Question to the people who collect other things other than video games

Alright, so I've been wondering this forever.

In, say, comic book collecting, or baseball card collecting: Is there an established "community" like we have here. I'd imagine that there is, but what is it like? I've always been curious as to the extent of the community of other collecting hobbies.

I'd imagine that a lot of them (comic books, cards, etc...) have really big communites, almost too big that its hard to follow everything. You know how here (not just in video game collecting, but specifically NES collecting) everybody sort of knows everybody? What other things are like that?

Are there established members/collectors of certain things that have MASSIVE collections for things, that post on message boards. And if they do, lets get a link to some pics?

Is there like "ONE" big forum for these things, or is there multiple (NA, DP, AtariAge, rfgen, etc..)

I know, lots of questions, but I've always wanted to know...

  • All the guys into Games Workshop games hang out over at Bartertown. But that sort of collecting demands being part of a community since they are all multiplayer tabletop games.
  • I used to have a rather large star wars collection, a bunch of G1 transformers, started on GI-Joes, He-Man, now it's all pretty much gone

(trying to sell off a rather large SW lego collection at the moment)

as far as I know, the "big dogs" for sw stuff are on rebelscum.com

my buddy Joseph is a Huge sw bootleg collector over there, some people over there have mind boggling collections (prototypes, samples, molds, etc..)

now, i'm all over the place in the Nintendo world, gameboy systems, japanese gameboy games, nes, snes, virtual boy

resident evil games, silent hill games, GTA games

I still occasionally pick up little things here and there, I like alot of stuff
  • I collect water bottles. I must be completely insane.
  • For comics collecting, there are a few people who are known by a big chunk of the community. The guy that started this place, www.geppismuseum.com, also started Diamond Comics Distributor who is the company that every comic shop in the US (and maybe Canada) orders their comics through. The museum in the link has several copies of Action Comics #1 (first Superman story ever), along with several other rarities. Other than that, the only "names" in comics are several well-known shops in the big cities, but that's about it. The comics community is a much more local thing, and not too huge online that I'm aware of.

Thanks for the heads-up, I have some rare SW crap I got in junior high from a classmate. His dad worked at frito-lay, and they had these film still things they put in with chips, only in puerto rico as far as i know. I think they should be pretty rare, at least in the US? I'll find out i guess.

there's a couple of really big online comics forums actually.   The biggest are the forums on the cgc site.

    Yes, for sure.

for sure.   On the comics boards a lot of the guys have registry sets where they can show off exactly what issues of what key runs they have, in what graded condition.

In terms of non-registry stuff, my favorite thread on cgc is bangzoom's.   He started collecting comics, pulp, and comic art in the early/mid 1960's - part of the very first wave of collectors - and he is the rare guy that actually kept it all.   The most he ever paid for a comic book was fifty bucks for a superman #1!

I will get a link shortly.

  • there are pretty much the same Forum/community for most other sought after items, toys, comics, records and even boomboxes (ghettoblasters) which I have 7 of now and is starting to be my new obsession. I used to have large Star wars and Transformers collections, rebelscum is a big for SW stuff, I post there occasionally. Also if you know what megos are, the community and collectible mego universe is just as big if not bigger than Nintendo stuff. a friend of mine runs megomuseum.com the NA of mego stuff. So if anyone has any cool original Star wars items for sale or large boomboxes from the 80's I wants image

  • jumpman, here are a few of my favorite pics of bangzoom's from the first 25 of or so pages of that (extremely long) thread.

Action 13.   This is the 4th superman cover and I'm guessing would be mid 5 figures in this condition.  Part of a collection bought for $7.50 per book in the 1970s.

    0

All American 16 - 1st appearance of Green Lantern.   Easily 6 figures in this condition.   Also bought for $7.50

    0

Adventure 40 - 1st appearance of Sandman.   Another 6 figure book most likely.   Cost?  $7.50.

    0

Comics cabinet, featuring, among other things, Superman 1-5 and Batman 1-5.

    0

A run of Pep comics including the first appearance of Archie (#22).   Another five figure book bought for $7.50.

    0

Random five and six figure comics.

    0

Random five figure 'timely' comics (the precursor of marvel comics).

  • I collect baseball cards as well but have never looked for a community, doubt there could be anything like this one anyway. I've been thinking about selling my collection of Baseball cards to help fund my NES obsession.

EDIT: ^^^ that's a SICK comic book collection
  • Bronty - Funny, because I actually read the whole first 25 pages of that damn thread! It was a really cool read. It's interesting to read about these other hobbies. Saw your name in there a lot too image

Are the boomboxes worth anything? I come across those fairly frequently in my line of work.
  • Bronty, thank you for linking to that thread. I'm going to spend the next 5 hours reading it and checking out all the scans. I don't have the resources for collecting GA books, so it's really cool to check out the big collections when they're shared.

well some are yes, and it really depends on condition (as with anything) if its still working good condition etc.. I only look for large 1 peice boxes (meaning non detachable speakers) the best thing to do is note the make and Model # if you see one. most average boxes sell for $50-100 (for smal to med sizes) in working condition (radio and tape player) some can reach 300-500 for large sought after models

  • There's one Christmas light website that I know of that isn't absolute crap, and no message board. The site does feature some pictures donated from collections, but mine isn't one of them. Stupid obscure hobby.
  • when you going to post pictures of your XMAS light collection? Do you setup them all up every year?

I'll take some pics soon and post them.

And I honestly don't have enough house to put them all up, but it's definately a "Christmas Vacation" quality lightshow.

  • I collect vinyl records but its kinda lame on the forums because all of the really hard core audiophiles act like big dicks if you have a smaller collection then them. Most of them to buy in bulk its about how much they have over what they have sometimes. Comics I would have to agree is more of a local thing. Its very much support your local shop. I know in Denver Mile High Comics chain there does a lot to try and bring all the collectors in the city together. If you subscribe to their newsletter on their site its a really personal thing. Makes you feel apart of a family.
  • Oh, duh. I totally forgot about the CGC website. Yeah, I'm not even sure it's possible to start and find collections like that one anymore. Everyone and their grandma has been looking through old actics and trunks trying to find valuable comics.
