Xbox Live Orange Controller - Value?

image

According to my research, these were given out as gifts to XBL beta testers, along with an orange memory card. But that is mostly speculation so if anyone knows for certain where this controller came from, please let me know. I'm more interested in what it's worth, tho, as I can't find an auction anywhere for it.

  • That is really cool!
  • I'm not sure it was ever found it where it originated. Rumors it's a 3rd part shell and others believe a contest giveaway, however, still lacks documentation to prove such claim.

It's rare and there are people who are going to be interested in it, myself included.
  • Thanks for the link but I've read that page already. I am almost positive this is an official controller. It has a part #, a serial # and says "Xbox Controller S" on the back on a sticker like you would find on a regular Xbox controller. The serial # is 008090774A, which is different from the regular S Controller. It also has symbols etched into the plastic like a regular Xbox controller does (FC CE VCI and a check mark). There's another sticker next to the barcode one that says R31264 and has a circle with an arrow thru the middle, again similar to other Xbox controllers. Someone would have gone to some serious lengths to do all that.
  • I believe it's official as well, which is why I want it.
  • At this point, I'm trying to determine value because I have someone that is very interested in trading for it. He recently came across one of those orange Xboxes from the article you linked to, except his has the Halo logo on the front. He contacted the person that made the system, guy worked for M$ and they had produced a few different color shells as test models. I believe he stated that four were made in orange and were given away to friends or employees, and one person wanted the Halo logo stuck on there (like the green Halo one, except orange). So he's attempting to get the controller from me since he has been contacted by a collector with fairly deep pockets looking to get the system from him and the controller to go along with it (even tho they are definitely NOT a matching pair).

If he ends up not wanting it, it will be available, but I need to find out what a good asking price would be.
  • My buddy got an orange memory card the same color as the controller for beta testing live on either the og Xbox or 360, I can't remember. It was an og Xbox memory card though.
  • This was part of the beta testers kit. Not sure if it was press only or all beta testers but it was for sure sent out by Microsoft, not a 3rd party product.

Thank you for verifying that! I'd read as much elsewhere but wanted to be sure.

Anyone know what something like this might be worth? Any Xbox collectors want to chime in on what they'd pay for it? I'm not selling it at the moment, but I'd like to try to gauge its value.

Many Xbox items took a big dip after the system died out. Some things are making a slow but steady recovery but there is room to move. Unless you see a recent sale the price would be hard to gauge at this point. Honestly unless you get a killer offer, I think this is something you should hold on to for a little bit.

  • I'm just curious as far as what someone might bid on this if it was at auction. I don't plan to auction it off, but I'd like to at least try to gauge its value, ya know? I'm trying to trade it, and I don't want to be too far off the mark one way or the other.
  • Put in on ebay with a high bin/best offer and see what kind of interest you get.
  • Yeah I guess I could but that's sort of teasing since I'm not really looking to sell it.
  • whoopdy do.

Put it up, figure a price out, get back to me.

  • It is difficult to price out something like this since they don't ever hit the market. Sometimes the best you can do is ask for an offer and accept it if you're happy with it.

Its pretty well understood by now that's what those listings are. You might get a few whiners but your not going to get much flack for it. Hopefully you get a couple serious offers and you can report back with your findings.

If things fall thru with the fellow collector I'm working on a trade with, I'll probably do that just to see what people are willing to spend on it. I've told a few people I'm looking for $300 in trade, and I had one member on here tell me in a PM that he paid $150 for one, but knows someone who paid $350. I'm definitely interested in finding out the actual value of it, at the same time, I'm looking to trade it for something rare. I have money and would rather keep something this rare if I don't get something equally rare/cool in exchange.

tl;dr - it's likely worth around $300. If I end up taking your advice, tho, I'll report back on my findings.
  • I ended up getting offered $400 on Ebay for it, so I went ahead and took it. Auction was up less than a day. The buyer also sent me several messages regarding past sales, indicating that it has sold for $200, $300, $300, $175, $175, $500 and $200. He seemed genuinely disappointed to have missed out on earlier auctions, and since it didn't really seem like I'd be getting more than $400 for the controller, I went ahead and took his offer.

DAMN! Nice job dude. I would have sold it for $400 in a heart beat.
