PS4 vs WiiU is in a way just like Tim and Al from Home Improvement!

You guys remember the 90s sitcom Home Improvement? You know how Tim was always into stuff with MORE POWER? Well in light of the hiccups going on with the PS4 launch and the WiiU constantly being ridiculed as not being a "real" 8th gen console, I am reminded of (as Wilson liked to say) what Al said in one episode (to paraphrase):

Tim, there is a difference [between your PS4 with "more power" and the WiiU]. At the end of the day...our [WiiU] consoles (and its older consoles going all the way back to the good ol' NES) still work! ^_^

So I guess if PS4/X1 are the "Tims" of the 8th gen console wars, I guess the WiiU is the "Al"? And we all know how much everyone loves Al right?

  • Funny angle I'll give you that. I guess Tim would be flashy, grunting, and just going ridiculous while the Al system would be practical, low key, poked fun of, but works well and knows what it's doing?
  • Well the Wii U generated native 1080 @ 60fps...
  • Interesting...

(Insert "I don't think so, Tim" reference here)
  • So which system is Bob Vila?

Well if Tim is the PS4, then I guess the PS1/PS2 era is the Bob Vila.  Just like NES/SNES for Nintendo or GEN for Sega, there is no way either of those three came anywhere close again to capturing the magic of each of their second consoles.  In fact I like to call it the "third console jinx".

PS2 can do that too, what's your point? Let's see it do it with the poly count and textures of the PS4/720. It wouldn't touch 10FPS.

Still, more power...more 3rd party titles. That seals it. Even if Nintendo made an Animal Crossing every year, it would be hard to compete....okay I'd buy it then, but that's a dream.
  • I think Animal Crossing is destined to be like Mario Kart...strict limit of one per console/handheld.
  • Tool Time Girl Pam Anderson would be DS2. Nice piece of plastic that's fun to hold with both hands. Also easy on the eyes.

You do know she was only the Tool Time Girl for 1/4 of the series right?

  • First 2 seasons or so.
  • So isn't Heidi the REAL Tool Time Girl?
  • The real tool girl was Mrs. Binford if you remember. The first episode when Tim had the beard and Al was smooth faced?
  • That's correct.
  • I think it really kind of seems desperate to vindicate the Wii U by trying to compare it to PS4/X1 in light of "a console malfunction catastrophe." Wouldn't it seem smarter to wait 2 or 3 months and then jump on the bandwagon?
  • At least now that new Mario game is a real reason to buy.. It was a long time coming.

Reminds me more of that Gnomes movie from the 80s.. "Where's runt?" "Here I am maw!" hehe I wonder if anyone else's little brother was scarred for life because of that movie

Except for those bricked WiiU consoles from launch that were bricked by people shutting off the console during the massive firmware download.
  • Well they had it coming doing something dumb. You don't shut down any system updating its firmware during the middle of an update. That wasn't so much Nintendo's fault than the idiot pushing the power button and that is a computer age old issue from old PC motherboards to various parts, etc. You kill it in the middle of a write, you're screwed.

This is actually a comlete load of crap.   Long downloads get interupted.  Systems hang, power outages happen, routers fail, people think their system is hung (due to horribly developed interfaces that provide no reliable indicator) and reset them, etc.  Developing software that will permenantly die if it's interupted is just lousy development.  Get everything ready first, verify it's ready, any interuptions, restart at worst.. Then when everything is verified, warn the user do the update (never touching internet) actual firmware should be quick (if it's not, you are doing it wrong) let users know the progess while this is happening.. Take responsibility for any problems that happen during this process, never blame your users... It's not rocket science.
  • Great analogy!
  • In that case the PS4 has it's own show and the Wii U is just a supporting character.
  • So the car he worked on is the PS Vita?
  • Cradelit you're wrong, but that's ok. I've updated enough PCs over the years screwing with mobo and part firmware to know you don't shut something down on that kind of an update. When I see a console update, since they're wannabe computers in a sense these days I treat it the same...one and done, interrupt and play with fire. I never said Nintendo was needing to blame the users, they're so into positive customer service they wouldn't, but I'm laying the blame on the user end of things as I've seen my share of idiots stopping firmware updates for PCs having to come in for repairs/replacement parts.

What am I wrong about?  It's not possible to have a power outage?  It's not possible to write software properly (which I have personally done)?  Only possible interuption is user shutdown? don't be ridiculous.  Only a lousy dev blames the user they are supposed to have built their requirements around in the first place.  Users updating PC firmware are not users updating consoles.  Laptops are battery backed, servers UPC backed and are updated by admins, and firmware updates are downloaded ahead of time and are quick for PCs, they don't try to download a giant update and write it at the same time or something because thats error prone (moronic).  Bottom line, it's highly uncommon for a PC user to brick their system with a firmware update..  They aren't generally automated for one thing, users that are not comfortable updating firmware probably won't attempt to.

Edit:  I mean, you are likely going to be blaming an 8 year old for being 8 when you kinda should have known they would be 8 in the first place
  • I guess another way to look at it is that you know how the PS4/X1 makes such a big deal of all these online and/or digital downloadable games?  Well on that note, there's a big difference between those games and the ones on WiiU and all the previous consoles.  Five, ten or more years after the console's been retired...our games will still work!
