Comments

  • Why not make one now? I know of four off the top of my head:

    Athletic World

    Flying Dragon

    Gun*Smoke

    The Untouchables
  • Metroid

I'll edit my first post. Post more if you know any.
  • This sort of goes hand-in-hand with the -1 box variations:

I know some are missing (ie, Blades of Steel), but maybe we can use this thread to get an updated list of what needs to be added still.

    -Dain
  • What I really meant was games where the artwork on the box is completely different. I wasn't really counting games where they slap a contest sticker on it or something like that.

I added Blades of Steel and both Zeldas, even though the artwork is the same, they change it enough for me to consider it different.
  • Hollywood Squares (white box, black box)

  • punch out vs tyson's punch out

  • lol Im glad i dont collect varaitions
  • Wayne Gretzky Hockey
  • Tiger-Heli has 2 different boxes
  • If you count the Tiger-Heli version, then you'd have to count the Star Voyager version as well (both have an all-black box and both have a gradient black to gray).

I have a feeling these aren't the types of variations Nick is wanting, but I think major changes (like Hollywood Squares) should be included.
  • Yes, I was looking for a list of major boxart variations. Games with different boxart I will collect 1 of each. BTW, Dain, do you have a picture of the different Hollywood Squares boxart? It doesn't look like it's listed in the NA database...
  • I have both Tiger Heli versions, and I'm pretty sure the title itself was different on the box...I'll have to double check when I get home...

I posted a pick in this thread here:

    Scroll down...

And I wouldn't count the Tiger-Heli; the only real difference is the presence of a small white line around the letters in one of the two versions.

I'm going for major variants only as well Nick (no seal variants, screw variants, or other insignificant stuff) so I'll see if I can dig up my personal list. It's on my HD somewheres...
  • Okay, I found it. Here's my list of the games that I personally collect more than one box for, along with the explanation as to why (when necessary):

    -Athletic World

    -Gun.Smoke

    -Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll

    -Hollywood Squares

-Bases Loaded (questionable, I know, but I count it: blue trim vs orange trim)

    -Blades of Steel

-Mario is Missing (two entirely different box backs)

    -Legend of Zelda

    -Metroid

    -Zelda II: Adventure of Link

    -Untouchables

    -Gauntlet

-Pac-man (3: Licensed, Unlicensed Standard, and Unlicensed 10th anniversary box)

    -RBI Baseball

    -Wayne Gretzky Hockey

    -King of Kings

    Did I miss any???
  • If you're mentioning RBI Baseball and Gauntlet, for completeness Tetris belongs on the list..

also Namco pac-man is a fourth
  • Awesome, that's just about the exact list I was trying to make. Thanks, Morbis. You can also consider adding:

-Super Mario Bros. 3 (Different backs)

Why Tetris? There's no licensed Tengen version, so it's really two entirely different games by two publishers. As for Pac-Man, yeah it's pretty much the same code (unlike Namco's Ms. Pac-Man), but still *different* publishers. I wasn't counting games with the same title (and sometimes same code) that were released by different publishers, or else you would've been seeing a lot more entries: Impossible Mission II, all the Indiana Jones, etc, etc). My list above is only the instances where I collect more than one box for a title notwithstanding the fact that it's the same game by the same publisher.

As for Mario 3: I thought it was just different screenshots on the back (which I wouldn't count). Did they change any of the game description as well?

Finally, you might want to add TMNT II Nick; it's got a pizza promo and non-promo version. I personally don't count it and that's why it's not on my list, but you may feel otherwise.

    Missed that, eh Basil image

Anyway, I KNEW Tiger Heli had something different with the title...The black seal version (solid black) has a white border on the title lettering. The white seal (grey to black) does NOT have the border. I would count it for the color difference if you're counting shit like Hollywood Squares where it's the same picture with a different base color.

TMNT II's promo isn't a sticker; the pizza offer is part of the box art image (Just like Castlevania III's contest promo). I was just mentioning it since it's a pretty big blemish on the first run of TMNT II's box art, so some "major" variant collector's may wish to count it and include it on their personal list.
  • Thank you for posting that list.
  • I just got a goal box that has a big logo on it that is different than the regular box, it is a -1 box as well.
