Super Castlevania 4 is mediocre and higly overrated

That's right. I mean, what is there to this game? The levels are fucking EMPTY and you can breeze through with both hands tied behind the back, the occasional enemy that pops up a joke that neither poses any threat nor has much life to sustain it. The 8-directon whip makes it even worse and while not bad as a such the implementation is poor because the game doesn't balance it out like say Contra 3. The graphics aren't that exciting either, just different shades of brown and grey but this is a matter of taste.

Let's face it if this game didn't have a strong brand and the hype of being the 32-bit debut nobody would've given a shit.

  • Ouch. It's actually my favorite classic Castlevania.
  • The first few stages are good, then it gets boring for awhile.

But I feel that once you are inside Drac's castle the levels are more memorable and the challenge really picks up again, delivering a great overall package.
  • Do you like other Castlevania titles? I like the game a lot and I'm curious if it's just this entry, or the series on the whole.
  • Super CV is my favorite in the series. It was the second one I played as a kid (Simon's Quest was the first), but even without the childhood memories of it, it's a great game in my opinion.

I would say it's the exact opposite. I had so high expectations when getting to play this game for the first time (a couple of months back) and then it was like... "meh, might aswell go on for the sake of it". It does pick up at the castle (still too much challenge due platforming and traps rather than enemies) and i did get the urge to re-asses my judgement. Thinking about it again however i realize that that's really all there is to it: a good final rush on a race that's already long gone and completed. Too little too late...

Yeah. Of everything i've played (Bloodlines - halfway), 1, 2, 3 and circlle of the moon i'd only rate 2 lower. But that's like a punch below the waste considering that the fucking thing is basically broken with unbelievably dumb shit like "equip this and crouch in random corner for 30 seconds".

Yeah, I'm not really speaking from nostalgia on the matter either, because I played the game for the first time years and years after it was released. I think we have to remember this is a bit like Zelda 3... it was one of the earliest SNES titles and yet it's clearly better than a lot of the stuff that would be released later for the same system.

Gotcha, just curious. I share your feelings for 2.

I'm kind of in the middle on this game. I think it is overrated but I don't dislike it.  I dodn't remember the levels being quite that empty, but it has been awhile since I played it.

I think SotN, the GBA games, and the DS games (minus Ecclesia) are better than IV.
  • Your opinion is wrong!
  • Super Castlevania was a benchmark for the SNES and its capabilities. It really showed off what the SNES can do for sprite manipulation, Everything the SNES can do is in that game besides FX supported graphic enchantments like Polygons and Vector style graphics like Mega Man X2 and X3 supported.

Game was remarkable and really showed the jump from 8-bit to 16-bit. Sorry you don't like it, you are in the minority for sure but to each is their own.

I love the game, FAR better then DracX (SNES Version).
  • It wasn't until college that I ended up playing through Super Castlevania IV. After taking into account the OP's more objective look at it, the game does stand alone fairly well without even the Castlevania branding. The game's difficulty definitely amps up closer to the end [Slogra and Gaibon fight comes immediately to mind] but difficulty not withstanding, I think that what you have are two somewhat legitimate complaints.

    1) The omni-directional whipping offered both pro's and con's. It was helpful to use the whip as utility without having to resort to sub weapons. This must have, however, presented a unique design challenge that would inevitably make the game somewhat easier.

    2) The palette for the game is somewhat muted and drab compared to some other CV titles. Agreed. That said, I also feel that it helped create a different tone too. There were some earth tones used that accentuated some levels. I feel that while there wasn't the vivid palette as is found in other respective CV titles, it still creates the tone intended by Konami and seemingly works well for the overall mood for this early SNES release.

So what if it showed what the SNES could do? In the end it's a videogame and as such it should be fun to play.

  • I like SCV4 but I do think it's overrated. Even as a big CV fan I think most of the earlier games are overrated. Basically every CV game up to and including SotN, I would say. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all CV games including CV2:SQ, but I personally enjoy everything from Harmony of Dissonance and onward the most. Getting back on topic, TC has a few valid points, SCV4 is overrated and the levels are kind of empty. I also think CV3 is an objectively better game and I feel SCV4 was a step down after CV3. But still it has a great soundtrack, the graphics aren't half bad, and it does retain that classic CV feel (whether you like that or not is up to you). Overall I'd say it's a solid 7.5/10.

Because it is what it is, think is a blast, added a few new game mechanics we havent seen in a Castlevania game.  It was also the biggest Castlevania game to date.

Honestly you are the first one I have seen say the game wasnt fun. /shrug

  • blasphemy!

I think most of us are probably blinded at least somewhat by nostalgia, but I loved this game when I was a kid, so I don't know what I'd think if I first played it now.  Did you play it when you were younger, or only just now?

    a couple of months ago.

  • I am playing through it now again and it's just a standard castlevania game. With better graphics and some innovation on the level design. It offers nothing less than any other castlevania i have played. Castlevania 1 was just as easy with the exception of maybe dracula.

It's a lot of fun still, and the graphics for it's time were really well done. The rotating room and whipping 8 directions were great innovations in my eyes.

If you are playing these games for the first time you have to remember it's 2014 and a lot of games didn't age well, or at least are not as impressive as they once were.

But hey man, i am not a huge fan of some critically acclaimed games as well, some games just don't do it for YOU even though it does for many others. Nothing wrong with that.

I will say if you have not played symphony of the night to get it and play it asap. One of the greatest gaming experiences i have ever had, even to this day.
  • I've always thought it sucks hard. I got it for a few dollars about 15 years ago and just never enjoyed it and eventually gave it away. Castlevania has never really been my favorite series though but I do enjoy the 3rd game. And the PSX game is amazing. The SNES one though, I agree, never enjoyed it at all. Don't miss it.

Sure it was a groundbreaking early game, but so were F-Zero and Pilotwings, and we don't really gush over those games anymore either.
  • THANK YOU! I think it's a very weak entry in the classic castlevania type games. I love 1, 2(for different reasons) 3, bloodlines, and the GBA titles. 4 Always stuck out as a stinker though.

Wasn't impressed with contra 3 either.
  • I say Bloodlines is the best Castlevania I've played yet.

I also prefer Dracula X more over IV due to the beautiful graphics, fun level designs, and near CD quality music.

Just because James Rolf considers IV the 'Best in the series' doesn't make it a stand alone fact. I say this because there's many fanboys of his commenting anything he claims is fact.

E.T. worst video game ever? Give me a break.
  • Dracula X Chronicles is the best Castlevania game to be released. Can't go wrong with 3 of the best games in the series compiled into one.

I like Dracula X, but at the end of the day it was just a scaled down version of the amazing PC Engine CD game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. Check it out if you haven't.

  • SC4 is not overrated since many people don't like it. However, Symphony of the Night and Rondo of Blood which usually receives universal acclaim are much more deserving of the title of being overrated.
  • I've always felt that it was a disappointing step down from Castlevania III.

Believe it or not, not a ton of people know about Rondo of Blood. They know Dracula X on the Super Nintendo, but not the full game that was on the PC Engine.
  • Super Castlevania IV was the game that got me into console video gaming. I thought the Graphics, Level designs and music were Jaw dropping at the time. Had a nice sound sytem which made a big difference. The spinning tunnel stage was the most impressive (too me). Too bad it suffered from slowdown. If I can beat this game anyone can. By todays standars it is pretty short. Still my fave.

I thought SoTN was a bit overrated. Bought a PS1 just so I could play it. Wasn't expecting it to feel like Metroid. They've pretty much stuck with the formula since SoTN.
  • Sounds like you kind of bought the hype before getting to play it, I can see why it might underwhelm if you played it recently and not back when it was new. It's definitely my 3rd favorite among the series, behind 1 and 3. Love the music, the graphics, just the gameplay overall. Definitely not a good game if you want a challenge though.
