NES only showing black and white, no color.

Hey guy.

Just got a NES from Craig's list and it wasn't working. I opened it up, cleaned the pin connector and the connector on the motherboard. Now it's working with any games, but there is no color. I've tried it on a few tvs, both types of connections. Always black and white. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Pretty obvious question, but are you by any chance playing on a black and white TV? Or does your TV have a black and white mode? Perhaps try it on a different TV? Just seeing if its the console or the TV, first troubleshooting steps.
  • I tried it on 3 different color tvs. Its something with NES. I can plug a different NES in and it works perfectly, yet the other NES only shows black and white.

  • PAL or NTSC NES?
  • I would adjust the trimmer cap to see if that will fix your problem.

Its the green cap next to the expansion port.

Its best to have the system on when doing it to see if color will come back.

Give it a shot. the pot allows for adjustments for the Chroma carrier, if it deviates too much the TV will lose color and be black and white. I think

  • I tried adjusting the timmer cap, it didnt seem to have any effect. I tried turning it both was while the system was on and nothing...
  • try putting oil in the pot and spin it around. ive had this issue with a snes and that fix it.

Don't use oil. Never use oil to clean contacts in electronics. It may fix the issue temporarily but over time will make the problem much worse. Use a contact cleaner which is designed for this purpose. WD-40 is made for mechanical parts, not electronics.

Remember these machines are nearly 30 years old, treat them delicately and they may last another 30 years or more.

i stopped using wd-40 years ago as it dryed out.  i use ultra lite oil by Hob E lube.  havent had an issue with it yet.  i did that snes about 4 years ago and i still work fine now. ive also used it on pots on atari pattle controllers about 7 years back still no issues today.

but since your concerned about it  what contact cleaner do you reccomend?

    ok thank for the info
  • I was testing some new to me games today and left The Lone Ranger running on one of my front loaders while I cleaned some other games. When I came back everything was black and white. I thought I had found some Easter egg that made things look like the old B&W TV show, but it continued doing it even in different games. When I load SMB3 I see some crazy scrambled graphics and get a weird color shifting light show as things quickly shift to B&W and stabilize.

I put The Lone Ranger in a top loader and played a while and I keep seeing strange jumps and distortions on the screen about once every 10 minutes. Is it possible that this game fried my other NES when I left it running for over an hour?

LOL! Noticed the salvaged Game Genie connector. What kind of project was this?

You left it running too long and broke my NES!

Really need to put up a YouTube video to show what it's doing. It looks freaky.

  • It wasn't running any longer than it would have been had I sat down to play instead. As for the video: Done.

Well, it looks freakier with The Lone Ranger. Instead of being scrambled at the start there is an uneven blob of color covering most of the screen and it seems to melt off, changing colors as it slides toward the bottom. Very quickly it leaves only black and white.
  • Here's the weird melting effect:

  • I can't be the only one that thinks that looks dope as hell
  • I bet the subcarrier frequency has failed. That's the quickest way to have a B&W picture on aging hardware.

...sooo... an oscillator/crystal and not a capacitor? Would it be something in the RF block or at the PPU's composite output?

These questions probably reveal how little I truly know about electronics! I still haven't had the chance to look at it.

Definitely not the only one! I'm actually the guy who asked Kevin and Jason to include a B&W mode when they were asking for selectable palette suggestions for the HD NES kit. It doesn't have the screen pattern that we see here but it does remind me of my youth when I was forced to play on a B&W TV. I got a real kick out of the last level of Kirby's Adventure (B&W Gameboy homage stage). No, this NES does not have any modifications.
  • Found someone else with this problem:

If that's not the same NES the OP encountered, this makes 3 with this issue.
  • I had the same issue a few years back. While playing Monster Party the color went out. I tried several games, all stuck in B/W with no change at all unlike the mario 3 video posted above that has some color wiggle.

The PPU (picture processing unit) might be failing. You would need a donor board to swap the chip from. You could also check the solder points and other parts near the PPU for a simple fix like a broken trace or bad passive component.

    Good luck

Thanks. I'm going to try swapping components with my other NES to see if that's the case here. First, though, I'm swapping the trimmer cap and replacing the other caps. If I still have the problem I'll swap PPUs to see what happens.

Doing this on mine made it lock up.
