So... I need advice.

So, I'm planning on bidding on something on Ebay, and said thing (Not gonna say what it is, because I don't want even more people bidding on it ) actually went to quite a high level price wise. So, the next day I look back at it, and the top bid went down by $100 (This "thing" currently has a bid of over $1000) and recently the top bid seems to be shifting a few $s, from (For example) $145 to $151, $145 to $142 ETC, even though it still has the same amount of bids it had a couple days ago, and not to mention, I contacted the guy with said thing and he said that another buyer noticed that something in said thing was missing and he didn't notice, even though he said in the listing it has everything. I thought it's fine though because he specifically said that he wasn't trying to give anyone false info, he just didn't notice, and I'm sure he wouldn't have said anything about it if he was intentionally giving false info, but that was around 3 or 4 days ago, and he still hasn't changed the listing to say that something is missing, albeit a very small and non-important thing. So, what do you guys think I should do? I need some advice :\ (I will give in and link the item I'm talking about if need be)

  • Probably just someone retracting their bid. But don't bid on it if you are worried.

Oh, trust me, this is something that I need 100% proof is fake to keep me from bidding on it
  • You can tell for sure if it is shill bidding if after the auction is over the seller immediately offers you or the second highest bidder a second chance offer because the highest bidder "backed out".
  • Often shill bidders retract before the auction ends. Ebay is pretty easy to play with. Bidders can often type in crazy amounts and claim "typo" to cancel or they can ask the seller to cancel for them. most likely IF shill bidding is happening the OP will win but at his max bid.

OP, keep an eye out for an outbid email. Sometimes those come out before a bid can be retracted. If you get one then you know something funny is going on. If the bidding never gets to your max then it probably is just others being flaky. I know as a seller people often want to back out after hitting submit. Just be thankful the person didn't wait until the auction ended.
