How many of you considered selling your collection with the Release of the Powerpack?

This might sorta be the "secret thought" of a few of us here, and was just wondering if anyone is feeling that way. I have to say in THE FIRST time in my 4 years of collecting, this is the only time i have ever considered selling everything. I mean with this cart its like having every game to play at ur finger tips, and even easier to play than the real thing lol. Dont know if i go through with it but was just curious to see what anyone thinks. I got into all this because i wanted to play the old classic games. Just to play really. Then i became interested in getting every game just because id like to play and check em out on real hardware. Now ya can on one cart lol.? And man i have a pretty huge collection that might collect dust if i get a powerpack. hmmmmmmm pondering. any thoughts....>

  • You will regret it, don't do it!! (early dibs on boxes image ) No way I would sale my stuff, I know I would just kick myself for years to come if I did.

  • yeah, no way I'd sell. If I am able to get one of the power packs I'd use it to play games, but I'd still want to collect. For me playing is fun, but collecting is the main reason I do it.
  • true but im starting to realize without spending tons of money finding the boxes and manuals for every game isnt possible. at least with a low budget lol. Now what really kept the collecting train rolling was the chance to get a new game to play that i never played, and that was awesome. Now i got em all besides the 4 crazy rares. And the only thing that made me want to keep em is because i play em, but now you can get every game on one cart and lay em just like the real thing for 150 bucks lol. Same thig in my theory, minus the hassle of cleaning the game, switching the game etc. It seems like at this moment the only excitement for me is getting a box or manual i dont have, which honestly isnt that thrilling lol. Look at a box for a second, slide it on a shelf, and be happy your down to needing 204 boxes instead of 205 lol. eh i dunno know jason, as i was telling you in AIM, might just need to take a break a little before i do anything crazy hehe

by the way burdger you still have the "first years momentum" and still have more and more games to get that youve prolly never played. ive been at this for almost 5 years now and have all the games ive ever wanted to play, but i remeber thinking everyone who sold off was crazy, but now my thoughts on it all seems different than they used too.?
  • Not even a moments consideration!
  • I think you are at a natural impasse. When I was working on my first collection, I was at about 400 games. One day I sat down and looked at what I had accumulated and was for a minute shocked at how much money I had spent. This was when I was getting ready to move (and subsequently when the collection went MIA). For a minute I felt that I had made a mistake buying all that I had and that maybe the money could have had a better use, but then the collection was gone. Was it the movers? friends helping the move? I dont know. That whole time period was extremely hectic and I will never know what happened. In any event, I started collecting over again from scratch, and havent looked back. Im at exactly 150 games, and this time around I regret buying the games again that I already owned (which is most of them unfortunately) but I havent let that sour me too much on the hobby. I have also come across some great finds that kinda balance the situation out.
In short, think twice before any hasty decisions.
  • OMG!!  It hasd to be the movers that stole your stuff!!

I'm not anywhere near my "first years momentum." I've been collecting for about 5 years or so myself. I've just been much more active since coming to NA. For the most part I've just been taking my time to find better deals on items I want or need, and I've played most of the games that I don't have.
  • We seem to have that affect on people, myself included image
  • Anybody here can easily get a dreamcast or an xbox with 10000 ROMs on it, but it's not the same as collecting. Gaming and collecting games are two different hobbies. I don't own a PowerPak but even if I got one, I would not consider selling the collection.
  • I said that to Parpunk last night on AIM Nick. I also said ROM's have been out for years and with the USB contorllers it really isn't any different than playing a NES anymore. Yeah you don't have to fight the games with the system or push the power button but to me if you are using the controller you are playing NES. When you reach a crossroads only you can decided what to do my friend.

  • I dont think anyone at this board buys NES games for the sole purpose to play them. I'd say most of us collect because its cool to have the original on the shelf. If you sell your collection you wont be able to have the "i got the original" feeling if you know what i mean.

I dont own the PowerPak yet (i will most likely get one since its a really cool device), but eventho you play on original NES hardware i dont think it will give you the same nostalgic feeling as sliding in the original game. Thats also one reason why i'm keeping my collection.

So.. my answer is no, my collection will stay, even as a PowerPak owner or not image
  • I got my Power Pak the other day and quickly put some games I dont have on a CF card. My collection still rests under my bed as it always has I play some of my games but mostly the stuff I played as a kid. My collection and my playing are two different entities. I will still collect, however I doubt I will play many of the originals anymore now I have the Power Pak, they are simply there for me to say look I have over 200 NES games and counting.
  • For me, this is a non-issue. There something about owning the carts that makes it more enjoyable for me. That, and I enjoy collecting variations, cataloging new things, etc. If I sold off my collection, I doubt I'd keep this site open!
  • Hmm, so a lot of you don't even buy the games to play them but just to own the original, huh? You're all starting to sound like a bunch of dirty sealed game collectors image
  • Don't call me that nasty name image
    dirty sealed game collectors
I still do play my games, but not as much as I like. I do collect more than I play though that is for sure.

  • We all do. It's because we have to bust our nuts at work to pay for everything. Except NGD, he's just lazy.
  • I have a job interview on the 6th thank you image I have to cause my unemployment runs out the first week of August. Been a good run though, I feel great image

  • collecting is a hobby, u dont want to give it up...
  • hey guys thanks for the input, yea i thought about it today and kinda dont know what i was thinking last night lol. My thoughts of it today seem totally different, and as of now i wouldnt even consider selling anything. I think i was in a mood yesterday cause i got shafted on some deals at the flea market. (guy showed up with 300 NES games for $2.00 each, and the freakin old man dealer bought 50 of the best ones before i got there) And i dont know what he got and it was bugging me, and making me feel discouraged about all this lol. But i asked the seller and he said he didnt have any CIB games so that made me feel better lol :-) But anyways guys thanks for the tips, and im not gonna be selling anything anytime soon. And i doubt i will buy a powerpack since i have the real games and know ho to make repros too. Thanks again everyone :-)
  • I think of it in a oppsite way I have all the games so no need for the power pac . unless maybe you can down load unreleased games.. can you do that
  • You can indeed, what do you think is on my powerpak image That plus all the hacks and repro roms and you have a whole new set of games to play.

    ~~NGD
  • Indeed, you can definitely play ROM hacks on the PowerPak. Like, for example, this great hack.
  • can anyone tell me what this power pack is and where do u get it?
  • guess i need to get one

It's a cartridge where you can customize your own multi-cart. You can put whatever nes ROMs you want onto it (from your computer) and then play the cart on your NES. It can be purchased from www.retrousb.com but they're sold out of them currently.
  • dam thats sweet i may pick one of those up. is there anywhere on-line where i can get rom's?
  • Hey Guys Im very happy to report that after some serious debating i decided theres no way in the world that i will be selling my collection. i honestly dont know what i was thinking, kinda just got burnt out on buying. took about a 2 week break of buying anything, and now my online store has made some cash and kinda got a good second wind. Ahhh man feels good to be back in the game after a break. :-)

So anyways thanks again guys for all the good advice, seems all i needed was a little break from buying lol.
  • It's understandable bro -- I think all of us at some point ask ourselves why we do what we do, and what's the point of it all. I know I have before, and it all comes back to just enjoying it. I sold off my NTSC collection around 5 years ago, but was smart enough to keep most of the rare items that were difficult to obtain (save for a few items, that I still kick myself for selling). For me, selling the collection was a temporary way out of a financial crisis (I lost my job), but I quickly got back on track and started collecting again.

I'm glad to hear that you've decided not to sell your collection -- I know that most people who get to that point typically do. Good to have ya back!

Good decision, never take action before giving it a lot of thought, or else you will regret it for years to come, kinda how I regret selling all my original NES stuff from when I was a kid, but I needed money at the time.
  • Parpunk wouldn't know what to do with all the empty wall space if he sold out! LOL... But if he did ever decide to sell anything I'm sure he would do what my quote below says RIGHT?! hehe...
