Internet connection issues, HELP ASAP!

Where to start with this...it started mid day yesterday, some sites were taking forever to load (google) and others didn't load at all (youtube, wikipedia). And one or two would load but wouldn't work right (south park studios wouldn't load videos, reddit wouldn't let me comment, imagur wouldn't let me upload pictures).

I mainly use IE 9 (yeah I know it sucks), I also use Firefox. Both have the same issue loading up Youtube. Other sites work on Firefox though...for the most part. But not Youtube!

I cleared my cookies and catche and so on. Called Comcast (my internet is fine according to them). Cleared my DNS. Restarted my browsers. Restarted my PC. I'm stuck on what else I can do!

I'm using the same PC and the same browsers as always. I didn't install anything new, didn't get rid of anything new.

The only new thing I did was visit some new sites (I also ran a virus scan...nothing came up).

I need help ASAP!

Also as an off shoot, I'm not 100% sure my anti-virus picks up everything. I use the free version of Avast! simply because it has a gaming mode. I would be using Norton but it's a hog and doesn't go well with gaming. Are there better anti-virus programs that pick up stuff, do more and so on that are gamer friendly and don't hog up resources? Free or pay...as long as the price isn't like something stupid like $100+.

  • Did you reboot your modem and router? Are other computers in your house having the same issues?
  • Comcast customers download Constant Guard for home use. It includes Norton Security suite.

Maybe you should use that. You, or I should say your parents are paying for it every month.
  • Well...I figured it out after I posted it /facepalm

Avast is doing it for some reason! But now idk how to fix it so Avast works with Youtube?!

    Any ideas?
  • get rid of avast and install Microsoft security essentials instead. Its free and works just as well.  Ive read where its not as good as it used to be, but ive been using it for years and never had a problem with it.  it is also alot less bloated than avast and avg. You dont even notice it running.

You also possibly have some sort of virus on your computer that avast did not pick up which is causing your problem.

Really? Isn't that just...well the most basic anti-virus you can get? Does it actually block anything? And does it work well with games?

Right now I shut avast off since it's not working right...feel a little naked now.

I need something that blocks everything that the web will throw at it. I use Firefox to view..."adult" sites to keep pop-ups away but if I don't have an anti-virus i'm screwed right? I don't view them everyday mind you...just the normal web searching but i'd still like to have a strong anti-virus.

  • ive never had an issue with it. no virus software is perfect. you will get good and bad reviews for all of them.  you defently should have something installed.

also its not nearly as bloated as avast.  im sure its fine for games.  thats probably just some gimick they use to sell their software.

Last time i did any research into it, MSE has pretty poor detection rates.  It's decent if its the only option, but AVG or Avast, or Avira (which i think is currently the leader for the freebies) are going to be a lot better in the long run.

I will say OP, i've had issues with Avast! in the past causing some strange issues.  Which is why my free AV of choice is usally AVG.  Although since some shit happened and my debit card number got lifted in some way (probably online, and probably nothing i could've done anyways), i got a bit paranoid and bought ESET smart security.  It's absolutely brilliant IMO.  light on resources, and it's blocked a few random things, usually random popups or scripts form websites, which would otherwise be considered good.

I would say do some basic trouble shooting of your internet issue OP, uninstall the AV you have to see if that is a cause, run scans with various tools like malwarebytes, and also run speed tests on the net to see what kind of speeds you're getting.  Also if there are other computers on the network, and if you can watch the network logs, you might see if something has gotten out of hand on another computer.
  • Uh. Wow. My internet has had the same issue off and on for months now. I was blaming AT&T and/or my wireless router. But I am also running avast, so guess I'll try switching and see if that clears up the issue.

Looking at ESET...bit on the pricy side per year. I might look at Avira..

I disabled everything in Avast and Youtube ran fine. Turning them back on, Youtube doesn't load. I'd say it was Avast. Though even with Avast gone, Youtube and Google are taking their sweet time to load...but at least they load....after a time.

My speed test is above what my service is (according to Comcast), so no issues there.

My thought exactly. I have also been using it for years without issue.

  • Install AVG free edition, install Malwarebytes, uninstall Avast!, unplug your router for 10 seconds then power it back up, then reboot your PC and run Windows Update.

Edit: give Google Chrome a try too.. I find it to be much faster then Firefox and worlds better than IE. Some people can't stand the fact that its Google and they collect your search and browsing data but I couldn't care less.
