Retron 3 and Reproduction Games

I have seen some speak of the Retron 5 NOT being compatible but I was wonder if anyone knows if the Retron 3 plays most repros or homebrews

Comments

  • Retron 3 plays them all fine so I assume Retron 5 will as well
  • Yep all my Nes Snes & Genesis repros/homebrews works great on my Retron 3!
  • I thought that was the whole point of repros was to play them on real hardware.
  • Yes that is the idea of them, but to assume the Retron 5 will run them when the 3 does is not a good idea. Retron 3 is a system on a chip. Retron 5 is an emulator that checks a pool of stored data to match up with the data a cartridge has so it can tell the system to run it right. If a bootleg (repro) isn't 'pure' to a real release it probably won't fire up, just as home brews won't work unless the maker submits it to the to add to the registry of games.
  • I had a problem with Wanpaku Graffiti on the 2nd level with a R3. Other than that, I had no problem.
  • Playing on a retron or any famiclone I have noticed Kid Dracula using a adapter or not for some reason on the first level when you start climbing upwards there's a section of floor that you fall though and cannot jump over no matter what you do, but oddly enough if I play it on my toaster nes that same section is able to be crossed over.
  • I have a Retron 3, and I've had a couple games that have given me trouble.

Piko's 4-in-1 SNES game won't do anything, but Classic Kong and 4 other repros will.

Super NESnake 2 gives me a very unique video output I haven't seen before that makes me think the Retron doesn't like whatever chips are used in that board. 8bit Xmas and about 10 other NES homebrews/repros work fine.

I haven't found a Genesis game that doesn't run yet, but Genesis repros are a little harder to find.
  • It's the way Piko's cart works, it's a multicart so the unit can read the menu part of the ROM as it's own thing, but it can't pull the game from that menu when it asks to boot something to play so it gets lost.
  • Most work, though I've never played anything extensively on the Retron 3 to comment on glitches/sound. It's basically just a testing unit for games I buy.

Thats weird, I showcase the Multicart on expos etc on Retron 3s (3 of them), may be you got a bad one?

  • It's possible. Everything else seems to work though. I don't particularly want to buy original hardware to confirm that, since the point of the Retron 3 was largely to not have to buy separate consoles. Enough of it works that I dont want to bother with replacing it. The 4-in-1 cart just has to sit on my shelf until I can hang out with a friend with a real SNES or the whole console dies and gets replaced.
