Know the original Leisure Suit Larry well? I need you.

I'm about 90% done with my Leisure Suit Larry NES port and I need some experts to run it through its paces, give me suggestions, etc, etc.

If you know the game well, and are interested, let me know.

This is not the place to tell me you want to test the game if you aren't familiar with the original.  That will come later.

Thanks in advance.

And respond with your knowledge of the game from 1-10, please!

  • I'm all you need brother
  • Ah, the days of the Tandy 1000.

So much fun when I was so young...
  • I'd love to lend a hand. I am a big fan of the series and own some of the original games. I even still have my Randy Computer.
  • I'll throw out an offer, but I will admit I didn't get into LSL until the series had kinda taken off.

I do still remember having to track down a passport for some illegal on a cruise ship. Why of all the tasks that's the one I remember, I couldn't tell ya!
  • Please respond with your knowledge of the game from 1-10 if you can.
  • I'm gonna say I have a 6/10 on LSL 1. I would have to hit up a couple of other references if you were gonna ask me what had changed from version to version, since the original's been remade like 4 times now.
  • If I had to pick a number I would say an 8 or 9. Its been a few years but I could play both side.by side.
  • Ahh memories. Back in the 90s I played the hell out of the VGA version of that game along with LSL6 as they were my favorites. I'd offer to help but it's a bit fuzzy, probably have to use a faq to remember finer/some details. Hope it works out well for you as that there is a classic and it's sad the NES only ended up with just KQ5.

Back in HS english I think 12th grade it was, friend of mine were stuck on a project having to make a comic to prove our knowledge of the reading and we had 'The Seafarer.'  To make a joke out of it, it starred Larry which I drew for it.  Little did we know the teacher was very familiar with the character, less known to us she had a sense of humor, and we got an A on it.
  • Hah, I stole this game off a school computer's hard drive in like 8th grade.

Played it for quite awhile, but I wouldn't say i'm fit for what you are looking for.

I too would have to refer to a faqs or reference for all the little tricks again.

    i'm probably only like a 2-3/10 :/

    free bump
  • Ahh the memories of asking for a condom at K-Mart in the game. I would help but I really don't remember much about the game, good luck though Khan.
  • I would say a strong "8" on the first one for sure.
  • The first one was definitely my favorite. I would be an 8 of 10. I can get every secret in the game and I also funded the remastered release done on kickstarter or indiegogo (can't remember which one they did it on). I have the LSL condom which should speak for itself ;-P

Overall, I'm happy to help in any way I can.
  • Ken sent me
  • I'm quite familiar with the original. It was one of the first games I played as a kid on Amiga 500, and nowadays I tend to play through it yearly. It's also my favorite of the series. In the past, I've also spent some time looking at the innards of the game in AGI Studio (or some other program I can't remember the name of right now).

I don't know every single secret of the top of my head, though, so I'm probably a 7/10. Anyway, I'm interested in helping out.

    Best response ever.

Thanks for the replies, guys.  I'll be adding some of you to the private thread just to give this game a little testing, to see if I am doing the game justice.

I also emailed Al Lowe just to see if I have his blessing on releasing this thing.  Let's keep our collective fingers crossed.

Yea Kevin, that would be great! I have a few doubts, since this is still a product they are making money from.
  • I'm willing to lend a hand, I've played this game more times I can remember, heck, I even did a marathon of 1-7 for the kickstarter campaign to get LSL: Reloaded funded. (I'm in the game because of this ^_^)

I second what was said, having Al Lowe's blessing would be awesome!

In response to your original question, I'd give myself a 6.5/10 for LSL1.  I might have rated myself higher in previous years, but like others have said, my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I have many fond memories of the game from my younger days.

How accurate are you trying to make the port anyways?  Are you planning on implementing the "age verification" questions they prompt you with in the original?

Stoked to hear you're working on the project again Khan.    Keep us all posted on the happenings - including if you get a reply from Mr. Lowe!

  • Haha, the age verification I find very difficult myself. A lot of them are US based, and before my time. We didn't learn any US history growing up. As for the graphics, I've been converting them from the original artwork to cooperate to the NES constraints. This can be quite challenging because of the limited tiles and colors, but so far I think I have maintained the original look and feel. Unfortunately you loose some of the details and fancy colors. Kevin had the Bar area finished before I started working on the project, but everything after that is stuff that I've done.
  • I won't have any age verification.
  • For me it's a 0/10. I've never played a LSL game... So I'd be the perfect n00b tester
  • I'm a HUGE fans of the first Leisure Suit Larry

I'm actually porting it to the Colecovision

If you need my help, hit me and it will be a pleasure for me to help you

    Knowledge of the game: 9/10

    Cheers!

    BTW: I'm retroillucid on AtariAge
  • Also, If you ever need scans from the original game, including the awesome napkin from the Leftys , let me know, I still have the original game and packaging right here
  • I remember there was a code that would put up a "boss screen" (a fake graph chart). It would be cool if the konami code activated that.

not a demand or anything, just a silly idea.
  • Well i thought I was a five. After playing for hours today...I'm definitely an 8. Kev is gonna get tired of me
  • I would say an 8. One of my high school friends growing up had a copy.
