The Best 2 Player NES Games??

Hey guys. Just curoous what do you guys consider to be some of the BEST and most FUN NES Games??

For instance we already know these for sure>

Caveman Games

Contra

Super C

North and South

Bubble Bobble

But what are some others that are kinda unknown?

Comments

  • Are you talking co-op or versus? For my part, I'll say that Micro Machines, aside from being the best unlicensed game ever, has an insanely fun versus mode.
  • Super C

    Contra

    Heavy Barrel

    Jackal

    Battletoads

Those are my favs for 2 player action.

  • Contra gets my vote as the all-time best 2 player game. With 30 lives each, what more could you ask for?

Ring King is also damn fun with 2 players. And for some reason, me and my brother a lot of fun playing Dusty Diamond Softball...go figure

Oh, and you can't forget Ikari Warriors!
  • I can't believe that no one has mentioned Double Dragon II. The Double Dragon series is classic Nintendo... but I agree with Doc, Micro Machines is THE best unlicensed game and is SO much fun with two player. Also, NGD, Battletoads is one of my favorites! To list:

    Contra

    Battletoads

    Micro Machines

    Double Dragon II

    TMNT II: The Arcade Game

    Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers
  • awesome im gonna have to check out some of these. ive never really played heavy barrel or micro machines. Might bust em out tonight with one of my oldskool buddies. Ive been playing rc pro am 2, and dusty diamonds alot. those games are great too!
  • I think Jackal and Heavy Barrel are 2 of the most overlooked titles in the NES library to be honest. I have beat them both 100 times and they still bring me back, esp on 2 player.

  • Apart from whats already been mentioned i would like to add Snow Bros and Snake Rattle N Roll image
  • It seems that Dr. Mario always gets the most play at my old school game nights.

And with the caveat that my collection skews towards older games and isn't all that large, people seem to also enjoy playing:

    Balloon Fight

    Ice Hockey

    Double Dribble

    Anticipation

    Rush 'n Attack

    Ikari Warriors

We also like to trade off playing lives of good one player games like Castlevania or Super Mario Bros.

  • Oh, I forgot, Little League Baseball. It's the one of the only games that my wife and I will play together on the NES.

Yeah, I do that a lot too. When we were kids we had a saying: "Man by man, level by level." As soon as you died or passed a level, you passed the controller on.

  • I also vote for the three Ikari Warriors games...unlimited continues so you don't have to worry about playing with a newbie image

Also, as far as versus games, I always found Eliminator Boat Duel to be a fun two-player game...only shame is at some point after 10 or so different races it goes to "Game Over." I never really understood why it did that (maybe we were meant to beat some estimated time or something?).
  • TMNT 2: The Arcade Game was a great 2 player game. If there was ever a game that should have been made for the 4-player adapter, this was it. image

One of the best arcade to console ports imo.

Has anybody said Super Dodgeball? Wasn't River City Ransom kick-ass with 2 people?
  • i'll also go with contra, jackal, and ikari warriors. i can't believe no one said pro wrestling. there is nothing better than talking trash while biting into someones head as the amazon. maybe its just me, but i love that game.

Bah, how could I forget? Yes, definitely Pro Wrestling. We used to play this head to head all the time when we were younger.

Although I recommended Ikari Warriors above, I will say that it's glitchy as hell. It really sucks when one of the players gets stuck behind the background for an entire level. Does anybody know how to get out of this state without finishing the level?

  • Hmmm.....

    Rampart
    SuperSprint
    Mario Bros.
    Bases Loaded
    California Games

These are ones I played when I was younger with my older brother.
  • dr mario its really only fun with 2 players
  • Tecmo Super Bowl
  • contra and jackal are awesome, but i really love baseball games for 2 players, my favs include baseball simulator 1000 (you get cool specials), bad news baseball, and dusty diamonds. Blades of steel is another classic, so much fun, and the fight are amazing, lol.

I agree on this point, these 2 games are extremely fun as 2 player, i would say on top of everyone else':

    -Silk Worm
    -River City Ransom
    -Super off Road
    -Danny Sullivans Indy Heat

the last 2 are just fun with some friends, even more so if you play loser has to drink. Especially Danny Sullivans Indy Heat where you can run over the opposing players pit crew so he is forced to continue racing with no fuel!image
  • Dr Mario is the most played game over here lately....River City Ransom and Bubble Bobble would get more playtime if I had more people that appreciated them around image

I did get my brother in law to play the Three Stooges with me a few weeks back.  Watching him run to get that radio and hit a pole every 2 seconds makes the game completely worthwhile image
  • Yeah, Dr.Mario got a lot of play around here for a good stretch. My wife and her girlfriends would play eachother and the loser would have to take a shot of vodka.

They moved onto the N64 4 player mode too. I would come home from work or the gym and find drunk chicks yelling at eachother and almost breaking out in fights because they would get so mad at eachother.

But there was still that sweet music in the background behind all the yelling image

  • I agree with most other people with a few exceptions:

TMNT 2 is an okay NES game, but TMNT 3 is practically the same game, except a lot cleaner play and more fun.  If you were going to play TMNT 2, go ahead and put it away and play TMNT 3.

Dr. Mario for the NES is also quite unplayable on the NES due to the limited Pixels.  The Super Nintendo version is far superior.

Also, be sure to add Snow Brothers (Bubble Bobble is great, Snow Brothers is not quite as good, but still it is similar and a great game...much better than Bubble Bobble 2 (a rare game, but gameboy port to the NES adds to it's slightly distorted play), Battletoads Double Dragon (for all you Battletoads fans that wanted a sequel - if you have ever played Battletoads, you know that it was one of the greatest games ever made).

Giving props to anyone that mentioned the following:

    Bubble Bobble
    Contra
    Super C
    Battletoads
    North vs. South
    Balloon Fight

Also, I am a bit curious has anyone played Balloon Fight or Mario Bros. (not Super Mario Brothers) FIGHT.  You play to see who can kill off each other first.  It's fun.

  • These would be at the top of my list:
    Contra
    Mario Bros.
    Jackal
    Tecmo Bowl
    Dodgeball

    Others worth pointing out:
    Guerilla War
    Super Spike V-Ball
    TMNT 2
    Monopoly
    Golf
    M.U.L.E.
