Control stick mod for NES max controller

'Cause if you haven't, you need to!!

There is a great instructables on it (I think He might even be a member here) and it makes  using the controller FAR more enjoyable.  It actually responds really well to games like mega man and battle kid.

I also like the fact the stick doesn't really "move" persay like an analog stick.  just clicks in eight directions.

Have you done it?

Yeah the sanding to fit just right is a pain but totally doable. Isuggest once you get a perfect fit snap the stick shut and glue it closed. Mine popped open with serious use so I had to open it back up and glue it.

Yeah thats mine.  I can make one for you, but it is REALLY easy.

The sticks are like 3.00 for 4 on the Bay

    Here are the steps.

    1. Disassemble and clean the max controller (cleaning is not needed but recomended)

2.Take apart the dpad ring and clean (its 3 pieces)

    3. Loose the little "nipple" part

    4. Shave about 1/8"-1/4' off the new stick by rubbing it on sand paper (I used 150 grit).  It does take a little elbow grease.

    5. Keep test fitting the stick inbetween the 2 black dpad-rings, there is a specific way they join to one another.  You want the upper ring to *just* snap on.  The stick should be able to just rotate and have a smidgen of wiggle.

    6. Re-assemble and Viola`!

EDIT: look at the end of the ebay link before the "..........." lol
  • Sweet I may have to try that out. How much do you charge for one lol
  • Yup, I'm a member here
  • Wow. I just read through the instructables and it doesn't look that hard. I think I might try it but I need to find a max controller first. The good thing about this mod is that the sticks are sold in pairs on ebay so if you screw up on one you can try again on the other. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Well then this is the man to thank! Excellent write up, thank you for that. This is one of my favorite mods of all time.
  • Ive got a max here from back in the day new that never gets used, youre tempting me as that looks comfy to play with.
  • This went viral a couple of years ago here

    http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=22&threadid=52871

I don't usually get on board with the hype, but I did for fun. And once I did it, I never went back.
  • I may have to try this as well. The Max controller has the button layout I like, but I could never get used to the slider. Just wasn't precise.

I did a search but didn't find that thread. I searched for "max controller" though.
  • Neat. I don't know what color to pick! I like transparent but the red doesn't look like it matches too well even if it's supposed to.

I might try black...or solid red.

saw something on the other thread about sanding the stick at an angle so that it tilts a little toward you as opposed to pointing straight up. It looks like the tilted controller would be more comfortable. Should I sand the bottom of the stick flat, or try to do it at an angle

Its up to whatever feels best for you.  The angle might be more ergonomic, but It would be more difficult to do without some type of belt sander.  It can be done, be you will need a bunch of elbow grease and make sure you keep a very low angle consistent.

  • Now THIS is awesome. I'm absolutely going to give this a try when I get my hands on another NES MAX. Thank you for sharing this awesome info!
  • Finished mine last night. Really happy with how it plays!

Anyone who's curious, it's definitely worth it. Feels like a totally different controller.
  • I remember this thread

I have since switched to the dogbone as my main, because turbo is outlawed in the weekly competitions.
  • I did one for mine a year or so ago.. it's a HUGE improvement. Would Do Again
  • I've been wanting to for a long time now, I even have the parts already with me to do it - I just cannot, for the life of me, find a MAX to use for that. I have two untouched ones, but they are just too nice to mess with, I'd rather not modify those two. I've been looking for a decent one to mod for months now.

If it helps, the mod doesn't have to be permanent. The thumbstick just replaces the red thumb button. You could always put it back if you didn't like it.
  • I just got another controller (not messing up "my" NES Max controller) so I will want to try this mod. Doesn't seem too hard to do.
  • I did it after seeing your post, its awesome! Granted for some games I really can't use it but its freaking great otherwise! especially having a joystick and in my opinion the best turbos on any controller.

True, but I just don't really want to take them apart again lol. I'd like to just find one that I can mod and use and not worry about it lol.

  • Just so u guys know..yes this mod is very simple, and yes can be put back to original form..do not expect miracles from the mod..just because you have a joystick doesn't mean the controller will be perfect. The joystick swivels and diagonals can be a pain to achieve...but overall it is better than the disc..but not by much.
  • Your controller swivals? And you have problems with diagonal xdirections? Did you sand off to much.? Or maybe at the wrong angle? Mine is very tight and very precise, so much that I have never had either of these problems. Weird
