Dead Wavebird

Hey everyone,

not sure if this is gonna be answearable, since theres a bit of varibles, but maybe (and hopefully) I can get some tips to try

I have a Gamecube Wavebird that will not powerr up at all. I did notice that the battery connector plate (that only connects the the batteryies together, not the ones connected to the controllers mainboard.) was totally corroted. I removed this plate and cleaned it very well with a wire brush. I put it all back to gether, switched it on, and still no power light or connection to the receiver.

I've tried a few things like jumping the swtich with a wire to see if it's a bad switch, no luck. I also meassured the battery terminals that connect to the main board and get the 3v I should, when switched on, it goes to almost 0v, which is the same on my working controller.I dont see any burns, corrosion, or damage on the boards anywhere, What else could/should I take a look at?

Thanks in Advance!!

  • Weirdly enough, I left the remote in the on position over night at my work when I went home (didn't realize I did) when I came in this morning, the power LED was on! neat!

But when I turned it off and back on, nothing again, So I'll leave it on again and see what happens. The controller has 1 capacitor on it, I'll replace it and see if that helps too. (If its not the capacitor, I don't think I can fix it with those micro resistors and circuits. Maybe I'll reflow the MX chip on it as well, this usually fixes GB carts)
  • How does the rest of the board look? If the connectors were corroded badly its either from water or battery acid. Wonder if the rest of the board was effected if it was water. If you see any corrosion on the board for the controller try cleaning it with alcohol and a tooth brush. Also see if you can trace power though the controller using a multimeter so you an locate any possible shorts.
  • The rest of the board was spotless, not a spec of dust or dirt, So I replaced the capacitor and reflowed all the solder connections. Which brought it back to life for a few minutes, but when i removed the batteries and re-inserted them, nothing ago.. but I did find a fix, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=221430079250 woo! cheap beat up controllers! Missing the parts I already have (receiver and battery door) I'll just swap the boards and be done, and still have another controller and then some for parts.
  • Something similar happened to me years ago, must be a problem with them in general.
