Do Everdrive Carts Work Well With Light Guns?
in The Brewery
If I got the NES, SNES, and Genesis Everdrive flash carts, could I use them to play light gun games? I found something that will 'dumb down' an HMDI signal, so that I can plug the RetroN 5 that I'm getting ASAP to the CRT TV in the basement. The reviews are saying that any of the controllers can be programed for any of the games, so if that works with light guns, I can use my old NES Zapper to play any SNES and Genesis light games that I can find ROMs of, once I can afford to buy the flash carts for those systems. There are a few copies of the Super Scope 6 cart for the SNES, so that would make for a good test cart, to see if the controller mapping works for light guns. Even if I had to buy the SNES and Genesis guns on eBay, they usually aren't that hard to find.

But to answer you initial question, the everdrive should work with lightguns, given you are using original hardware.
I have the Sega Light Phaser for Master System and my Everdrive MD has no problems playing Master System Games of the Genesis, though it seems that some games respond more acurately than others. The Light Phaser technology more closely resemble the Atari Light Pens, than the Nintendo Zapper (Light Gun). All of which require a Cathode Ray Tube television to operate. I prefer to use a tube tv to game on anyway due to some more modern tv's having lag and distortion issues.
The Nintendo Super Scope, if I'm not mistaken, uses similar technology to the Zapper. This would mean it would also require a CRT tv. As for the the flash cart, you'd have to compare the compatibility with the Super Scope games list and the consoles.
The Sega Menacer games SHOULD all work on the Everdrive, and the gun used a sensor connected to the player two controller port, meaning this MAY work on clone systems, though I believe the Everdrive itself will not. I could be mistaken. Since the gun uses a sensor bar rather that the screen image like the Wii or the Powerglove, it is not actually a light gun and MAY not need a CRT tv.
I'm sure a little research would go a long way, but If anyone wants to get all sciencey, this just boils down to four questions. Are the Menacer games supported by the Everdrive? Will the Everdrive run on clone systems like the Retron? Will the Retron support the Menacer's sensor bar? And does the Menacer require a CRT tv?
Video converters to CRT will not work, too much processing lag.
Retron5 will not work, adds frames of lag.
Flash carts will not work on Retron5, it's a software emulator.

The Powerpak won't run on any clone system that doesn't use the original Nintendo's 8-bit microprocessor produced by Ricoh based on a MOS Technology 6502 core. Some clone systems use what is called the NOAC or NES on a chip. That won't make the magic happen.
It not working has nothing to do with what model the CPU is or who it was produced by. The incompatibilities lie elsewhere.
