  • Out of curiosity I tested out Qwak for the GBA, unknown cart, it works, but the battery save does not for the high scores. Same problem hits my bootleg(ahem repro) of DQM Caravan Hearts so it's useless since it's an RPG.

Been talking to the Retron Tech, and have finally completed testing the Retron 5 to the means that I'm capable.

Overall repro compatibility is very good since the last update adding mapper 0-4. Most games are still unrecognized, but will play regardless. I just hope it won't mess with any of my saves since they're not recognized.

However, two very important games will simply not run at all. My NES repro of Mr. Gimmick (bought from Timewalk Games) and my SNES repro of BS Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets (bought from ShopFlashback.com) will simply not run whatsoever. Both are amazing games and very popular repros at that.

Outside of that, I think most of the highly popular repros are close to being covered. Gowever it would be simply amazing if mapper support could be added for at least those two titles. If needed I'll do whatever I can to help.

  • The NES game would likely be a mapper issue, maybe it's particular about something that isn't being caught. The SNES game though it didn't use mappers, perhaps it not detecting LOROM or HIROM properly or something with it not having a CRC entry, but the diagnostics panel would detect that on a test build.
  • The Mr Gimmick Repro uses the Sunsoft mapper. I forget what mapper number it is, but it's definitely not 0-4.

There's two different versions of this ROM, one with expansion audio (translated JP) and one without (NTSC Proto). Batman: Return of the Joker is the only suitable US donor cart that uses this mapper but Mr Gimmick is popular enough that there are homebrew repro boards made specifically for this game. Obviously the ones with the expansion audio are a little more expensive and require the PowerPak mod. I still have the original RetroUSB one which is officially a collector's item now.
  • I've been linked to the beta firmware updates by the Retron Tech guy, and would like to help through diagnostics and test builds as well. It's a pity when compatibility for a few key titles in my library won't fly, especially when looking to replace the clutter space of original hardware.

Any work you're doing is very much appreciated by everyone, I'm confident.
  • I just got the Violinist of Hamlin repro, put it in the retron and it showed unknown cart as usual and I selected to play anyway but the retron goes into an infininte loop where it will load the cart, reach 100% and start the process all over again. Kind of sucks. I was looking forward to playing it. Has it happened to anyone with repro carts? Can someone let the Retron Tech know about this.
  • Got a copy of Getsu Fuuma den from the nes dump,(http://www.thenesdump.com/games/translated/getsu.htm)

It gives me the "No Cart Inserted" message. Thanks to everyone testing out and finding out which repros work!
  • Anyone know if Battle Kid 2 now works with Tanooki's special build?

I personally doubt it as it uses custom RetroUSB mapper. Tanooki's updates can be found here:

  • Just got a few new repros and I have update the google doc.

    I got two from http://www.newtype-game.com/

    Castlevania Dracula X (SNES) works

    Metal Warriors (SNES) works

I got three from SavePointVG here on NA

    Earthbound Zero (NES) works

Secret of Mana 2 (SNES) works

Chrono Trigger (SNES) cimson echoes does not work, the system doesn't even try to recognize the cart.
  • now that we have root, at least for the crc games you can probably just look at assets\gameinfo_db in the retron apk

    the files look something like:

001A4CE0;02;01;01;00;00;00;NESA Audio Player - Little Nemo Sample

    001EEB8E;10;20;42;00;00;02;Joy Mech Fight

    00388B83;02;01;01;00;00;02;Gyrodine

    003C9E19;01;01;01;00;00;00;Manhole

    00433475;02;01;01;00;00;02;Hammer Bros. v0.50beta

    00550A2C;01;01;01;00;00;02;Nuts & Milk

haven't quite figured out the data format yet, but I know the crc doesn't match bootgod(I think someone speculated that only the first 8k would make sense for the crc, which would make sense but I haven't verified)
  • The CRC will be the last 8KB of CPU space when the cart starts, which is typically the last 8KB of PRG in a .nes file. It is a CRC32 but may also be inverted. There will also be a CRC for the whole PRG, or maybe for the whole PRG+CHR. Could take a production cart with CHR ROM and cut one of the address/data chip lines to test.
  • Picked up Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril and can't get it working "Unknown Cartridge" and a gray screen when I try to play. I've seen in a few places that this game is compatible, any idea what the problem could be (I'm on version 1.6)? Also anyone have any luck with Ninja Gaiden 3, that's another one that just will not play.
  • Ninja Gaidan III uses a TLROM-03 board, which is a very popular MMC3 mapper chip. If the Retron5 is using the auto-detect mapper 0-4 algorithm, then NGIII should boot up without any difficulty. Have you tried cleaning your carts?

Not sure about Battle Kid but if it uses a custom mapper like Study Hall, Xmas '13, or Battle Kid 2, it most assuredly won't work.
  • All the homebrews listed by Stardust don't work on my Retron 5. I'm on 1.5.

Because those three games all use a custom RetroUSB UN-ROM-512 PCB. Hyperkin could add support but I bet they won't do it.

  • I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Battle Kid uses a pretty basic mapper and not a custom mapper. Supposedly v1.4 added the mapper 0-4 so maybe Ninja Gaiden does just needs a good cleaning.
  • Yes, Wily Wars works!  And good to know Secret of Mana 2 works as well.

Do you know if Battle Kid 1 and 2 work, or if Japanese GBA games would work?

Edit:  In particular, Rhythm Tengoku and Darius R.  I'll have to test them myself soon.
  • Looks like at least some versions of battle kid should work(though I don't have either to try yet):

    C7AEB230;10;00;20;00;00;00;Battle Kid 2 - Mountain of Torment

BEB04546;10;00;20;00;00;00;Battle Kid - Fortress of Peril

I would add too that Nomolos(v1.00) which didn't work for me on 1.1 seems to work now(build 1594) although it still says unknown cart
  • I have Battle Kid - Fortress of Peril and tested it on my RetroN 5. Attached is a photo of it working showing game title and all. Dragon Leap also works but it's titled "Unknown Cartridge".

    I am on v1.6(build 1594)
  • The new Battle Kid 1 doesn't work yet
  • It's official. There is a PRG1 of Battle Kid. From the RetroUSB site:

"Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril v1.100 cart with high quality label (SIV-BK-GBL)"

Any of you gurus out there who own the 1.1 version wanna open up your carts to see if it uses the new flash style RetroUSB mapper, or the older EPROM ReproPak?
  • just tried action53function16volumeOne again on build 1599 (2.0 beta 1) and still a no-go.

on the r5 it just gets a grey screen(unknown cart). it's dumping enough of the rom that nestopia will show the title screen(145kb) but then it just crashes (don't know if nestopia normally should support action 53? but fceux just black screened)

    homebrew mapper.

  • I got a repro hack of Super Metroid Redesign.  It glitches out on a standard SNES near the beginning but it works like a champ on my Retron 5....

That's because the ROM wasn't tested properly on real hardware. Retron5 is for all purposes and intents, an emulator. I have a Ballz 3D cart that I removed the DSP1b chip from, and it crashes after the loading screen on a real SNES. I'd bet my bottom dollar the Retron5 emu will play it just fine though.
  • It this thread still active? Stupid question.

A friend of mine recently got a Retron 5 as a gift. I told him it wouldn't play the home-brew games I wrote (TGUN, Dragon Leap, Dragon Feet). However, when we tried it the games did play. It loads the game, does not recognize the title, then pops up a warning screen that basically says 'do you still want to play?', and if you pick "yes" the game plays. These are all NROM games. Didn't have any other home-brews to try out. Is this a new feature they added or has it always been there?
  • It will never support the RetroUSB mapper, or INL, or other homebrew boards. That alone makes it worthless to me.

Always been there.  I get the same message with some prototypes and they work typically

  • kynrek, I tested Earthbound Uncut the other day and it didn't play. I actually came here hoping for some advice, maybe an SD card patch or something.
