except that the music would probably be the same for each build).  I would make it so that there are 4ish screens that tell that special someone your message.  It would include custom pictures on each screen of whatever. It wouldn't have a mass release, but be more of a special order item.  For example:

Screen 1 - start, title, etc.

Screen 2 - 1st picture, 1st part of the message

Screen 3 - 2nd picture, 2nd part of the message

Screen 4 - 3rd picture, 3rd part of the message

Screen 5 - Final picture, Final message or question or whatever.

Pretty simple and such.  Probably best used for proposals, V day, Birthday, etc.  Cause even nerdy stuff can be fun.  Probably a CNROM game at least.

Note that this isn't in response to anything, just something that occured to me while I was watching TV or YouTube or something.

Any thoughts?

Comments

  • I think that would be awesome!
  • Sounds like a pretty awesome v day card! I'd rather spend $40-50 on this than $5 on a hallmark card.
  • I hacked the Rickroll rom into a birthday cartridge for my wife. The original creator was nice enough to put a custom song on it for me since PCM sound was/is a bit too much me to learn in a short time frame.
  • I love it. I want it.
  • I will take two! One for my sons bday and one for my daughters bday!
  • Sorry to butt in like this, but...Good news, everyone. Back in the May I created a coding environment for emunes.pl demo.

The system allows for a number of different effects. You can check out the demo at Youtube(The text is a little long, you can skip to 3:53 for third part of demo). Note that not all possible effects are used in the demo. Believe it or not, but the demo uses mapper 02, UNROM-no IRQs used here. My system can also defeat few NES limiations(To some extend) like 256 tiles for background limit or palette attribute limit.

List of things that system is capable of, at the current moment:

    -Mappers supported

    a) Mapper 00, NROM

    b) Mapper 02, UNROM

    c) Mapper 03, CNROM

    d) Mapper 04, MMC3

    e) Mapper 71, Camerica

    f) Mapper 232, Another Camerica mapper

    -3 Text effects

a)Instant Text draw (Only before turning screen ON)

    b)Letter by letter draw.

c)Right to Left draw (plus movement).

d)Text "Melting" in and out (not used in emunes demo)

    -NES limitations workarounds

a)16x8 px attribute table instead of 16x16 px

b)Can use more background tiles (512 for all mappers except CNROM and MMC3, these two can use up to 1024)

c)Attribute table clashes can be easily masked.

d)Can redraw a part of colors in middle screen, to get more than usually possible(requires 16 piksel empty space in the middle of screen...which can be masked using sprites, not used in emunes demo)

    -Other

a)Can scroll horizontally any portion of screen.

b)Obviously, can scroll screen vertically(but only the whole screen, not a portion)

c)Can make a limited animated screens (more complex with MMC3, not used in emunes demo)

d)Can make "Wavy" effect. Whole or a part of screen (horizontally only, not used in emunes demo)

e)The standard font have support for two languages: Polish and English. Can be expanded with another language. Also, I can use a custom font, if someone wishes.

I think this is all, I might forget a one or two effects, though.

So, If anyone want me to make something using the system, I require some grafics, a rough layout of screens which can be done in anything(like photoshop, gimp....MS Paint etc), music made in Famitracker(Unless one do not want music).
  • I would love to see something like this, I had an idea once of where you would play Tetris (this seems like a game almost every girl has experience with) at the end of the level she would get a message the further along she got the more obvious the message would be.
  • Oh, how ! To the top.
  • Awesome! I have an anniversary coming up in a few weeks and I would love to have a custom cart to give my wife. Also Canon sounds awesome.
  • I'd never spend more then $20.00 on a product like that, which will eventually just be discarded. It's the equivalent of a expensive card. That's just me though.
  • ^^Obviously you're not a golfer.

  • That's actually a pretty smooth idea Mr. Nut

If you had a wife/girlfriend that appreciates the thought, uniqueness, and effort to come up with a one of a kind gift I don't think they would throw it away.  Besides, who throws away NES games?  This is more like a collectors item, not a card.  My wife loves the one I made her a few years ago.

No, it's not a collectors item, I don't care how "limited" it is. I have useless stuff I've gotten from loved ones and while I appreciate the effort they made, sooner or later junk like that is forgotten or put away. It's not like a wedding ring, it's a nice thought that gets tucked away . Just because it's not in constant demand does not mean it's something that is in constant demand. I am sure they got a program that allows them to just set something like this in a matter or moments. People willing to splurge asainie amounts of money of this stuff is why it's expensive to begin with. When it's produced like this it lacks charatistics that would normally come from from doing it yourself.

It's not that easy to make something custom. You assume a lot and obviously aren't to knowledgeable about programming in assembly language. Just converting images to a format the NES can display can take a lot of time. Then there is the time and money spent on making custom labels, and assembling the cartridge.  Honestly, for the time it takes, it almost isn't worth the money to make one-off products like this.

However, if you program for a hobby, then this is just another way to hone your skills and do something really cool and unique for someone. I'm sorry if you lack the sentimentality that the NES has for the majority of people on this site. If you just came here to troll then congrats, you got me.  The one I made for my wife made her cry, and if something ever happened to me and she had to sell my collection she would NEVER get rid of it. Ever.

Why enter the brewery and spew crap like this? $30 isn't expensive, and like Brad says, it takes much more time and work than I doubt you could comprehend.
  • Hey, guys, don't support this project until Grind is done. Keep MRN focused!!!! GRIND!!!!!

(also, this looks pretty cool. grind.)
  • Looks pretty cool MRN, I like the concept.
  • It doesn't mayyer, this is from the same people who justify charging $200 for a flash cart that costs less then $50.00

To make. Enjoy your over pieces crap.
  • Screw it, I'm just foeing this guy. Congrats on being the first person I have ever blocked.
  • Thread crapping in a thread started by a moderator about his personal project. Great idea!

The base idea is good, but I think it needs more content. A variety of screen transitions, a couple options for simple sprite animations that run on each page (heart arrows, bday candles, etc), that kind of stuff. Really easy to program and would add lots.
  • Interesting ideas.

The transitions would be easy to add, just another look up table.

I am going to have to play around with the sprites. I'm always lazy with those!!
  • The label looks pretty neat! How is the general progress going? I've got some special events coming up in the next year or two, but did not know how far out this project is. Also, how much content do you forsee being needed to be supplied by the one ordering? Are you planning on using generic/stock images for most events? Anyways, excited to see where this goes.
  • Nice Demo! Great Concept also!

It's done.  By that, I mean that the one I made for my event is complete, functional, and ready to slap on a cart.

To make a custom one, I'd need a few things.  First, you can have up to 7 images that just use the entire tile set (except the bottom row).  I'd need your word screens that have up to 14 characters across and 14 rows organized as such, and you can have more or less as many screens as you want.  Then I'd need the order they'd go in.  And if you want something besides the hearts that move around, I'd need those sprites as well.

It's definitely doable, I just don't have the time (or patience) to make all this stuff for custom orders.
