GameBoy Games just randomly stopped working

So I do a lot of cartridge cleaning at my place, and a friend of mine gave me 3 pokemon games that just randomly stopped working altogether. The system boots them as if there is no problems but then nothing comes up past the gameboy logo screen. I changed the batteries on them all about a year ago, as well as about a dozen othergameboy games for her, and they all worked and tested then, but now they will not work. Everythg is clean on all of them and all the connections are solid. Battery is still strong but even with it disconnected they still dont work.

Any ideas?

  • I've had a few Game Boy games do some funky stuff similar to this. I was able to revive them by carefully re-soldering all of the joints I saw on the cartridge board.
  • Yea you probably just need to open them up and carefully look at the chip connections and traces.

I had to do this with a copy of Pokemon Blue.
  • There probably was at some point a very bad man playing these, and he didn't pick Bulbasaur.
  • I literally just reflowed all the joints on a Pokemon yellow. it wasn't working before, it works now.
  • Hey I am having the same problem with my games and I am new to soldering. I was wondering what exactly do I do to the joints with the soldering iron? Do I unsolder one of the joints then use a solder sucker and then make a new one using wire and do that for each of the joints ?
