NES Powerpak format issues - FAT32/FAT16

So, I just got a Powerpak from a friend.  I've followed the instructions to format the CF card.  I've done everything exactly as it says in the manual.

I still get a screen that says "bad format."  The default format is FAT32, and I even tried to format it as FAT.  Nothing works.

  • Did you try a different CF card? I'm a everdrive user I'm not completely familiar.

I know that the everdrives requires the OS file to be located on the root dir after formatting.
  • Which powerpak are you using SNES or NES?
  • I'm using the one that came from RetroUSB.
  • Do you have the POWERPACK folder, the newest version, on the card?
  • Yes sir, just downloaded it.
  • I'm trying to think what else...

I feel your pain, man, I've been fiddling with the SNES one all night and it wont work. but my NES one works fine.
  • I've noticed them being finicky in general.
  • Try a different Compact Flash card, or reformat the card and put all the files back.

Sounds like one of those two will fix it.
  • How large of a CF card are you using? I think it can only read up to a certain size.

That is correct, they can only be up to 2GB in size.

Please tell me where you got that piece of info?

I personally have used by a 4gb and a 16gb Dane Elec compact flash card in my Powerpak without issue.

  • I have a 4gb one, no brand or anything on it. The guy I bought it from said it came with the Powerpak.

I'm gonna go buy a different one tonight and see how it goes.
  • I have had good luck with the kingston cf card, i bought a second ppak recently that shipped with a transcend card and it didnt work no matter how i formatted. Put my kinston card in and worked like a charm

    Hope this helps guys
  • Clean system, clean cart, make sure there are no hidden partitions, don't use third party power supply, don't use a clone, try different card. Those are the answers to almost all the problems
  • Just cleaned the toploader, cleaned the cart, using original power supply, just bought my second card. Tried 4gb first time, got a 16gb SanDisk one today (it was all they had at Best Buy)

Got this one set up, and now it says "No card found" and "Card Busy" at the bottom. Tried the A-button & reset method, didn't work either.

Oh I must be wrong then, I set mine up over a year ago and I thought I remembered that the max was 2GB. That could have been for something else though, maybe for modding a wii.

  • Is your top loader modded? Do you have a toaster to try it on?

No it's all stock - I should be getting a toaster in tonight, I'll try that.
  • If you're using a top loader, it may need to be modded before using a powerpak with it. Mine works, but not all of them do without being modded.

  • That is for consoles with the arcade RGB PPU added, nothing to do with stock top loaders.

FAT16 has a 2GB size limit due to cluster size and cluster count.

FAT32 is needed for a larger drive to let you have access to more than a 2GB partition.

  • If you still can't get it, let me know and I can Ghost my card over to yours.

Are you using an official AC adapter?

What type of card is the new one (other then 16gb sandisk)? Got a part number or what all does it say on it? I know some cards that support faster read speeds will give issues. Best to stick to a 133x card.
  • I GOT IT! IT WORKS!

I don't know how, or why, but this time it worked. I love life right now!
