Do Everdrive Carts Work Well With Light Guns?

If I got the NES, SNES, and Genesis Everdrive flash carts, could I use them to play light gun games? I found something that will 'dumb down' an HMDI signal, so that I can plug the RetroN 5 that I'm getting ASAP to the CRT TV in the basement. The reviews are saying that any of the controllers can be programed for any of the games, so if that works with light guns, I can use my old NES Zapper to play any SNES and Genesis light games that I can find ROMs of, once I can afford to buy the flash carts for those systems. There are a few copies of the Super Scope 6 cart for the SNES, so that would make for a good test cart, to see if the controller mapping works for light guns. Even if I had to buy the SNES and Genesis guns on eBay, they usually aren't that hard to find.

  • I doubt the retron5 will ever work with a lightgun. Unless they release their own which simulates a mouse like what people use for mame arcades.

But to answer you initial question, the everdrive should work with lightguns, given you are using original hardware.
  • I figured as much for the everdrives and the Retron 3, but the Genesis guns and the Super Scope are impossible to find in the wild. They only thing out there that I can afford for SNES are guns for NES/SNES clone systems, and they only tend to work for the clone, and nothing else. I'm getting the converter for the HDMI hookup, when I can get a RetroN 5, so I'll test it out myself. It's easy enough to find the Mario/Duck Hunt cart, and like I said, there's a few Super Scope carts at my local gaming store.
  • I'm telling you. No lightgun will work with the Retron5. You would need a lightgun built like a Wii Remote with a sensor bar, from what I've read, hyperkin has no plans to make one.

  • Everdrive or not, the carts has nothing to do with the light guns. It is the TV that is the critical part. Lightguns won't work on a modern TV, they will only work on a CRT one.
  • You will also be disappointed when you find out your Everdrives will not work on your Retron5 either.
  • I haven't played with an Everdrive N8 yet, but I use the Powerpak on an AV modded toploader. (The Powerpak won't run on any clone system that doesn't use the original Motorola 6502). I can't imagine the Everdrive performing any differently other than maybe some mapper support issues on the weird stuff. I can even play Chiller with 2 Zappers.

I have the Sega Light Phaser for Master System and my Everdrive MD has no problems playing Master System Games of the Genesis, though it seems that some games respond more acurately than others. The Light Phaser technology more closely resemble the Atari Light Pens, than the Nintendo Zapper (Light Gun). All of which require a Cathode Ray Tube television to operate. I prefer to use a tube tv to game on anyway due to some more modern tv's having lag and distortion issues.

The Nintendo Super Scope, if I'm not mistaken, uses similar technology to the Zapper. This would mean it would also require a CRT tv. As for the the flash cart, you'd have to compare the compatibility with the Super Scope games list and the consoles.

The Sega Menacer games SHOULD all work on the Everdrive, and the gun used a sensor connected to the player two controller port, meaning this MAY work on clone systems, though I believe the Everdrive itself will not. I could be mistaken. Since the gun uses a sensor bar rather that the screen image like the Wii or the Powerglove, it is not actually a light gun and MAY not need a CRT tv.

I'm sure a little research would go a long way, but If anyone wants to get all sciencey, this just boils down to four questions. Are the Menacer games supported by the Everdrive? Will the Everdrive run on clone systems like the Retron? Will the Retron support the Menacer's sensor bar? And does the Menacer require a CRT tv?
  • None of original Famicom or NES consoles or their clones use the original Motorola 6502.
  • My mistake. The Powerpak won't run on any clone system that doesn't use the original Nintendo's 8-bit microprocessor produced by Ricoh based on a MOS Technology 6502 core. Some clone systems use what is called the NOAC or NES on a chip. That won't make the magic happen.
  • LCD/Plasma will not work, the Zapper light sensor will not trigger and too much input lag.

Video converters to CRT will not work, too much processing lag.

Retron5 will not work, adds frames of lag.

Flash carts will not work on Retron5, it's a software emulator.

It not working has nothing to do with what model the CPU is or who it was produced by. The incompatibilities lie elsewhere.
  • Yes, if you use an SD CRT TV.
