Is it worth reporting ebayers for side dealing on auctions you planned on bidding ?

Maybe I am being a little bitch but lately alot of the items I plan on bidding on are being ended pre-emptively.

I know even I will often message sellers asking if they will end early and sometimes they do so it seems hypocritical of me to care but when it happens to me I wish I had a fighting chance. I could live in a world without side-dealing and stick to just bidding but the sad reality is if I don't aak the seller to end and they are willing to, often times it will end anyways and prevent me from having a fighting chance. In a way I am forced to ask to side deal if I want to win items because if they say no then I proceed to betting my max at the auction or if they are willing to side deal im willin to negotiate that way.

But the main matter here is this is against ebays policy and it is broken many times a day I am sure. So should I report the seller for side dealing?

Should I just suck it up and keep asking sellers if they have a price in mind instead of assuming they will let the auction run its course?

I would love to hear a moderators opinion on this aswell.

  • Why not bid on the item the first chance you get so the BIN disappears and/or they're in a bind with you the bidder now. Though nothing will stop a side deal from happening if it does. Seller can easily say item was lost or whatever and there's nothing you can do about it.

But yea, it is hypocritical of you to get angry when it happens to you, yet do it to others and not give them a fighting chance.
  • There was no bin, the auction was up to $80 with less than a day left, then today the auction was ended at .99, the seller cancelled and all bids and cancelled the auction. Obviously they did so because someone made an offer via message... This happens often.

Also the only reason I do it is to prevent it from happening to me... Its a double edged sword, if i dont try and side deal first someone else comes alonf makes the deal and I lose all chance at it, is it still hypocritical? Can ebay make a policy to stop side dealing all together?
  • Not worth it. Don't make ebay even more of a hassle on as a seller. You gain nothing from this.
  • I dont gain in this instance but if my actions prevent it from happening forever than I do gain down the road.
  • Happens to me too, but I just let it go because there are shady sellers. EBay then adds more restrictions for sellers and it makes it a tougher place to do business all around. I'd let it go, especially if you do what you hate so it's a different type if fighting chance by beating another person to the punch in messaging the seller first. It's sad that this occurs and makes buying more cut-throat.
  • There's a possibility that the seller might have just sold the item on a different site or out of a real store.
  • Not worth the hassle. Can't say for sure it was a side deal. Maybe the seller thought it was worth well more then $80 and opted not to sell.
  • i saw this happen with a complete nes CIB little Sampson mint a few days ago i was watching. (not planning on bidding though) the bids was up to 680 then one day the item had ended at 100. the listing said it was an error but i have my doubts.

Was this for a zombies are my neighbors by chance?
  • Yes,

Regret not buying the last one at open auction, but there is always next one.
  • I just checked the auction to see where it was at. This morning it was at $80 and now it was closed. I feel your pain and join you in saying this seller needs to be reported...lol Was really looking to chase this bad boy down to the last second.

I would normally agree with this possibility, however I have my doubts if the item indeed started at a $0.99 auction.  Why sell it that way if you have it for sale elsewhere?

In this particular instance the seller was a scammer and it was covered in this thread:  http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=3&threadid=136377

  • Very rarely will items get side dealed on the last day like that. Side deals usually only happen when bidding is near the start and an offer is significantly above that.

I propose side deals in the first day or two of an auction, after that, I just bid as everyone else would.

If it is an item that you absolutely cannot live without, message the seller saying that you are willing to pay a significant price and that it should do very well at auction. Tell them not to side deal by even throwing a number out there, "this should go for at least $xxx".

I've done that a couple of times on really special items, and none of those got side dealed. I'm sure that was no coincidence.
  • Still find it ironic with very little info provided here I knew we both were watching the same auction. Hopefully it is relisted with a realistic buy it now.
  • Lol, so this is acceptable by the community but back dooring is not? My feelings are that when an item at open auction has 1 bid (or at least the reserve is met) that it should then ride out - else when side dealed, it prohibits the community from having fair opportunity - right?

Don't pitchfork me, just trying to understand .
  • I certainly think backdoor deals should not be happening for an active auction. Things will probably sell for what they are worth and there is a definite chance that the seller is just screwing himself out of last second high bidding snipers. If the auction ends, you missed it, and no one had bid then sure I see no real issue with dealing outside of eBay to buy it. But I must say even worse than auction enders are those idiots who don't price their stuff properly and back out of a deal after the auction has ended.

It's just my opinion, but I agree with your philosophy here.  My idea of "side-dealing" is to have the seller add a BIN option to an existing auction with no bids.  I don't feel it's right to try and work out a deal otherwise.

I'm not a mind reader. I have no idea why sellers close their auctions early. Just saying those could be a couple possibilities. For all I know the OP could be making this up. Maybe it's another eBay policy that should change.

Yeah that's true those are all possibilities.  I was just speculating for this particular case.

OP, I wouldn't worry too much about losing out on an auction like that.  Best just to let it be and wait for the next one.  Remember this if you ever get something really good on a side deal.

  • I don't know on this one. It's their right to cancel the auction and all ebay needs is a vague reason why. You aren't bound by the auction untill it closes. Many people list items on multiple sites and cancel the lowest one.

Then again the buyers are just as bad. If people would bid now and with what they consider their fair price the auctions would more than likely go through. I hate listing things for 7 days and only getting bids in the last 5 minutes. It's enough to make me want to leave ebay behind. Sniping doesn't work anyway as usually the sniper puts in too low of a bid and just gives me a few dollars more.
  • Closing early for a side deal doesn't make much sense to me anyway though. Sure you save 10% on fees but you aren't protected from fraud and the price is most often the same that it would go for with bids (or less hence the buyer wanting the side deal.) So if the item were at 80 the side deal would have to be at least 72 to break even but the auction would most likely have jumped closer to 100 on the last day.
  • Pretty lame/shitty that this happens. I've never once messaged an ebay seller for anything. If I lose the auction, I suck it up and move on. Just finally grabbed a Kid Klown for $55, takes patience on games as sellers think things are worth more than they sold for the previous hour, but for those rare items sometimes you just have to put your money where your index finger is.
  • If you don't bid at least bid once, you can't cry about an auction being side-dealed!

Sellers like to see a few bids or they start listening to offers..

Also, that Zombies ate my Neighbors guy has horrible feedback and will probably try to scam whoever bought it anyway
