Games in the up position vs. down position

I thought I'd ask about this...  I have a fair amount of carts and it seems that more of them work better when they are not pushed down into the NES than others.  I know that the "correct" procedure is to push them down, but I tend to not have great results or any results with some games when they're pushed down.  I'm just curious is this is indeed normal or what?

  • When my toaster was new, they ONLY worked pushed down.  But after I adjusted the pins a few years ago, many of them only work while up.

The big thing is that the game just needs to have full contact with all of the pins on the connector.
  • IMHO, if your NES works in the up position, or works *better* in the up position, there is something seriously wrong with your ZIF connector. I know a ton of people swear by all the pin-bending and tampering and such, but all a blinky NES really needs is a good old fashioned cleaning. A standard NES cart should slide in and out of the slot like butter (hence the term ZIF), without having a death grip on the cart. There are my two cents image
  • I would just but a top loader and save yourself the hassle, they always work.

  • Is a ZIF the same as a 72 pin or is this something else?
  • ZIF = Zero Insertion Force, which is the type of connector that the standard NES has.
  • Ooh. That totally needs to be the title of a Homebrew Shmup. image

Or maybe a fourth Panesian...nyuk nyuk
  • After the adjustment it gets a pretty solid grip on some games, but cleaning is not a catch all solution for the ZIF connection.  The whole flaw with that design is that the lower set of pins fatigue and deform from use, and eventaully cannot make contact no matter how clean the deck is.

It's what happened to my NES about 13 years ago, and I thought it was dead.  No amount of cleaning worked.  So I left it in it's box until about 5 years ago I found the article about how to fix the pin connector and it's worked ever since.
