If you hosted your own NWC...

Basically, this is for a "create your own NWC"

What games would you use and what requirements for each game (i.e. getting the 50 coins in SMB1 is a requirement).  Also, what time limit and would you limit it to 3 games?  I think points are necessary for all games used, so don't pick any no point games.  The final game should be one that doesn't normally end until you die.

I don't have time to think out what games I'd use as I'm going back to work, but I'd be interested to see what you folks would pick.

One game I would do, however is:

Mega Man 1
Task:  Defeat Cut Man.  You get 99 lives like SMB1.  Your score will be multiplied by something.

  • That's a tough one. I personally think having Rad Racer in the NWC was pretty lame -- it's the same thing every time from what I can tell. I think they should have put in a Pro Wrestling where you get more points for beating the Great Puma quickly. Or maybe MTPO.
  • I don't think Rad Racer was that bad of a choice. It makes sense to have a racing game -- maybe there was a better one out at the time. I also like the diversity of the NWC. SMB is a given and Tetris is a cool way to end it because you can just keep playing until time's up. As for RR, it changes only slightly. Sometimes the cars are more aggressive but the track seems to be the same.

Anyway, this is a really neat question, Sivak. I'm thinking about it...
  • By the way, it can be any NES game post 1990 too.  I think I have an answer for my own Q now:  A good challenge would be to start it with Mega Man, then Ghosts 'n Goblins, and end it with City Connection or something.

    Game 1:  Mega Man
Goal:  Beat Cut Man's stage and Cut Man.  Cutman is always valued at 100,000 points (they randomize it in regular MM1)
    Score bonus:  2X

    Game 2:  Ghosts 'n Goblins
    Goal:  Beat level 1
    Score bonus:  10X

    Game 3:  City Connection
    Goal:  Get them points!
Score bonus:  50X maybe.  The point system isn't quite as high, but you can play for a lengthy session if you're good.

Time limit:  Maybe 8 minutes as those stages can take a while and would reward those who get to City Connection.

It's just my thoughts on how my little contest may work.
  • Color A Dinosaur - (self explanitory)

MT Punch Out - Beat Mike Tyson

    Qix - Get high score

You get 10 minutes to do everything in my made up NWC competition!
  • I like this topic.  Hope there will be more contributions.

    Game 1

The Legend of Zelda: Kill 40 enemies (no points involved, but the faster you do it, the faster you move onto the next game)

    Game 2

Mike Tyson's Punch Out: Defeat Soda Popinski.  If this was for an actual NWC, Glass Joe would have to be used, so that the unexperienced players still have a fair shot.  Also, the conversations with Doc in the corner would be removed for this version.

    Multiply points x2

    Game 3
Excitebike: Complete 1 of the races (maybe Race 2).  I'd have to play it to determine which race is the most fun, but something other than the first race.

    Multiply points x5

Game 4 - Tetris: Mode B.  Start on Level 0, Height 5, and each time you complete the necessary 25 (or is it 30) lines, your Level raises and you start over.
    Multiply points x10

    Optional Game (Honorable Mention)

Contra: most points starting at level 1.  Contra was chosen, because I was trying to pick some of the biggest classic games.  Metroid doesn't involved points, so Contra had to be used.

  • I don't recall Excitebike having points, but rather a "best time" system.
  • I suppose that's true.  Either a point system would have to be made based on the time (which would be very easy), or substitue level 1 of Contra in there.
  • I finally took the time to think about this...most people are right that MTPO's gotta be in there.

    Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

    Knockout The Boxers

    (SandMan and MachoMan/regular game timer/decisions allowed/score normal)

    Life Force

    Beat The Level

    (Level 2/just beat it/score x10)

    Snake Rattle N Roll

    Eat Pibblebats

    (Level 5/no timer/score x50)

    7-8 mins.

Don't know about the time; sounds about right. You've gotta end with something where you can rack up points, and the different colors and speeds of the flying pibbleys are perfect.
  • Been thinking on this for a while now. I think I have my ideal 3

Metriod -- defeat mother brain and get to your ship, infinite life and missles (just time)

Contra -- beat level 1, start with spread (score x 5)

Dr Mario -- high score till time is out, level start 15 (score x 10)

Would be a pretty challenging contest for sure. Would prob run about 9-10 mins though cause Metroid would eat up some clock.

  • Couple weeks ago I did Zelda contests at my place, there was:

    1. beat zelda 1 fastest (~1.5 hours was best)

    2. get farthest in 30 mins without picking up first sword

    3. first to 255 coins, first to burn something, first to bomb something

    4. start at random position, find a certain level the fastest (surprise was second quest)

Doesn't really fit in the NWC format but was still good for playing and watching. Of course had 2 NES systems side by side

For Metroid, where would you start?  Tourian?
  • In the boss room I would say. Start outside the door leading into where Mother Brain actually is. So you would have to get to her then, defeat her and get out in a hurry.

  • Looking over the replies the games should be mainstream titles everyone knows and they should be ones where you can complete the task without owning the game. Games like Metroid while great games aren't ones your mother would pick up and play with a glitch.

SMB is a great 1st game. The player must pick between screwing around and earning points or finishing up quick as possible. Its Nintendos flagship title and it works great here. If I had to pick another I'd have to go with Donkey Kong. Everyone knows it and can play it.

A long custom Excitebike lap would be better than Rad Racer and the more I think about it I wonder why they didn't. This is the only game in the bunch I don't think was the best choice.

Tetris really is a great choice for last. If I had to pick one I might go with Mrs Pacman where the 4 ghost combo would replace the 4 line tetris.
  • i personally like the nwc cart just the way it is..
  • I still have to think about this a little, but I will say that RR should go and there could be something better or comparable to Mario. I love tetris, but its been givin me troubles.
