  • msnbc seems to think that GM is going under completely.... can't really argue with that statement considering all of the shit that's been happening
  • American car companies just can't compete anymore, at least in the domestic markets. They seem to do fine in Latin America. Anyway, they have been getting government subsidies for years, and also have not turned profits in years. Obviously, the Japanese, Koreans, and Germans are much more efficient at making cars. We need to divert those resources elsewhere because we do not have a comparative economic advantage in auto manufacture.

gave are you a fellow economist???
  • No car company is making much money right now, so American auto makers aren't alone in their struggle.

But with GM worth less than they were pre-Great Depression...I think the writing is on the wall.

Word. I just graduated this summer with my BA in economics.

  • lol only in america can I have a BS (bachelor of science) in marketing, and you get a BA (bachelor of arts) in economics. Seems like the letters should be the other way around!
  • ^^^ Dan, I think it's pretty evident from the current mess that economists have treated this as more of an art than a science for decades.

While there is a great statistical component to what goes on...there is a huge psychological factor that you can't always count on.

It is with good reason that 80% of day traders lose money to the fickle masses.
  • At my uni there are options to take it for a BS or BA. The BS comes from the college of business and the BA from the college of liberal arts/sciences. The BS requires taking "business core classes" and the BA has a typical liberal arts agenda. I don't think economics is a science, because there is really nothing exact about economics. It's a lot of predicting and trying to guess how people will behave. And marketing is almost all psychology too, so I think a BA is more warranted there. Then again, maybe my school is just weird, my old roommate said he was only one of 5 people (out of a 25,000 student university) seeking a BS in chemistry, everyone else is getting a BA in chem.

But I know from talking to my professors that once you get into grad studies in economics, it becomes more of a science. I was told multiple times that if I wanted to pursue grad studies in econ, I would be better off being a math or engeneering undergrad since econ grad school is so heavy on math and crazy shit like 3d graphs.
  • When I was at Tech, there were quite a few financial groups that were recruiting engineering grad students as analysts. The research background and analytical training are highly sought after.
  • LoL has GM ever not been on the edge of collapse? Seems like they've been in this situation for the past 50 years
