Two Games I remember playing as a kid BUT
First game: I am pretty sure it was on NES and played very similar to Legend of Zelda. Go in or start in castles, collect keys unlock doors, fight enemies. Like a mix between Zelda and Bomberman?
Second game: Sega Genesis I believe. Had halloween enemies, I remember a pumpkin boss of some sort. Reminded me of Castlevania in play style. Everytime I see 'Monster Party' or 'Pocket Monsters?' I instantly think that's it but it's not. I am pretty sure it is either SNES or Genesis but leaning towards Genesis.
Any help would be appreciated, it's been bugging me for years!!!

Crystalis and decap attack? I'm probably way off.
Crystalis looks close but I think I remember levels being in the clouds? I don't remember I was 5 when my dad rented it, and we played it constantly. decap attack I don't think either because I remember the game being fairly serious

In what way was it a mix between Zelda and Bomberman?
A little more description would be useful, since the "Bomberman" part of the description sounds pretty strange.

These are always my favorite kinds of threads.
Mine too, learn about all kinds of cool stuff.
The first game sounds like Tower of Druaga.

The NES game might be Arkista's Ring?
That's what I was thinking too. Good game, gets boring fast though. No clue on the genesis game, though. I did a quick google search, but it seems aside from this thread, the games have already been mentioned (we know how you got those answers! )
As for the second game, the only thing that popped in my head based of the titles you said is Pocky and Rocky, but it plays nothing like Castlevania.
The Genesis game had a Castlevania vibe with different kind of bosses that seemed to be Halloween themed. I remember you played as various characters I believe and it wasn't splatter house! I thought it might have been ghouls and ghosts but it doesn't match the vibe I felt.

Sounds like Startropics for NES. Had a similar formula of dungeon exploring as Zelda, (as well as the same display of hearts) and was on a grid like Bomberman. It also had overworld sections, so when you look up a video make sure to see the dungeon section to confirm if that's the game or not.
Wow, that is a leap, IMO, since Zelda is on a grid I certainly wouldn't have thought THAT was the Bomberman-connection in his first description.
There aren't keys in that game, either.
Nice guess, though, since it sounds like what he was looking for.

yea the keys threw me too. And I also agree, these threads are awesome.
The "Bomberman" mash-up is what I still want a better explanation for

Made sense to me, but I'm more than a little biased. First console demo I did like in 2004ish was going to be a mash-up of Zelda and Bomberman
But then I actually got a real job and never had time to finish it. Was thinking of starting it back up now that I'm back to gaming\collecting, when that dang dra600n had to go and introduce me to a nice BASIC compiler for the Genesis.

How does Bomberman fit into Star Tropics in a way that isn't already covered by the Zelda-like description?

Nope I know it's not that.

Was it 8 Eyes?
Could it have been an import? Although it doesn't play like Castlevania, Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti has a Halloween theme and a pumpkin boss.
