They're also dragging things out because they have been fast approaching the end of the source material. They really breezed through the last third of it. The comics get surprisingly little done in the course of years because they only release a fraction of an episode's worth of content once a month. It's only now that we can consume it all at once that they seem to be that much faster paced. They really are in a sense when consumed in big chunks like the show's seasons are.
Well they managed to get 6 seasons out of the first 100 issues, and they still got another 60 issues to go... so I think they're pretty safe.
Not without more foot-dragging. Foot-dragging is the only reason it's taken as long as it has for the first 2/3rds and a big reason why they make so many multi-episode tangents and made a spinoff series. Tangent examples: Morgan regaining humanity/learning Akido, the Wolves, the hospital, the sickness, etc.
Also, consider that half of this season is already done and will fly by in two months. The other half is already in planning/pre-production. How much of the last third of the source material does that gobble up? I expect a lot more episodes wasted on one little thing, like last season's finale where they just kept hitting the same note over and over again ("Path is blocked. Let's go around.") until they finally accomplish the one crucial thing at the end (encounter with Negan).
Another way to look at it is that they have to stretch the last third of the source material from this point to get three more seasons and there will be very little new source material made in those two years. They've essentially already used a third of that for the current season, leaving them with only about two more seasons of material unless they slow down. They'll be lucky if the comic produces another half-season's worth in that time, so they need to implement austerity measures ASAP.
I'm sure there'll be plenty of foot dragging. Also, Robert Kirkman can write a lot faster than Charlie Adlard can draw, so who knows how far into the future he's scripted/plotted it out.

This is very true. They could also adopt a truncated season model much like Game of Thrones will do next year or like Breaking Bad did in the final season (spread out over two years). I'd actually prefer that over watering it down with filler episodes or episodes that drag on over one crucial detail.
I just finished the first compendium tonight, what an awesome series. I'm gonna order the next one so I can keep going without stopping, it's quite different than the show, so it certainly keeps me hooked.

How often do the comics come out, monthly? Once I get caught up i'm not sure if I want to get the comics as they come out, or just get the paperback volumes.

They are monthly. I'll admit that it's fun to follow it that way and have something new to read each month but st the same time I'd rather read a big chunk at once as the trade paperbacks collect six issues apiece. When I read an individual issue I'm done in like ten minutes tops, so after paying four dollars I feel ripped off. The trades can be found awfully cheap so that's a better deal I'd say, plus they sit better on your shelf if that's where you'd rather keep them.

Yeah I think so. I read these things pretty fast, so i'd rather get a nice big chunk of content rather than 1 issue at a time.
Slow change of pace episode. I guess viewers were given a break after last week.
So, will the Savior group die due to eating pigs fed with walkers? I do not remember if this has happened in the show before. You know, people eating walker fed animals.
Definitely a change of pace episode, it's nice finally being introduced to King Ezekiel and Shiva. Very interesting that they have deals worked out with the saviors and that they wouldn't fight back even when being assaulted...seems to be right up Morgan's alley. Feeding them the infected pigs is very interesting, I also wonder how that will play out. I wasn't thrilled with meeting Ezekiel and then essentially learning he's an "acting" King in the first episode - but I guess this shows off his character overall very well. A friend of mine and I were having this conversation a few months ago, and what we thought they would do is have the first half of this season cover issues 100-114, then the second half of the season would be cover the All Out War story, which ran from 115-126. The next season would pick up at 127, and maybe get trhough to the Whisperer's War which started at #156. So you are looking at at least another 2 and a half seasons to get caught up to where they are now, which would create another 2 years or so of content. I don't think they are going to catch up anytime soon.

what issue number is the comic up to?
Three compendiums of 48 issues each and a matter of months since then.
Definitely a change of pace episode, it's nice finally being introduced to King Ezekiel and Shiva. Very interesting that they have deals worked out with the saviors and that they wouldn't fight back even when being assaulted...seems to be right up Morgan's alley. I do like how both Carol and Ezekiel could see past each others BS immediately.
Yep, the exhange with the saviors was interesting.

He's biding his time while recruiting the kind of people who can help fight them when the time is right. Giving them pigs that are full of rot was just meant to show that he hates them too but isn't willing to challenge them in a way that would put his people in danger.
I'm kinda confused about the acting king versus real king thing. He never claimed to be a real king before he asserted himself with them, and if they agree that he is king then, well, I guess he's king. The over-doing it thing is because he was a theater performer but not really relevant to "acting" like a king. He's just pushing kingly tropes/stereotypes/speaking mannerisms to project an idea/vision, which seems to work with his people.
I'm almost finished compendium 3. I can't put the fucking books down, i'll be disappointed when I get caught up. The war between Rick's group and the Saviors was insane.

Ah, that is the worst part of getting into the comic book. But hey, you may dig this if you are a Chappelle fan -

Im done with the show. I dont like the over drama and bullshit. It's also so far off the books. I wanted to get back into it this season with Negan, but I dont really like how he's portrayed in the show.

I could do without the commercials. My only complaint. At one point a commercial break ended at like the 43 minute mark and another one started up at the 47 minute mark. And then the show came back for like 4-5 minutes for a 3rd commercial break. Its just ridiculous. It takes you out of the show. Have longer commercials and longer segments of show. It gets out of control.

I don't even bother with the show, but I feel obligated to point out that the video I provided was for an SNL sketch with Dave Chappelle. Heheh.
I'm just about over the show also. It hasn't been all that good for the past couple of seasons. I'm really tired of Neegan turning in to a cliche villan. I mean really?
I highly recommend reading the comics to any of you who do not already that feel the show is letting you down. You get everything, without being watered down or padded out to fit mainstream television. It's utterly fantastic.

Feeding them the infected pigs is very interesting, I also wonder how that will play out. I wasn't thrilled with meeting Ezekiel and then essentially learning he's an "acting" King in the first episode - but I guess this shows off his character overall very well. I do like how both Carol and Ezekiel could see past each others BS immediately.
Yep, the exhange with the saviors was interesting.
Clearly Carol and Ezekiel are going to hook up.

Definitely over done.
So so ep for me
Talking dead is on and they are commenting on 'Judith' reveal
I'm thinking ' duh no shit it's not your kid. >.>
Dont know what you peeps are talking about

I don't even bother with the show, but I feel obligated to point out that the video I provided was for an SNL sketch with Dave Chappelle. Heheh.
