I believe this is the first death of a Season 1 character since Andrea at the end of Season 3.
Why? It happens in the comics, so no one can say they did not see it coming as many people believed it would be him anyways. If anything, people should be upset about Abraham as he was more involved with the group than Glenn was in the last season. You know, the whole faking of his death and he vanished for some episodes. Was it because of how graphic it was?
What a trip, crazy effects on glen , basically like the books
They basically "caught up" with the books with the negan storyline by killing both off.
Talking dead is hilarious , I'm a fan but I'm not gonna be all bummed out because of these characters haha
It's funny to me seeing the emotional talk about it hehe
I gotta read this months comic, catch up current WD events.
I dont get the whole "we'll get through this together!" bullcrap. Its a TV show for fuck sakes. Most of the people in the crowd look like they were just there because they like Norman Reedus.
I was proud that our sales associates didn't gush all over him the last time he was in the store (how unprofessional!)... that is until he made a purchase and one person stopped him to pose for a selfie. Of course, then the phones started getting passed around and people started swapping positions and texting the pictures to each other and it steam-rolled from there. Luckily he only had to head out the door when he was tired of it. I hope he wasn't planning to do more shopping.
FYI, Melissa McBride's dog is named Lincoln (Ichinisan lived in the same building for years).
What a fantastic opener, nearly exactly as expected from the bits n pieces that I've read prior. But the way they executed it, wow I loved it. I really thought Carl was losing a hand - poor kid!!!

I guess I should clarify that my wife isn't exactly rational when it comes to stuff like this. (And I'm also glad she doesn't read NA!) She said Glenn was her favorite character and we didn't see two deaths coming like that while we were watching. It was enough to be prepared for one, but not two.
I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I felt that the episode was 'meh' at best. While the production value was high, I feel the show has pretty much lost its way in terms of storytelling in the last 1.5-2 season. This episode just reinforced that for me.

Was complaining the whole time that they were wasting the episode on the one story detail (who got killed). The only subverted expectation was that it was two characters who were killed, but it was still a whole episode of that which otherwise left us where we started (with the group under Negan's control). Story did not progress much.

That was my main gripe as well. The show is more fixated on suspense and tension then it is on actually progressing the story. You know, the thing that drew us all in in the beginning? A prime example of this is the Glenn dumpster garbage (pun intended?) from last season. That entire "plot" was completely nonsensical if they were just going to kill him off now.
I also feel the show is past its prime, but I will continue to watch since it is free and I have nothing better to do at 9PM on a Sunday night. I think the show is still good, it was just almost perfect in some earlier seasons and set the bar pretty high.

This "opener" would have been far better as the finale to last season; minus a ton of the fluff and flashbacks (Even seeing it resolved I still feel that the cliffhanger was terrible storytelling and stupid)

Westworld on HBO.
Yes! Westworld is the best show on TV at the moment.

Imo should have had abrahams death blow at the end of the season. everyone would have felt satisfied and looking forward to whats next thinking its over.....then you start this season with the glenn shocker and this episode has the same effect and people would be surprised.

Thats what I thought. They would have blown everyone's mind if they killed Abe in the S6 finale, and Glenn in the S7 premiere. I felt that little feeling of letdown between their killings. After Abe got whacked, I thought "alright, they pussed out, no surprise", then as my nerves calmed down a bit, Negan turns around and smokes Glenn in the head, and my heart started racing again. If they had seperated those by a few months, it would have been unreal.
I'm still not disappointed by the premiere, even though most reviews are average for it.

yeah because showing the abraham death at the end of season 6 people wouldnt have felt like they could have been playing safe. The buildup pointless cliffhanger caused them to have to shock you in the opener. It really would have worked better.
I bought the first compendium of the graphic novel. It's pretty awesome, some major differences from the show. I really like it, theres no drama or bullshit, gets right to the point. I put it off for years and i'm glad I finally took the plunge.
I'm not sure about the theory that it would have been better with showing Abraham getting his head smash at the end of season 6. Everybody already knew 'someone' got his/her head smashed, that's already a shocking information (and the comic fans knew it anyway). Knowing that it is Abraham would have added little to it really, while leaving it at that created a whole bunch of speculations from the fans, which is something shows are trying to trigger a lot knowing how the interest in the show is kept alive on the internet between seasons. Everything is not just about the 'surprise' or whatever. I think the double death revealed in s07e01 was more efficient in portraying how 'wacko' and 'serious' Negan is as a super vilain. But to each their own really.

I hope you continue to read through all of the comics because you are in for some seriously good storytelling. The television series is a watered down, hyped up version of the comics that, while immensely popular, is by no means good television, so hopefully you can get into following the comics as they come out.

I plan on reading right up to the new stuff. The character development is much different. In the show, Shane was a major character and you really saw him go from a good guy into a lunatic. That happened a lot quicker in the book, he more or less just snapped. I think thats more just what the books wanted from that character, they aren't as concerned with ratings, more about the story.
Gotta say I feel bad that poor Dale didn't get his sex scene with Andrea before he died, haha.
Jeffrey DeMunn (Dale) and Laurie Holden (Andrea) were both Frank Darabont peeps, so they probably tried to get released from their contract once Frank got fired. The show just had Hershel, Bob and Sasha fill the roll those characters had in the comics.
At this point the show seems to be dragging on for no reason other than ratings. I mean I understand we needed to feel Rick's pain, his sense of hopelessness, but DAMN it's like they drag it out for no reason nowadays..
I miss the first 2 seasons where shit actually happened instead of drawn out BS
It seems to me that the show drags when they are padding it out to get from big comic beat to big comic beat. I highly recommend the comics for any of you who may feel like the show isn't quite what it ought to be.
I all but gave up on the show the last few seasons. I came back because I heard Negan was a real bad hombre and wanted to see what happened. I'm cautiously optimistic about the rest of the season, but I feel they'll drag it out to appeal to the fan base who watch for the drama and gratuitous shots of Norman Reedus.
More shit has happened then ever the last few seasons. Less and less filler imo
the show had no money the first 2 seasons.
Its not my favorite show on tv. There are better. But its not dragging along imo. Every time a show gets popular and goes beyond 3-4 seasons you get these cliche opinions people adopt because they heard someone else say it. There are episodes i dont like as much as others but the show isnt going downhill or dragging to me. It just is what it is.
Theres really only 2-3 points where the show got not as interesting. 3/4 of season 2 on the farm. How on earth can someone honestly believe that was a good point of the show. And i also didnt really care for the sickness at the prison beginning of season 4. Also didnt care for that beth hospital stuff.

I drove by that hospital a few times today. It's the closed down Newnan Hospital West location, not Grady Memorial, as the show implies. Ichinisan and I were born about a mile away at Newnan Hospital East and I live almost smack-dab in the middle of the two.
Yeah, it wasn't my favorite part of the show either.

They're also dragging things out because they have been fast approaching the end of the source material. They really breezed through the last third of it. The comics get surprisingly little done in the course of years because they only release a fraction of an episode's worth of content once a month. It's only now that we can consume it all at once that they seem to be that much faster paced. They really are in a sense when consumed in big chunks like the show's seasons are.

Well they managed to get 6 seasons out of the first 100 issues, and they still got another 60 issues to go... so I think they're pretty safe.

Not without more foot-dragging. Foot-dragging is the only reason it's taken as long as it has for the first 2/3rds and a big reason why they make so many multi-episode tangents and made a spinoff series. Tangent examples: Morgan regaining humanity/learning Akido, the Wolves, the hospital, the sickness, etc.
Also, consider that half of this season is already done and will fly by in two months. The other half is already in planning/pre-production. How much of the last third of the source material does that gobble up? I expect a lot more episodes wasted on one little thing, like last season's finale where they just kept hitting the same note over and over again ("Path is blocked. Let's go around.") until they finally accomplish the one crucial thing at the end (encounter with Negan).
Another way to look at it is that they have to stretch the last third of the source material from this point to get three more seasons and there will be very little new source material made in those two years. They've essentially already used a third of that for the current season, leaving them with only about two more seasons of material unless they slow down. They'll be lucky if the comic produces another half-season's worth in that time, so they need to implement austerity measures ASAP.

So Season 1 we are left still with
Rick
Carl
Morgan
Carol
Daryl
Maggie is the only character left from season 2. Shes lost everyone
If I were the group. Id look to just leave and go to some other state far away. There has to be a way to just grab some essentials and leave.
