Terranigma repro menu freeze?

Edit: It was the SNES! Different SNES = no graphics glitch and no freezing.

As title says, I have Terranigma repros (PAL version -> NTSC patch -> Font Fix patch) running on an INL board and on a TSOP chip, and both have a graphical glitch that will freeze the game sometimes.

In the "box" menu in-game, when I select one of the doors along the top (3: item, weapon, armor) the "zoom in" effect is gitched and sometimes freezes. The gitch is not present when I run the file used to create boards on an Emu (BSNES/Higan in accuracy mode) and the original un-patched Japanese ROM (Tenchi Sozou or something) also produces this graphics glitch when burnt to a TSOP and played in my SNES.

One thing I do notice..the graphical glitch results in more slowdown on the INL board version I am playing compared to the TSOP verion. I also haven't been able to "force a freeze" on the TSOP version yet despite 50+ attemps, whereas my INL version will sometimes freeze the first time I select a door in the menu. It is usually the "armor" door, it seems.

In all case, the graphics freeze and the music keeps playing.

Has anyone else encountered this? All the other "fancy graphics" in the game display fine: the landscape scenes, cut scenes, etc. It seems to just be the "rotating square zoom in" effect that is the transition between menu doors.

Cheers,

ndhl

  • Hm. I have a Terranigma repro on an INL board with the NTSC patch but no Font Fix patch. When I get home I'll boot it up and see if the same happens to me.
  • Hm, have you tried it without the font fix patch?

I just spent 10 minutes trying to get the menu to freeze and I couldn't. I think it's probably the Front Fix patch that's messing you up. You might also want to reflash the board with a different rom just in case.

I haven't tried the PAL -> NTSC version w/o the font fix patch yet, no, but I will shortly. I haven't yet because I have tried the original Japanese version (hash/DAT OK) as well on a TSOP and it also has the same graphical glitch, but doesn't freeze. My old roommate reported his copy (same file) seems to work fine, he tried to glitch it as per my instructions, and he says he didn't even notice a graphics failure, and so of course no freezing at all. That being the case, I am trying to find another SNES I have stashed away to see if there is a wonky chip in current one or something and just for the process of elimination.

    Thanks for the replies folks!
