Light guns and CRT TV issues

I have a 36 inch Toshiba CRT TV 4:3 standard definition but with a flat screen not convex like CRT TV's were back when NES and SNES were new.

Can the flat screen be an issue for the light guns, I have the Konami Justifier and the Shooter Series Super Scope compatible light gun and both when calibrating are accurate, but as soon as you start playing the game they shoot all over the place unless your an inch from the screen. I usually sit approx 6 feet away.

  • I've heard that the flat screens have more issues than the curved glass screens, but I think the percentage of issues between the two styles was minimal. The light refraction from the glass could be effected with the flat screen. Have you tried using a curved crt screen with the same guns to rule out the guns?
  • Unfortunately I only have the one CRT TV right now.
  • Technically it should not be an issue. Light gun sensors do fade with time. Have you tried another light gun?

Duh, just noticed you calibrated these..Im stupid sometimes.

How are these calibrated? Seems very odd that it passes the test yet doesnt work during gameplay
  • I have no idea, maybe it was too bright in the room or something. I have had no problems for the past hour playing in the dark.
  • IIRC the SuperScope has trouble with flat panel CRTs.
  • Try new/different batteries. The IR signal won't be as strong if the batteries are weak.
  • Flat screens always have problems with light guns in my experience, even if they aren't HD TVs. You could try and adjust the brightness and contrast up a bit and see if that works.

If not, you have to grab another TV. You can buy them cheap at flea markets for anywhere from $5-$20.

Now if I could only use it as often as I like.

  • I don't know why a traditional light gun wouldn't work on a flat screen, I have never tried one but the technology of at least the zapper just doesn't seem like it should be a problem. The super scope won't work because of the fact that it relies on the scan lines of the curved screen, but just detecting light doesn't seem like it should have any troubles.
  • Ha ha. I had the same issue a while ago when building my arcade cabinet. The issue was as mentioned before lighting. A darker room fixed the problem.

The way theses guns work is that they have a photo diode in them (light receiver). So technically your gun doesn't shoot it receives. Scan lines or not, both screen methods put out light to the gun so that isn't the issue.

The reason light guns don't work on the modern TVs is SCALING not SCAN LINES. The new TVs will recieve the input signal and convert it to the scale of your TV causing a delay. This delay is enough to throw out the timing of hit registration the screen sends to the controller (the strange flash or something similar you get when you pull the trigger) meaning every shot will be a miss. A flat screen CRT should have no issues.
  • While on this thread, anyone else had problems with the superscope in lemmings 2? An Easter egg exists where you can shoot the lemmings in the game. I've tried 2 pal consoles, one with a region free controller mod one without, a fc twin, 2 different crt TVs, the superscope as well as the orange shooter series gun. All situations had very poor control of the crosshair, hit recognition was infrequent and I'm not really sure it's even registering the trigger pulls half the time.

Both guns work fine for all the other games ('Tin Star' the exception for the orange shooter series gun. I'm pretty sure that's normal though). Any ideas? Is it just my pal consoles/game. I'd love for someone to try it out on a super famicom or ntsc Super Nintendo with the appropriate carts and see if they have the same results.
