(New) Game Boy box rarity list (No Longer Being Updated) - Please Lock It

(I will no longer be updating this thread, anyone that has to time to take up the torch, please feel free to do so.) - Sorry Everyone

Please Lock This Thread, Mods.

The old list was nolonger being maintained, so I'm taking it upon myself to keep track of the list and any revisions that people believe the list needs. Feel free to chime in on any CIB game boy games that you believe should be added to the list or moved further down to the lesser rares list, or even taken off completely.

Nominations are needed in order for this list to stay accurate over time, so the collaborative efforts of all game boy game collectors will definitely be helpful.

The list itself has been wiped clean of all users that have or had the games on this list. If you would like to be added or re-added, be sure to make a post in this thread with what CIB game boy games from this list that you have!

It's subject to change, so don't be disappointed if a game you have gets removed due to it being too common.

  • I've got:

    Barbie Game Girl

    Bart & The Beanstalk

    Cool World

    Great greed

    Jetson's

    Knight Quest

    Spiritual Warfare

    Square Deal

    Zen

I'd also like to nominate Last Action Hero and Rampart to the list. I'm sure I'll think of a few more as the day goes on.
  • I don't think the list should be that long. If you are starting over, you may as well start from scratch.

I'll nominate the games that I consider to be the the rarest. Tried to go "in order", but many would be debatable.

    Top tier, R9s and R10s

    Spud's Adventure

    F1 Pole Position

    NIV Bible

R6s shouldn't be on the list. This would include stuff like Boxxle II, Fastest Lap, Dennis the Menace, etc. There's probably 40-50 titles you could consider R6s, and it isn't worth tracking at that detail.

Also, I'd lump most of your expensive populars (MM IV, MM V, TMNT III, etc.) into the R6 category.

And finally, there are some titles I'd consider "R6.5", meaning I could see arguments either way for them being a 6 or 7. Stuff like Jordan Vs. Bird, Joe & Mac, Buster Bros., etc. I think it just depends who you ask as to where they would put them.
  • Now that I have a CIB set I don't search anymore but Universal Soldier and Shaq Fu took me forever to get. R8 or R7 for these?
  • I'd consider Universal Solider an R7 but I'm not so sure on Shaq Fu. It's definitely not a GB holy grail that it once was, as most copies that turn up are sealed. Maybe R7, at least an R6.
  • Oh and after thinking a little more, this is another good one:

    Race Days

Easy R7, probably R8. This game simply never appears in the USA version, only as Euro. Can't even remember the last time I saw a USA version up for sale.
  • Alright, the list has been revised and split into tiers. Here's what has been removed, and of course, feel free to voice your opinion on the removal of these games from the list.

  • Hmm... after reviewing what was removed, I'd have to throw these in there too:

    R7s

    Hit the Ice

    Robocop Vs. Terminator

I'd probably include Super Chase HQ (Taito) in the R6.5 category as well.
  • I've been aggressively casting a pretty wide net since jan/feb this year and a few games I have yet to see pop up on eBay that aren't on the list or have been removed:

    All-Star Baseball '99

    Darkman

    Megalit

    Rampart

    Star Saver

    Tasmania Story
  • Ive jetson and snow bros

Yeah, a year for GB is nothing though.  I've been actively tracking almost 4 years straight now?  There will be many titles you never see in the span of a year, plenty other sports that you probably haven't seen or noticed.  Stuff like ISS 98, Elite Soccer,  Muhammad Ali Boxing, etc.  Stuff you would never notice till you start trying to fill in "commons".

You also have to search worldwide, half and Amazon.  There's a Mint Tasmania Story that's been on Amazon a couple of months now.  I cleaned out some of his nicest stuff when he started listing, he had around 150 CIBs.  I think Deathmore may have gotten some stuff off him too?

I'd say all of those, other than All Star 99 are at least R6s though.  I could see some arguing them as R7s.
  • Yeah, I don't quite see those being up to par with the rest of the list. While it may be true that some of the games on the list have had a few CIBs in just this year alone, I feel that it has more to do with the price that they go for more than anything. Money is a pretty good incentive to sell.

The closest CIB game out of those 6 to being an R7, would probably be Darkman. That was a pain in the butt to find CIB even as far back as 2009. I'll add it to the 6.5 tier for now though.

In case these get mentioned as well, these are some other CIB game boy games that probably won't be added to the list, as I'm not sure if I'm convinced that these would make the cut.

The number next to each game are the boxes I've seen in just this year alone, one has been bone dry, but it's debatable whether it would make the cut or not. It may only take one really good CIB sale in order for more to pop up.

    Castlelian - 1

    Pac In Time - 3

    Pinball Fantasies - 3

    Metal Masters - 0

Gradius The Interstellar Assault - 1
  • Metal Masters is already on the list   GameQuestDirect had a lot of sealed copies back in the day, but that well has been dry for at least 3 years.

And Gradius is at least an R6 too.

Oh yeah, dur. Lol I'm blind, don't mind me.

That seems to be a common-ish story for some gameboy games. It was that way for The Getaway as well, plenty of sealed copies for a while there, then they just disappeared and there was a drought. There still is, sort of.
  • I have CIB

    - Ninja Boy 2

    - Bart Beanstalk

    - Itchy & Scratchy

ISS 98 should be there on the list IMO. I tracked the Simpsons games and they were way easier to get than ISS 98. That being said, I don't know how ISS 98 compares to most of the other rare GB titles.
  • I have ISS 98 as well.
  • Shouldnt kid dracula be higher?
  • Hey... if a hudson soft Felix the Cat box is an R8, how rare/valuable are the manuals?

  • Originally posted by: Fantomex

Perhaps if enough CIB GB collectors agree on having it moved up to an R8.

  • A lot of rarities are a matter of opinion, but I could see an argument for Kid Dracula being an R8. Though you'd have to have MMIV and MMV as R7s at least if you measure Dracula as an R8.
  • DAng, I had NIV bible CIB, but a guy from church stole it from me. lol

Are you just referring Mortal Kombat I & II as two separate titles? There is one of each on eBay right now CIB for like $25.

Nope, it's a combo cart.  Image courtesy our NA database!  1 and 2 on their own are probably R3/R4 at best.

That explains it! I don't beleive I've ever noticed that cart let alone the box. Game Boy collecting is so intriguing.

  • I have a factory sealed Sumo Fighter. I've always been curious about it. I paid around $10 a few years ago when I visited California. I have been contacted about selling but I enjoy having it since I found it in the wild. Have any popped up forsale. I'm not sure about prices on this.

A complete copy popped up in December for just under $400, beyond that I have no idea what a sealed copy would go for. Jonebone or RpgCollector might be able to give you an accurate price gauge though.

  • Well a CIB copy of Sumo Fighter sold for $1400 in Sept / Oct so who knows. Even a CIB Avenging Spirit broke $1k recently. Sumo is certainly an easy 4 digits these days.

Everytime I look at that 1k sale on Avenging Spirit, I look back to 2012 when I could've grabbed a factory sealed copy of that game for $70. I regret passing that that up so much, if for no other reason than the fact that it would have made great trade bait for a couple GB titles in particular. Oh well, you live and you learn.

  • Was that factory sealed avenging spirits on Amazon? I saw one on there around that time. I have bad luck with buying sealed games on there though so I passed. A couple 've bought have been shipped in envelopes and crushed. Sonic blastman II snes which was super cheap and a turbo grafx game. Amazon refunded for the TG game though and told me to keep it since the warehouse didn't package properly. I was surprised they did that.

Oh woah, nope! The copy I found was on a different website, I even recall asking Dain what he thought of the price. That's crazy if there were actually two sealed copies up for sale around the same time, or perhaps it could've been the same seller on both websites. I hear you though, I get pretty antsy when I buy any sort of sealed game through Amazon.

  • Yeah there was a VGA 90 Avenging Spirit up on Amazon forever that I passed over too. Oh well, I'm just glad I own a CIB, and I sold a CIB last year at a pretty nice price too.
