What is the difference between Dr. Robotnick & Dr. Eggman???

Besides Dr. Robotnick is freakin' sweet and Dr. Eggman is the stupidest piece of shit name ever...Seriously, we all grew up knowing Dr. Robotnick as Dr. Robotnick...now all of a sudden in every new game he appears in, he is Eggman??? Who is this Eggman and what has he done with our Robotnick?!!!
